A shootout scene in popular PlayStation 3 title Resistance: Fall of Man that takes place inside Manchester Cathedral has been branded 'desecration' by church officials.
The Church of England may sue electronics giant Sony in the latest video game-related row, reports the BBC. The Church claims that the PlayStation maker did not obtain proper permission to use the interior of Manchester Cathedral in its first-person PS3 shooter Resistance: Fall of Man.
The game is set in an alternative 1950s where World War II never happened, and follows army ranger Nathan Hale as he fights against an invasion by alien creatures called Chimeras. The game is set in the UK, the last European stronghold against the Chimeran invasion. One of the scenes involves Hale battling against the aliens inside Manchester Cathedral.
The Church is demanding that Sony apologises and removes the game in its current form from store shelves, or face legal action.
Bishop of Manchester Nigel McCulloch said, "For a global manufacturer to re-create one of our great cathedrals with photo-realistic quality and then encourage people to have gun battles in the building is beyond belief and highly irresponsible." The Bishop added that in light of Manchester's gun crime problems, the scene was especially inappropriate. The church even went as far as to call Sony's actions "desecration" according to a report in The Sunday Times.
Sony said in a statement that it was taking the Church's concerns very seriously, and would be contacting cathedral authorities today to discuss their concerns. The statement read, "Resistance: Fall of Man is a fantasy science fiction game and is not based on reality. We believe we have sought and received all permissions necessary for the creation of the game."
Sony's UK head of PR, David Wilson, added in an interview with The Sunday Times, "It is game-created footage, it is not video or photography. It is entertainment, like Doctor Who or any other science fiction." A recent episode of Doctor Who, "The Lazarus Experiment," featured a climactic battle in Somerset's Wells Cathedral.
It pretty much comes down to who owns the Church (England itself, the Church Organization?), did Insomniac Games get proper authority to use the Church/likeness in a product. If they did, they have nothing to worry about. If they didn't well, that is what Sony Copyright lawyers is for...
omg omg in BF there is a mosque and you fight in the area around...omg omg you can throw 'nades at the mosque..sue dice and EA sue them!!! that's how stupid the church of england is sounding right about now.
hahaha. this is hilarious. most people can't turn their heads without getting offended at something these days. find your sense of humor, Bishop McCulloch.
OMG LOL PIMPOFDOOM... frankly the church of england isnt worried about god lol... but yes i agree... if aliens came and wanted to take over a building we made in honor of our god, i think we would fight for it people are **** stupid these days...
I think that god would want us to defend his holy building if a bunch of unholy things where attacking.
I can't help but laugh at this. It's a game, some people take things too seriously. I'm a catholic and I like video games to be honest I don't see the problem here. Not like it's a game where you're nailing jesus to a spike instead of a cross x.x people need to get over themselves.
I dunno really...I m a Catholic and an avid gamer at that but I still wouldn't imagine a videogame scene in the Vatican, so in a way the Church of England has a point. It might not be 'sueable'' but it is in bad taste.
I will sell my game and ask for forgiveness.... or... i could remind people its just a fantasy game? cant wait 4 the sequel...
What game are you refering to? Ohhh, I get malmeid2, your a microsoft whore. Unlike you my opion on the console war is NOT biased aganist Sony or Microsoft or Nintendo. Anyway, I'd like to point this out to the English, IT IS A FREAKIN' GAME THAT IS NOT BASED ON WHAT REALLY HAPPENED!!! I mean honestly, what freakin' idiot would mistake a real church for a video game church where humans and aliens are killing eachother? What about Company of Heroes? You can blow up churches in that game. Hell, you can light churches on fire. Oh, wait a second, those are French churches, who gives a s***?
I would think the church would be more concerned with a game that people actually play (you know; those things we call "good games"). ;)
And like GameSpot said in the HotSpot, Nigel McCulloch must be a pretty lame gamer if he ONLY NOW got to the Manchester Cathedral part. Haha... Sony should use the bishop's comments in an ad for Resistance. "Photo-realistic quality! Gun battles [are]....beyond belief!" That'd be really funny. I like the HotSpot.
Anglican Church eh?? Why bother? It's just a game.......demons banished in churches, all you need to know is that , Churchy. And......blood were spilled on a price in the game. To defend the mankind.
Wow! And they wonder why they suck. Church of England? More like Church of Stupid.
The church would probably seem a lot more credible if they had done this before the game came out/as soon as it came out. Also, Sony got permission, they're not promoting shootouts in a church, it involves aliens, which we know totally happened, the graphics are not photo realistic (though they are good graphics), and I think David Wilson summed up my last idea perfectly.
