Am I missing something or did you not mention the PC? Is it not due out March 5, 2013 for PC, along with the other platforms? Don't take it as bashing for the smallest detail for the sake of bashing, I'm genuinely uncertain. Otherwise, very explicit news!
Upcoming reboot to include standard Team Deathmatch mode, as well as "Rescue" and "Cry For Help" gametypes.
The first information concerning Tomb Raider's newly announced multiplayer mode has come to light. Details were published in this month's issue of Official Xbox Magazine and were summarized by a Tomb Raider forum user.
First, Tomb Raider will feature the standard Team Deathmatch gametype. This mode pits a squad of Lara Croft's allies against a group of natives referred to as "scavengers." Gamers will alternate between sides throughout the course of a best-of-three match.
Maps will feature lever-based traps that shoot spikes out of walls, climable surfaces, destroyable environments, and a weapon arsenal that includes Lara's iconic bow and arrow.
A second gametype is called "Rescue" and has one side (Survivors) collecting med-packs and delivering them to rotating destinations, while the opposite side (Scavengers) attempts to reach a requisite kill count to end the match.
A third gametype--"Cry for Help"--was teased. This mode will reportedly place emphasis on "discovery and collection," though no other information is available.
Overall, players will be able to select from a "deep roster" of characters for Tomb Raider's multiplayer component. Gamers will be equipped with a primary weapon, a sidearm, grenade-style projectiles, and a climbing axe that doubles as a melee weapon.
... MP huh? I'll give it a try. Maybe i will like it. But, I hope the SP is amazing, which is the selling point for me.
I'm not going to pretend I haven't noticed that every time there's a Tomb Raider article the picture on the homepage has a good view of breasts.

the funny thing is the`ve been trying to get multiplayer in tr for years. now they do and all there getting is people complaining.i glad i have another mode play besides single player.i find the more modes a game has the options you have when you play. at least i have a choice. unlike other games.
Tomb Raider has always been a die hard single player game, it's only logical that the old skool fans are alienated with multiplayer being added.
Call me crazy but I personally hate it when old franchises try to appeal to a new and wider audience. Identity down the drain.
why wouldn't they want a wider audience ? Means mores sales, Plus there isn't that big of a back lash from this anouncement considering only 150 people have replied to it.
As long as they have local multiplayer, I'll be happy. I don't understand why so many games only let you play online multiplayer and not local anymore. Sitting with friends and playing a game is the best way to spend a weekend.
Yawn. The could've come up with so much interesting stuff for multiplayer, yet they just fuck it up.
Why does everyone hate multi so much ? I mean yes , they can focus more on SP but i guess they think the present SP is good enough . I don't think add more stuffs to the game is bad unless those things sucks .
I don't get it - First they steal back the Uncharted gameplay, and now they steal their multiplayer?
@Dominuss The 'fluid' climbing and dodging that you call 'Uncharted gameplay' was intruduced in Tomb Raider Legend (released 1,5 years before the first Uncharted game) and perfected in Tomb Raider Anniversary, released 6 months before the first Uncharted game.

I don't know about perfected. I said stole back, because yeah - Tomb Raider started it all, but it wasn't really done right up until Uncharted and their dynamic camera and direction (as in game Director vision).
I like Tomb Raider. Always have. But nothing did it quite like Uncharted before. Can't argue with that. Won't. And now, I can't wait to play the new Tomb Raider - because there's no more uncharted but there is a Tomb Raider that reminds me of it, although I can't get past the Multiplayer idea. Sorry.
How can you steal back an idea that was yours to start with ?
Am I the only one who might actually play multiplayer and hope that it adds life to the game beyond the initial single player campaign?
I get that most people think it's a waste of resources since it's 'not' what made Tomb Raider popular, but what about looking on the bright side? We're getting it no matter what, and it could actually be fun. I can think of several other games that added multiplayer that ended up being quite fun.
@pathosfire Yeah, you're right, but in many cases your opinion is dangerous and makes more common developers include multiplayer with that excuse, give long term, replayability or something like that, but in the core It could be just a way to hide a mediocre campaign.
Another motive to include multiplayer? Obvious, online pass.
@AzulSoul Lets talk about the online passes shall we? I know you don't want to pay more money for the online pass. Who would? You buy a game like Max Payne 3 (which up until it had always been a single player only game). And then Rockstar introduces their Social Club Pass which is supposed to give you discounts on multiplayer content... but its optional, you don't have to buy the Social Club Pass if you don't want to. And you could still play the multiplayer. Recently they released a couple multiplayer compatibility packs. They were free. As for the memory space? That's what the cloud's for and its free (well it comes with your Xbox live account). The online pass could be treated by Crystal Dynamics in much the same way as Rockstar is doing it. Making it optional not forcing you to buy it nor anything to play the multiplayer. In fact I hope they do take that tact from Rockstar games. It would be better for the overall experience to have that as a choice and not be forced to make it.
I was going to put this on my "must pre-order" list when i first saw it but now it just keeps going downhill....i need to see a review before i get this
It seems like these days any game that doesn't have multiplayer is crap...why must Tomb Raider follow this trend? I'd rather have Crystal Dynamics put their efforts into refining the gameplay, story, and graphics instead of multiplayer.
@Bayonetta2013 Actually if the gameplay elements werent refined enough to stand on their own in the single player the multiplayer is just going to make them that much more obvious which would then further detract from the experience. In other words in order for multiplayer to be warranted as a bonus the developers have to nail the gameplay mechanics for the single player because everyone will be forced to use those mechanics in the multiplayer otherwise they'll deliver a disjointed gaming experience that isn't self sufficient.
@Bayonetta2013 I agree AC is another game that followed this trend and like TR is an SP game at its core ......

