Sony introducing PS3 New Owner's Kit
Introductory accessory bundle packs in a DualShock 3 controller, HDMI and USB cables for $69.
Sony took a step toward making HD gaming more affordable by dropping the PlayStation 3's cheapest entry point to $249 in August. It is now extending this initiative to essential accessories with a package to help new owners access the box's full potential.
Priced at $69, the New Owner's Kit will include a DualShock 3 wireless controller, in addition to HDMI and USB cables. The inclusion of an HDMI cable in this bundle fills a gap left by the SD cable included with PS3 system purchases, while the USB cable will let players charge the controller during play.
A DualShock 3 controller by itself retails for $54, so the $69 New Owner's Kit provides two types of cables at a $15 premium. The packaging touts the kit as featuring "over $24 in savings."
The New Owner's Kit is available for preorder now, with GameStop and Wal-Mart planning for a release on October 25.
HDMI cables are like 5 bucks though. Therefore ripoff.
If I didn't just buy another PS3 controller, I'd think about it.
This is not that bad of a rip off.
@AJHEYHEY UC3? Ermm - maybe a 3rd person adventure? or another two-yearly update?... or yet another action game in the vein of Indiana Jones/Mummy series?... or lazy idea cash-in much like the other two already released maybe?... UC3 - hardly original eh? .... Where is Last Guardian!! Argghh!!
I wish the owner kit was Uncharted 3 themed :P...then maybe but I and the millions already own this stuff...why bother :P
This isn't a good deal, it's a rip off.
@DIGIDEMON what would u call uncharted 3
P.S. The DS3 should cost no more than $29.95
Not bad but almost too little too late.
yayyyyyy! :)
Needs renaming to the 'Scr*w a new owner Kit'. Hey Sony - from an existing owner here's a question - why not just release an exclusive PS3 game worth playing?
Get all of that from eBay and you're looking at about $40!
DualShock 3 (any color): $55 6ft gold-plated HDMI cable from Monoprice: $3.50 10ft gold-plated USB cable from Monoprice: $1.60 Shipping cost from Monoprice: $4.86 Total: $64.96 (with better and longer HDMI and USB cables, and with the freedom to choose whatever color you want for the controller...)
@awheaten @ArabrockermanX Because like most "news" outlets, xx% of the news is actual news that the given site has sourced, the other xx% is paid for "promotional" news, this news is the paid for type ;)
@ArabrockermanX I wonder the same thing?!
How is this news?
They give you a USB cord to charge the controller while playing. The only problem is that the dang cord is only 3ft long!!! That's what made me buy the official Sony charge station. So the USB cord is worthless. It also won't charge the controller when the system is off.
I remember I got the Ratchet & Clank controller bundle for $40 on amazon once, same may apply here. Don't watch the MSRP if you buy from amazon.com,
Not too shabby, even though I can get a controller for $40 and a HDMI for $8 @ amazon.com. But I won't say it's expensive, cause Microsoft and Nintendo do the same or worse, Sony has actually been giving us the best values this gen. And besides, even though we can buy these separately online for much cheaper online at places like amazon, chances are amazon will also slash $20 off this as well anyways, so it's a decent package.
Sounds like a good idea in theory, but considering I can get everything included here for less on Amazon, I'd have to pass.
There should be a monkey who lives beside displays of this and laughs at anyone buying them.
HDMI cables are probably the biggest rip off to buy in store. I've seen HDMI's going for $70! Anyone who knows can tell you, if you pay more than $10 for 6' cables, you are getting ripped off. Got mine from Walmart.com for $4 and free shipping. They work perfectly on my PS3.
"Savings" is not the first word that comes to mind. Just got an HDMI cable from Amazon for $1.72, shipping included.
impulse buy or upsale for moms/wives/gf's buying this for family or significant others. just in time for the holidays! sony really does have a genius marketing team. realize not everyone is going to hunt down all the deals on the innerwwebz, and that these will be sitting right next to the consoles, making it a no-brainer purchase.
