Maxis-developed action role-playing game set in Spore universe will be revealed in two weeks in San Diego at the geek gathering.
In less than two weeks, game developers and publishers will flock to Southern California to show off their newest entries at the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con. LucasArts will give gamers more information on Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2, Bungie will be on hand showing more of Halo: Reach's campaign, but Maxis is using the stage to offer the very first details on its newest game.
According to a programming schedule on Comic-Con's Web site, a Maxis-developed Spore title will be announced on Saturday, July 24 in the hour between 6 and 7 p.m. PDT. According to the game's brief description, it is a "brand new, sci-fi action RPG based on the DNA of Spore." Additionally, lead developers on the project, Thomas Vu, Paul Sottosanti, and Lauren McHugh, will be on hand to announce the new game.
While the title does not yet have an official name, according to the official Spore forums, the game will be called DarkSpore. Individuals on the forums say a Web site, www.DarkSpore.com, was open for a brief period recently, and that the game will pit players against the nefarious DarkSpore alien race. What's more, the assertion comes with substantial merit, as Electronic Arts recently trademarked the name "DarkSpore."
Spore is the brainchild of gaming legend Will Wright and released in 2008 on the PC and Mac. The game, a multigenre experience, has since extended to other platforms and has seen multiple expansions. For more on the franchise, check out GameSpot's review of the original Spore.
personally i think that ever since will wright left all creative drive has left maxis they havent made a expansion or a spin off title in a year spore creature keeper was obviousy been cancelled as all i saw was 5 seconds of it in a trailer last year heard nothing else about it
i wish they would just make spore 2 instead of just making a bunch of different crap with the word spore in it and make it more realistic or something like the first spore developer walkthrough they made and dont make it so shallow
Spore had such awesome potential, but it was so horrendously dumbed down that it failed to deliver a great game. Really sad, actually.
Hmmm, I don't read whether or not Will Wright would still be involved. Even though I personally thought the game was a little shallow, my kiddoes absolutely loved it and still play it. I presume by RPG, that this will involve playing out a story?
Well in the original spore there was some RPG stuff to it in the creature stage. You were able to customize your monsters attacks and level them up. Maybe this will expand that.
Thought Spore was an really interesting concept that broke down over the length of the game. My initial reaction a Spore RPG is a big huh? But I'll wait and see what they come up with. Guess it could have been worse they could have made a FPS Spore game...DarkSpore gone wild! Gun them down!
Dont know what to make of this? Spore world doesn't strike me as been in an RPG game Hopefully it will still be a good game
lol, Spore RPG ? We'll have to see how that turns out. We can only hope it's not too childish, but knowing Maxis it will probably be
@scyldschefing I really enjoyed Spore. I still enjoy it. I'm sorry you feel like I was duped into buying this game. I thought it was wonderful myself.
I'm just disappointed that EA is going to be able to continue to milk the cash cow that is Spore. What an awful, half-baked game that was, and how absurd it is that EA is continuing to get rewarded for releasing that poorly executed piece of slop. As I have said before, the only truly innovative part of the game was the land creature creator with its "procedural animation." It is, after all, what created such a buzz with Spore's Creature Creator prior to release. Aside from that, however, Spore neither broke any new ground nor even was very good at its execution of the genres it was trying to emulate in miniature. It's a bloody shame that despite this, it still was able to dupe people into paying $50 for a feature that was released in standalone version for only $10.
I don't know why the first thing that came to my mind was Pokemon, when I read this. I hope it's just my imagination.
interesting, always interested in a new ARPG and if it's done by Maxis, it should be at least of high quality.
I hate to admit it, but Delius has a point. I loved my first 20-hours in Spore. Now I can barely imagine going back. If I do, it would probably take something like Dark Spore PvP/PvE tools and content.
An action rpg based on Spore... I don't even know how to respond to that. Spore had the potential to be a great game, instead all we got were a bunch of great tools but no actual game.
As a fan of Spore, this has my interest, but not my one-day purchase. I'm going to wait on this one.
i don't know much about spore but does this mean we'll be able to like create the creature we play as in it?
Didn't excel as a tycoon/strategy game. I might have to buy it to see how in the F*** they pull this off. Scratch that, rent it.
Spore wasn't a game. Anyone who has used 3D building programs or physics programs will see the similarities betweeen them and Spore. It wasn't a game, it was a tech demo that was hyped beyond belief, and was easily one of the most disapponting titles ever.
Spore was perhaps my most disappointing game of a long time. The only really fun part was the simple evolutionary cell stage, avoiding bigger animals and all of that was amazing. I loved becoming the bigger animal and then eating the guys who used to chase me. After that though, its all repetitive and all down-hill.
Spore wasn't as awesome as it could have been, but it was still a good game with some incredible customization. Hopefully they can do better though.
Usually this kind of thing happens to games that are good, not ones that are massive disappointments
they should make all the monsters custom sporepedia creations! ...oh wait, thats spore hero ok, im out of ideas, whatcha got maxis?
if its anything like the space stage.. great. if its anything like.. well.. anything else... *vomits*
This does not look like a fun game for me, but I could see a lot of women playing this and enjoying it. Its just too cute and soft looking. I never heard of this until now...but either way I hope it does well for the audience that likes it.
Spore could have been such a great game, too bad it never lived up to the vision. Not really interested in this.
umm how can you bash a game that we know nothing about? all it says is that it will use Spore's DNA, and if that means the creators, the grand scale, or its ambition, how can you write it off so easily?
An Action RPG instead of a proper strategy game? I'm going to have to see this one myself, but I'm not getting the best vibe.
Can't wait for this! Hopefully they don't make the requirements for the game much higher than the first because my computer sucks!