1 - You won't sell 20M plus copies like COD.
2 - You won't prevent anyone from buying your game used because the people interested in TR in the first place; couldn't care less for the useless multiplayer.

Probably another game that i'm excited to play it's singleplayer component. but will likely never touch it's multiplayer.
also a game where i'm willing to bet it's multiplayer community will dry up like a puddle of water in the desert just as when the water fell from the sky.
go back to this game in 6 months or later and find either elite player only, or nobody.

Singleplayer is fine but you rarely play it for six months
@beauregarde12 @SaudiFury This has got to be the single most deluded opinion I've ever witnessed. NO ONE is going to be playing TR's multiplayer after two weeks, much less six months. Even then it's stupid as hell that Tomb Raider has Multiplayer to begin with. I've played Way of the Samurai 2 ( A PS2 GAME) FOR TWO FREAKIN YEARS.
That game had no multiplayer element at all. Wanna know why I played it so long? Because it was a good game with tons of effing replay value. And the fact that you could beat the game (technically) in less than an hour makes this whole thing even more hilarious. But I'm afraid no one's laughing with you. They're laughing AT YOU
your using a fallacy to justify your statement. no one is going to be playing the same missions for 2 years straight. Everyone moves on, but anyone can still re-visit the games they loved (i'm right now replaying Heavenly Sword). Not everyone can revisit older multiplayer games and enjoy the same community as it was on day 1. A great personal example is Battlefield 2 (which was a HUGE success) - it's online community today is nothing like when it first launched, only like 2-3 maps ever get used out of the 20+ great maps that were developed.
I could just as easily make fun of the multiplayer "team deathmatch?! holy $hit!!! it's not like every multiplayer has it already! what are the rules?! oh that's right shoot the other person! we've never seen that before!" i'm being sarcastic.
and your totally right, this game COULD potentially have an audience that lasts, just like Mass Effect 3. But if I were a betting man, i'd say no. ESPECIALLY when it's a series that is well established of being known as a single player game, and it's mode got quietly announced (no pics no video) 2 months before release day.

singleplayer is whenever you want to play it, a lot of folks will be playing it when it launches. there might be some talk about it depending on how good/bad it is or whatever controversy that may come from it.
Many MANY games with multiplayer components attached are nothing more then ghost towns or have an incredibly small elite community playing the same few maps again and again.
multiplayer requires a greater investment of time on players, and with so many other games to choose from, your going to have large swathes of multiplayer components to games with no one in them.
and to those gamers who ARE excited for this, it'll be to their upset to find that in all likelihood this game too will turn into a ghost town not too long after launch.
Meanwhile you got millions of players still playing, still fully invested in multiplayer oriented games from Team Fortress, Battlefield, Call of Duty, to any number of the big successful MMO's.
that's not me being negative, that's just an observation from playing so many games. but people INSIST that they have to have that checkbox "multiplayer" checked, because without it, it isn't worth their time.
Personally i'd love it if developers made sku's of their games, just example : 60 bucks for whole game, 30 bucks for either half.
But i can imagine why they wouldn't do that. almost no one would buy campaign for Call of Duty, and no one would buy multiplayer for God of War..
Still... i'd buy more games that way if they did it. A lot of games i have 0 interest in it's multiplayer component.
The difference is if you wanted to you could play the singleplayer six months or six years from release, For multiplayer in games that aren't Halo, CoD, or Gears the multiplayer community quickly dries up, especially when the next Halo, CoD, or Gears comes out. And wouldn't ya know it the next Gears comes out two weeks after Tomb Raider. So yeah Tomb Raider's tacked-on multiplayer isn't even going to last 6 months.
Truth be told @catsimboy, sometimes people feel nostalgia for the same game at the same time, sometimes the more the merrier, even if the community does dry up it won't necessarily be a dead multiplayer experience unless they follow the botless trend. As long as they include bots that have decent AI to accomdate players who want to try the multiplayer even when other people arent around theres hope for a sustained community. Failure to include bots may hurt their bottomline but I dont know how addictive the multiplayer experience may be nor all those important details like whether or not they included bots, matchmaking of any kind, a lobby to wait for other gamers to join in. And despite the fact I own a few COD games I don't really feel that compelled to play them. Nor Halo 4 for that matter
