Sony to release PS4 after Microsoft's next-gen console

Yay Laura wrote an article! I haven't seen her write one in MONTHS since the Laura Croft one.

Wouldn't care if the PS4 release 6 month's after the 720 I would still wait for the PS4, wouldn't touch another Xbox.

If only these 2 company's would merge the industry would be more prosperous. I'm sure the company will reach its true potential and make real breath taking games if that would ever happen.

This console war is not only annoying it's a hindrance because Dev's are not putting all their focus on one console and that can lead to wasted resources and features because of competition, deadlines, and marketing gimmicks that promote the sales of one console or the other. 

In my world the two brands will merge and sell various styles of gaming controllers to suit all kinds of players.     

Seems odd that PS4 will arrive last when we know more about it than the 720

The DirectX 11 and openGL 4.2 middle ware engines are going to do all the work at the same price as PS3 game development. I believe Xbox 720 and PS4 and going to look the exact same.

Xbox 720 will have the red rings of death so I'll be the smart one and pick PS4 :-)

I am hopeful that since they both are using AMD and can change at the last minute that they both will not show their hands till NEITHER can change their designs, or add extra ram, change   the kind of ram... or other change. 

Well they've already given a release window of "Holiday 2013". M$ are now free to do as they wish, including taking this guys advice and releasing later.

GOD! i wish sony and microsoft had an agreement to release their consoles on the same date because these business practices are really irritating, *sigh* if only

Whether they come out late this year or first quarter next year i'm gonna wait. First wave games for systems always suck. Though GTA5 will be out on them guaranteed. Every vid for that game looks next gen so far.

I don't see la-z-boy trying to stop Craig's List from selling second hand furniture, or auto makers shutting their cars off the second they get to Carmax...why are video game companies the only companies that exude greed and clearly wanna bone the gamers. Don't they realize that a lot of those new game purchases were because someone sold old games to buy the new one? It sickens me that they really think they are going to make more money this way and it can't be farther from the truth. Let's take the car analogy...I own a Lexus IS300, when that car first hit market it was 35,000 plus dollars. Do you think I had that money? No! I had 22,000 dollars and that's how much I paid when I bought it USED. Maybe Lexus didn't make money off that specific purchase, but they already made money off that car! What the owner does with the car is no longer Toyotas business! Same thing goes here...we buy used games because they are cheap, or the game got crummy reviews and so we don't feel like paying a full 60 for the game. Cant they see that nobody has the money to buy brand new alllll the time? They should focus on bad ass DLC so if someone does buy the game used, they will purchase DLC and that's free and easy money.

IMHO, I think Sony should have learned from their two biggest mistakes from last gen: first, it was too expensive (1 PS3= Xbox+Wii); second, it came to the market way too late. I believe those two factors allow MS to gain a lot of ground in the market!

I'm not surprised at all about this news. The main reason Sony doesn't want to launch first is for 2 reasons. 1) They really don't have the funds to launch another expensive piece of hardware after just releasing the PSVita. 2) They don't have enough launch titles completed yet. Knowing Sony and their past hardware, chances are good that the PS4 is just as hard to program for as the PS3. If that's the case games could take 18-24 months to complete. 

Sure they could improve their hardware, but at what costs. Does Sony want to release another $500-$700 system? I don't think so.

xbox needs to keep working and not let people push them to fail or beaten. GOT TIPS ? ok what ever they have will release when it does because its going to be UPDATED any ways  and what if sega some how comings out with a system then sega vs ps4/5 ok cool im in SEGA. and xbox 2/3/8

Also you have to remember about how powerful the playstation 3 was supposed to be compaired to the xbox, and with both consoles there is hardly any difference if any that are noticable and xbox now has maxed out its capabilities in terms of graphics processing power so they are realeasing the next gen where as sony never made its potential. So in that respect having that bit more processing power is null and void unless you tap into it over its life. If sony try and up microsoft in this manner on next gen again they need to prove its more powerfull by getting developers to up the ante and tap into that power, which imo they failed to do. Either way the only reason im going to buy one or the other is 1. whats the online service like 2. Is the controller comfortable to use 3. Is it worth paying more for one over the other when esentialy they will both do the same thing and thats play games.

