The Cave coming from Double Fine in 2013
Sega teaming with Ron Gilbert and Psychonauts studio for side-scrolling adventure game on XBLA, PSN, and PC early next year.
The latest from Monkey Island developer Ron Gilbert and Psychonauts studio Double Fine will be a new downloadable side-scrolling game called The Cave. Due out in early 2013, the game will be published by Sega and will see release on Xbox Live Arcade, the PlayStation Network, and PC.
Speculation that Double Fine was at work on a project called The Cave sparked in February, when the developer filed a trademark application for a game with such a name.
In The Cave, players will take charge of three "unlikely adventurers," each boasting their own unique personalities and skills. Details are thin on the project, but Sega said players will encounter an underground amusement park, a medieval castle, and even a nuclear-tipped intercontinental ballistic missile.
In March, Sega announced a restructuring plan that would refocus the publisher's aim on digital content. Sega senior vice president of digital business Haruki Satomi said the push to publish The Cave came as a result of this new focus.
"As Sega continues to expand our digital gaming catalog, we've put a lot of effort into finding truly original experiences we can help bring to life. Both Ron and the team at Double Fine are experienced and deeply creative, and we value the chance to work with them on The Cave," he said.
A teaser website for The Cave is now live, and it depicts a starry night sky with a series of unique characters standing around a campfire. For more on the just-announced project, check out the game's first trailer, embedded below.
