Time names 100 best games by decade

"But what about my favorite games? Since they're not included this list sucks and is worthless!" That's a common and perhaps wanted reaction when making lists, because it's better to be hated than ignored. Anyway, without reading the list I bet I'll disagree with many selections and so I won't give it much weight, but that's not the point of these lists. What is the point of these lists? I don't know, but people like reading them and like to dislike them so there is some public interest/demand involved.

 We all have our personal favorites - even though any hardcore gamer can agree with half this list, the other half I'm sure everyone can slide in their own personal favorites.  Regardless of that, the one missing I find the most peculiar is Phantasy Star 2.  Phantasy Star 2 was the most pivotal console RPG of it's time.  It was the standard barer for all RPG's that came out afterwards

half life isn't even on the list.... therefore, this list is terrible.... then again, I wouldnt expect TIME magazine to know a damn thing about videogames.

The largest miss in here is probably that there isn't a single pokemon game. Pokemon, y'know, being the single most influential RPG ever. That RPG series which spawned one of the most popular animes, card games, and merchandise franchises of all time.

Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom is the greatest game of all time.

Most list like these are annoying in some way, but this list is just incompetent.

What a great list.  I never knew that Angry Birds is one of the top 100 games of all time, even better than games like Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, Super Metroid, Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time, GTA: San Andreas, God of War 1 and 2, Resident Evil 4, etc. etc. etc....

if they want to create top game list of all time,it will be top 1000 game of your life

This list would make sense based on a game's influence in pop culture for a given decade.  This decade isn't over yet and too many popular games have spawned, it will be interesting to see which game or game genres come out on top.

That "Time" list is a joke.

Weird to not see Uncharted. Ofcourse everybody has his/her favourites, but to me Uncharted set the standard in next-gen gaming (now current-gen)

At first when I read this article I thought it was going to consist of nothing but the popular more known, mainstream titles. Then I clicked on the list and it all went away when I saw Demon's Souls on it. And Solitaire? WTF 

I suppose I could quibble - I'd have put Super Mario Bros. 3 over SMB 64 , Mass Effect 2 over 3, Limbo over Braid, no Assassin's Creed or Fallout entry - it's overall a good list, in large part because of the well-written explanation behind why each entry on the list is there.

And it's easy to nitpick a list like this.  The concept of what makes something worth entry in a Top 100 (or other number) list is nebulous at best.  Is it purely quality?  Ms. Pac Man is a better game in every way than Pac Man, and the first game in a given series is often surpassed as the makers learn what does and doesn't work for a given franchise.  Popularity?  Braid sold well for a download only game, but others have sold better.  Influence?  Undoubtedly an important factor given the number of entries included because they created or popularized genres or franchises.

Different people are going to balance these factors differently.  Influence is obviously the dominant factor on this list, given how many games are included over sequels that are of arguably higher quality.

Then again, that's why people make lists like this - to promote discussion about what does and doesn't belong on such a list and why.  While I can look at the list and think that there perhaps are a few missing that I'd like to have seen included, I don't see any that I've played that I can make a case against, and arguing that a game doesn't deserve inclusion because I haven't played/heard of it is arguing from ignorance, a pretty basic logical fallacy.

Can GS please do a list like this and show them how it should be done. Mass Effect 3?? Really??

Makes me wonder if the person making the list is even a gamer. 

FYI if they said Mass Effect 1 i would of agreed.

Then they said Mass Effect 3 and lost all credibility.

i saw king's quest, leisure suit larry, wing commander, dune 2, grim fandango... agree with a lot of the picks not just nostalgia, but the quality of story and design.

without dune 2, there would be no warcraft/starcraft.

i havnt even heard of most of the games on that list... like wheres command & conquer?

Hopefully big franchises like "Bioshock', "Resident Evil", "Madden NFL", "Street Fighter", "Mortal Kombat", "Uncharted", "Heavy Rain", "Metroid", "Mario Kart", "Halo", "Gears of War", "Alan Wake", "Punch Out!", "Super Smash Bros.", "Metal Gear Solid", "Castlevania", "God of War", "Resistance", "Megaman", "Twisted Metal", "Shenmue" and "Virtua Fighter" will be on the Top 100 list.

based on what exactly, profit and sales? because i can't imagine any other criteria that aren't practically numbers to be the base of such a list.

This list was based on the number of units sold and nothing else was considered. This list is retarded.

You can tell they know nothing about games, and just looked up the most popular or best selling games of all time and selected ones they'd heard their kids might have played, because they left off lesser-known games which are widely considered the best of their generation, platform or genre.

Shenmue, River City Ransom, Monkey Island, Red Dead Redemption, Ocarina of Time, Baldur's Gate 2, Mass Effect 2 (NOT 3), Xcom: Enemy Unknown, Fallout (ANY of them) and Pokemon? Their list shows a lack of gaming knowledge and a lack of appreciation for what makes a game great.

I beileve in 10 years Mass Effect will get the praise it deserves from Gamers. Or at least I hope because hands-down it's the best new IP to come out of the Gen.