It makes hardly any difference who goes first, as both xbox and playstation already have decided what hardware there using more than a year in advance so they can order the parts they need on mass. The only difference it will make is weather the competitor who goes first beats them on price because the one who goes second can plan there strategy for advertising to one up the competition and make it sound better or make it seem like they have a better deal. There all winners at the end of the day because of the profit they both make and to be honest both companies even though they would like to out sell the other dont care that much as long as they do make a profit. Your gonna buy either one or the other and its all done with advertising and quality of games on offer coupled with value for money. If this generation is anything to go by then the comparison between the two consoles was minimal in terms of performance. One had better online capabilites the other had blueray. Gimmiks like the kinect and playstation move both were flops and didnt drive sells for either other than that towards the casual market away from nintendo.

An effective console reveal is going to include hardware specifications in an attempt to attract the technical crowds for pre-ordering purposes. While minor tweaks and changes will be made over the course of a console's development process to capitalize on changing tech, one of the first things a company stakes out for a new console is an intended price point. R&D is given a strict budget and follows a formula to determine the final launch.

In order to determine a final price point, In-house costs (D) added to the dividend of hardware mass production(H) versus the final price point (X) gives the loss. Loss (L) is a non-static number as it can be set an any point a developer deems. Loss is than offset by an estimated number of Software (S) and minor hardware sales including games, controllers, headsets, etc... 

D + (H / X) = L - S          <----- Solve for X (this is a rudimentary example of the far more complex formula actually used. Theirs has a lot more numbers and variances)

All the while the R&D department is forced to keep low enough to minimize profit loss per console sold based on the willingness of the public to pay. Nintendo, for instance, has stated that the Wii U + 1 game is profitable, so at a $300 pricepoint + $60 for 1 Nintendo-published game at 50% publishers fee would put the console at roughly $320 per console manufacted, allowing for a $10 profit. Now this isn't completely accurate, but this is how the industry works as a rough example.

Now, the purpose of this little homework assignment was to point out the fact that, no matter when the Xbox or Playstation comes out, they won't be set far enough apart to allow one company to alter their hardware in any significant way as to one-up the other. The In-house development budget has been established and a price point and loss expectation have been set for some time as well. Hardware changes would require additional expenses in R&D as well as mass-production price hikes for producing higher expense equipment, which would in turn force console prices to go up or losses to go up. Either way, this path is ultimately not in the best interest of a company out to make money.

The order of release has proven it's not entirely detrimental to the success of a console either, as the ps3 has recently surpassed the Xbox 360 in total worldwide sales and the Wii far surpassed both within a year of it's launch, even after the 1-year lead the 360 had in the market. In the long run, the only thing that matters is the above formula and the ability to move product to the consumers, which is typically managed by providing Videogame software that most appeals to the masses, hence the necessity to release exclusives and 1st-party titles.

Why would anyone want a next gen Microsoft console when they could be far superior and have a next gen Sony console? Really it doesn't matter which comes first the Sony console will always be greater console

1. It's a misinformation tactic. Sony has more to gain by releasing first. The ps3 didn't sell as well as its predecessors. Sony cannot afford to take such a big risk. Hirai is trying to lure Microsoft into a false sense of security.

2. Hirai's statement about 'wait and see' is silly. Console development isn't something that takes weeks or months. Hardware specifications, and subsequently, dev kits have to be finalized way in advance to allow for a launch game lineup. OEMs need months upon months of preparation for fabrication due to low silicon yields. Factories also need months for assembling the console itself. And not to mention testing, processor customization, warehouse stockpiling, logistics etc etc. If anyone here thinks that you can just watch what your competitor does first, and simply swap out your hardware with something better, you're really out of your mind. The ps4 and 720 hardware would be locked in by now. Any major change in hardware will cost millions upon millions. It's now a race to the final console build, and subsequently....a sooner release date.