It actually is HDMI 1.4....so, not a bad deal for someone who needs this stuff.
It's a little overpriced. If you see the 3 items in amazon was at 55.00 in total. You will pay for a good-loking box. !!!

some moms will buy this for their kids/husbands.
For all those who think gold plated oxygen free soldering £300 leads is the way to go you may want to check reviews, the cheap ones provide as high a quality in the main, and if you have just bought into PS3 then this seems a good buy. My collection has steadily built however since 2007 and if anyone wants a sixaxis sans shock, I've got a few going spare.................
I have no idea what you guys do to those cheap cables that they last so little. I have 3 5$ cables in 3 different devices and they all work perfectly, the oldest one is 4 years old and i've never had a single problem.
Both cables together cost under 5$ online ... for the same quality and you get a longer length. What a rip.
Good idea, but I could really do with a 2-3 metre long usb cable.
Doesn't make sense to buy another USB cable when there's one in the box already.
To be fair I could have done with this when the console came out. In the UK a controller costs as much as a new game in stores, and the decent HDMI cables ain't that cheap either. Personally I think this is a decent idea, just a tad late..
I already have HDMI cable (came with the console in a special sale). The USB one is a treat.
Consider these prices are Australian AUD DS3 pad-$50 import from UK HDMI-$8 for 2 metre long USB play and charge cable-Have many lying around and Got one with my second hand ps3 anyway $58 altogether, and judging by the fact these mentioned prices are of american nature (We dont have wal-mart or gamestop here) I'd still say this isnt that cheap unless you are one of those idiots who buys a "bargain" hdmi at $30+ As they say, its just a cable, if it works it works, if it doesn't then you need to check seller credibility before hand.
Sony is disgusting...
You can regularly find HDMI cables for a buck on those daily deal sites.
oh yeah totally a life saver...
Does seem like another pointless opportunity to milk that cash-cow.
I go to www.monoprice.com for my HDMI cables, get them dirt cheap, and they are just as good as the expensive ones. Every one who says the more expensive ones are better are lying to them selves. I have bought 3 HDMI cables over the years, 2 from mono price and 1 from Sony....the Sony one didn't even make it a year. The first cable I bought 6 yrs ago from monoprice.com is still going strong with a perfect signal. I can believe that maybe the more expensive ones use more durable parts....but really what would some one have to do to one of these cables to actually where out the coating, or the metal components on the ends of them? Constantly plug them in and out? Have some one walk on them constantly lol. Who would do those things? Sorry guys your $99.00 monster cables are the same thing I bought for $3.99 deal with it.
Gotta love Sony
Love the people on here trying to justify there expensive HDMI cables. Sorry guys, you got scammed.
im going to launch myself into space if one more person try's to put their hands in my pocket... here's looking at you game industry.
@Phantasmica amazon is awesome for getting things cheap
a savings huh? I paid only 40 bucks for a new PS3 controller from Best Buy about a week ago. and I looked up HDMI cables a few days ago and found some good ones for like 10-15 dollars on Amazon. Oh well, people will still but it probably.
hehe i bought a controller for 25 bucks on CL :)
I think all HD consoles should ship with a free HDMI cable, I mean who doesn't own an HDTV nowadays?
@Soothsayer42 HDMI cables can't really get "better" than one another. The only measure there could be is either signal attenuation or bouncing, and if either of those occurred, the cable simply wouldn't work, the picture and sound would be an absolute mess. Where HDMI cables are concerned, it either works perfectly, or not at all. And since you really shouldn't be doing anything to the cable that might have it wear out quickly, the cheapest HDMI cables will generally be the best choice. The kit a bad deal. You could get these items (of similar or better quality) on amazon for roughly $50. That's $19 less than this kit.
wow you can get all this stuff way cheaper on amazon. and i already have a crap load of usb cables from everything else that comes with one. i guess i can go on amazon and get this bundle even cheaper if i wanted to lol