Church is a desecration of God. and LOL at... "People have wars over pleasing their gods. They KILL each other because of their beliefs in their gods. " Thats a terrible supportive arguement for trying to say that religious people are not weak minded lol. As to whether they are or not, F that topic, Its a worthless arguement that will never end.
looks like the church of England needs to get some of that cash money. Man, even the church is going as far as to sue the video game industry to try and bank on some of their success. It is a sad world.
the church has allways hated video game this is just a lame excusse to try and stop one also sony only pubished it not devlpoed it so they are not responceable
You can't take away my copy too!! Already bough one... But who cares about this anyway?? Maybe 2 out of 200 persons care about this... And I have seen so many games with fights in lots of catedrals and churches, why only acuse this one??
Okay I'll give the archbishop that much credibility for photo-realistic and non-alteration of location to give an INDICATION that it's this place...but it isn't, but it's not encouraging anybody to shoot people in the cathedral. That's like taking crazy pills. But! You never know I suppose. Now all I need to do is find some Chimeras to blast... As long as Sony is taking it seriously, they can handle it from there. But I've already got my copy of Resistance, sorry about that archbishop.
Vorknykx-"religion is for weak minds" who died and made you the philosophy guru? how could anyone say something so ridiculous as "religion is for weak minds"... one of the strongest sources of conviction in all of history is the belief in something higher, intangible and mysterious. People have wars over pleasing their gods. They KILL each other because of their beliefs in their gods. That's because they have weak minds??? For someone such as yourself to ignore that inherent and dangerous truth, THAT is typical of a "weak mind", whatever you mean by that.
As for the possible lawsuit, I don't see anyone benefitting from this. Sometimes bad press is good press... but not this kind of press. Sony looks bad for possibly breaking the law, and the church looks bad for making a big deal out of what is easily percieved as something harmless. No one is making any money here.
So if the church does end up taking legal action. It looks like another way for them to try to make money. That's why orginized religion is such BS! Sony has done nothing wrong.
RalekTir Dude...the Church is blowing this way out of proportion...its a video game, its not like someone actually went into the Manchester Cathedral and shot it to pieces. IMO they jsut need to drop the subject this is a pointless argument they that they are going to lose.
Quick grab a copy for it is now a controversal collectors item like San andreas .............(the rest is censored due to the overtly touchy underlying subject at hand).
this is so dum, letting sony to develop a level like that is outragous and not only sued for but deserve to be shut down for good. now i will never ever buy a ps3 in my life or at least that game
Its obvious that the majority of these posts care nothing for the true nature of the story, you people only want an outlet to bash Christianity and religious faith. Such hatred, its unhealthy you know. Take a few aspirin and lie down for a nap. Believe me, you'll be vastly more tolerable.
Gee, that's hard. I wouldn't think that the Church of England would be so mad just for having itself being put into a videogame. I would have expected this kind of behavior if it turned out the Church was a hiding spot for the Chimera's or working along side them... Oh wel, I guess it generates good publicity.
taking an established game off the shelves seems crazy, asking for an apology is fair enough but removing the game is over the top. it will never happen. i think they are making mountains out of mole-hills, who cares if the church was used in the game. It's a fictional battle and unless there is anything in the game openly moking it then there really is no reason to make such a big deal.
on the flip side you can bet that there isnt any flying planes in gta 4 because they dont want anyone crashing them into buildings ala 9-11. i could just see that fox news report
@m0thr4: Blasphemy, seriously??!! But yeah, I think people are looking at this from the wrong angle; its not about religion or money; like kavadias1981 said its about SONY recreating the church without permission. So my question is this: isnt the church public property, do they need permission to use its likeness??
gee freaking wiz, theres even a passage in the Bible that explicitly reccomends that u SHOULD NOT TAKE LEGAL ACTION AGAINST SOMEBODY. I guess most of us christians deserve the hypocritical label we get.
Why are so many ppl saying the church want money? They only want an apology and for sony to remove the part of the game that invole the building in it. Sony can just take the game off the shelves, redo that part of the game to make it not look like the church, and re release it. There nothing about the church wanting to get money off of sony..........
Guys guys. A lot of you are still posting a lot of anger and stupid comments so I will post again. The Resistance team did NOT get permission from the C of E to use it's building. This is the issue. They used it by name and by structural detail. You cannot do this without permission. Be it in a game or a film. Take GTA4. The city is similar to New York but there are minor structural alterations and different names for loactions and buildings. That is ok. They used a city BASED on a real city but it is not a copy of the city itself. The Resistance team used the actual Manchester Cathedral and referred to it by name. That is going to get you into legal hot water.
lol, this is probably a publicity stunt by sony to try to sell-out every copy of this game. by creating a possibility that it might be pulled off the shelves, people might be inclined to rush in to buy one before it's gone... no? sounds like it would work. to some extent anyways. oh well, there's no such thing as "bad publicity"...
The game is fiction and takes place in a fictional universe. In reading this article, the C.O.E. therefore must be fictional too. Why else could there be any controversy.
