Tomb Raider sequel teased

Crystal Dynamics global brand director says "It's not just one game" in reference to Lara Croft's origin story.

Despite the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot being some eight months away, developer Crystal Dynamics is already talking about plans for Lara Croft's future. Speaking to Videogamer, global brand director Karl Stewart teased that 2013's Tomb Raider is only the beginning of Croft's journey.

"You have to look at the future, you have to look at where…It's not just one game," Stewart said. "I have to be careful because I know exactly where she's going."

Stewart explained that with 2013's Tomb Raider, the goal for Crystal Dynamics is to establish Lara Croft as a "strong female character that is willing to go out and seek out mysteries." To tell her entire origin story will require at least another game, he teased.

"She's going to be going to plenty of tombs in this game, but we're going to have somebody who wants to go on that adventure, who wants to be the person that she now is," he said. "That's the goal."

Yesterday, it was announced that Camilla Luddington (William & Kate, True Blood, Californication) would provide the voice and performance for Croft in Tomb Raider.

In addition to Tomb Raider, Crystal Dynamics is working on an all-new intellectual property. In March, parent company Square Enix announced that God of War director Cory Barlog had joined the company to contribute to Tomb Raider and an unannounced game. Later that month, a report surfaced suggesting that Crystal Dynamics was developing a Soul Reaver reboot.

Please just have less orgasmic screaming in future releases.... I had to turn down the volume for the E3 demo so my siblings were not thinking I was watching some violent porn

@BelaidKL I can imagine the hard time younger gamers will have playing this while their parents are home.

I hope the campaign is at least 15 hours. Especialy since they pushed the game to 2013!

What's the point of making an origin story and piecing together all of this character development if you don't plan on doing anything with it in the future? I say let the sequels come.

Call me stupid, but I think they should probably wait for this one to be released before they plan any sequels. Remember what happened to Too Human?

The_Dragon_Wolf
The_Dragon_Wolf

@RulerofGondor I don't think what happened to Too Human had anything to do with planning a sequel in advance .. "planning" not developing .. it's still just an idea ... and it happens all the time in movie trilogies and games industry .. why are people making a big fuss about this !!!!!?

Crazier things have have happened but I was never convinced one game would be enough for her to complete her transformation from this inexperienced girl to the determined Lara Croft everyone knows. Also they're rebooting the series, you think they won't make sequels with the new Lara? It was inevitable

Wait? Already talking about a sequel? ''To tell her entire origin story will require at least another game''

Why don't you guys make a full game with good content, without taking out things so that you can make another game and than consider a sequel to the reboot? Because that's what I'm reading here. Splitting her origin story into two to get more money.

A reboot? What, you can't get new ideas and you want to recicle characters to capitalize on their past successes?

Wasn't there already a remake or Tomb Raider 1 a couple of years ago?

Soon to be announce, the origin story is a Trilogy!

Why is Lara "a strong female character that is willing to go out and seek out mysteries" rather than "a strong character that is willing to go out and seek out mysteries"?

sachind1231
sachind1231

@Razorlight6 ...because she's a female. or a really convincing transgender. I think you're reading too deeply into this

Ducez_III
Ducez_III like.author.displayName 1 Like

@Razorlight6 @sachind1231 Razorlight's not reading too deep, the claim is legitimate and people ask that same question all the time. When there's a strong male lead no one ever feels the need to highlight the character's gender but when there's a strong female role gender is always specified. My belief is that it's because women don't usually have those kinds of roles.

Charlize Theron talked about this in a couple interviews for Snow White and the Huntsman

sachind1231
sachind1231

@Ducez_III Fair enough. And agreed, it's because her role is, for better or worse, atypical in our world, and Square merely wants to highlight that she's breaking the norm for video game characters.

Ugh. That to me sounds like a dead giveaway that the reboot's going to have a cliffhanger ending. I hope I'm wrong, because I hate cliffhangers.

Please don't talk about sequel if you haven't released the reboot. That's a red flag for some of us indicating this one will be short. And saying, "To tell her entire origin story will require at least another game.", made us think this one will have cliffhanger ending.

@Everiezbased on 99% of games nowadays, i thought everyone already assumed it's going to be that kind of short game.  even average length games are starting to be few and far between

How about release and worry about the first game then well talk and care about the 2nd.

I am still debating on whether or not I can forgive this franchise for "The Angel of Darkness"  I don't think I have ever been so angry about spending 50 dollars all those years ago.  There were so many glitches in that game I couldn't even get through 25% of it.  Yes I tend to hold grudges......

Well, lets just get the game out first, then we'll worry about the sequel. Jokes aside, I think most companies, or a lot of companies are doing this now. I know the AC series did it. I know Beenox did it with their 2 latest Spiderman games. Even Epic was working on this GEars adaptation while Gears 3 was in development. I just can't wait to get my hands on this new Tomb Raider, as it looks amazing! I actually saw potential in the last TR, so hopefully they build off of that.

No surprise. These days sequels are almost required to make money off the investment on a game engine IMO.

Even so. I hope this game has a high focus on exploration and Lara vs the environment, with difficult puzzles and a lack of "press X for hints". Because Tomb Raider to me is mostly about exploring the environment - a lot of what I've seen just looks like Uncharted Starring Lara Croft.

A sequel? In the video game industry? Wow, seems like uncharted territory, but I guess its worth a shot, right?

Let me guess, two short games that could be merged into a normal-length games, but they could not make more money off this.
