EA's latest horror shooter the biggest launch of the year so far, as Ni no Kuni drops to sixth.
EA's micro-transaction tinged horror shooter Dead Space 3 has blasted its way to the top of the UK charts, though sales were down 26 percent compared to its predecessor.
Dead Space 2 launched at a similar period in 2011, though the third game has garnered its fair share of criticism thanks to its choice to include an action-heavy co-op campaign and generous portions of microtransactions.
Chart positions 2 to 5 remained the same, with 2013's usual suspects filling out the list: FIFA 13, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Far Cry 3 and Hitman: HD Trilogy.
Last week's chart winner, Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, saw a 63% drop in sales and landed in sixth place.
The rest of the top 10 is also familiar. Need for Speed: Most Wanted is in seventh, Just Dance 4 eighth, Hitman: Absolution ninth and, thanks to the 3DS release of the game, Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing Transformed finishes tenth.
Elsewhere in the chart, and perhaps buoyed by Super Bowl XLVII, was Madden 13 in 19th place. DmC: Devil May Cry, which sat atop the chart but three weeks ago, slipped to 25th.
This week sees the release of Gearbox's Aliens: Colonial Marines on Tuesday February 12 - will it be able to knock Dead Space 3 off the top next week?

Hell, the only third game in a series I see myself buying is Bioshock. Why? Can already tell that it's upping the anty in a GOOD way. Oh, and The Witcher 3 I'm sure will be awesome.

Ok Dead Space 1 was a fresh game and had great ideas and without a doubt was a scary game. but still i found some points of it repetitive on the tram back on the tram. Dead Space 3 for me was a great game, no it wasnt dead space 1 but to be truthful if it was dead space 1 again... well i would just play dead space 1. All your winging and complaining saying we want survival horror or we want this and want that is pointless and sooner or later they will stop pumping money into the design of games and stop trying new ideas and just have walking round picking up ammo trying not to use it all drinking water eating food to stay alive and to be truthful it would be boring. I hate games like the COD franchise I really do but I also except people like playing it. Each to there own... Dead Space 3 has some epic moments in, especially floating round space and the visuals are breath taking I mean I can create a gun that has a shot gun then connect rocket launcher to it that is awesome stuff. and there are freaky moments in dead space 3 but it also was an epic adventure.
so i would like to thank visceral games for the time and effort you can tell they put into the game... Also looking forward to a year of gaming from games such as The Last Of Us, Bioshock, Tomb Raider, Watch Dogs, Grand Theft Auto, Remember Me, Gears Of War and many more. I love gaming always have since I played super Mario and what game developers create these days is amazing. So all you people winging and moaning, this isnt what i wanted chill because if we do stop spending money and games go down the same root as music and cinema then you will something to complain about.
@pulpsmith I find Dead Space 3 alright. It has fun gun play and good scenery but there are way too many events that could never in a million years happen (besides the monsters and all that stuff) which kinda ruins it for me. Spoilers: I'm mainly referring to two moments. One where you need to prep a shuttle for launch. When the launch sequence is initiated everything is engulfed in flames. Apparently nobody cares for safety around there because there are fires everywhere! And at the end of that you need to shoot some stupid exploding barrels that are stuck in some gears. Not only are you supplied with two turrets conveniently placed in front of where you need to fire, but the gears don't mind taking hails upon hails of bullets and explosions. Oh and of course there is a swarm of enemies that drop from above that you would never have been able to take out without those turrets. The game completely lacks subtlety.
I also wouldn't mind being able to move up and down ladders faster. In coop, there isn't any horror factor anyway and waiting for your partner to use the ladder can be annoying.
I've yet to complete it. I've put 6 hours into it and I'm nowhere near the end so we'll see if it manages to amaze me.

Enjoy the sales you'll make from blind believers and unaware people by abusing the SimCity franchise name, because after that you won't sell any SimCity title ever again too.
Well, that is completely expected when you revamp your game, not to be better, but to appeal to more people....you end up alienating everyone. The action crowd will say its not innovative enough and the horror crowd will say there isn't enough actual horror. In seeking to boast profits, EA lost profits. If you make something you honestly feel is great, chances are it will do well, if you leash creativity for the bottom line, chances are you won't do so well.

and Ni No Kuni saw such a huge drop in sales because its out of stock everywhere, me and 3 friends are all still waiting to recieve copies that were pre-ordered, so anyone that just tried to go out and buy it didnt really stand a chance of getting a copy
I loved the 1st Dead Space, replayed it a couple of times, had nightmares about it, sometimes was scared to pick up my controller. When will they learn. The fans is what makes the $$$.
1 Like YES!!! I hope fan of the "Horror Oriented Dead Space" stay away from this new way of devs to get a fatter pay check. Straying away from the core elements of a game is pretty much a message to the fans that says "I want your money, i dont care about you" or simply put "F**k You, Fans".
1 Like Honestly, microtransactions are not even the biggest problem with DS3. The bigger problem is that the gameplay got completely gutted in an attempt to appeal to the Call of Duty crowds.
More action is not necessarily a bad thing, but not when you are trying to make an action game by simply turning up the number of enemies and ammo drops by 10x. Don't even get me started on the universal ammo that took a lot of strategy and thinking out of your combat loadout. The crafting system is an interesting change, but it still doesn't hold a candle to the depth and versatility of the individual upgrade trees for each weapon in DS/DS2. One of the more fun things to do in the earlier DS series was to play on new game+ and upgrade some of the weapons that didn't get much playtime on the first playthrough. DS3? Forget it! The campaign is pretty decent, but it's definitely padded up to the point of getting tedious.
@dagamer667 I completely agree. Microtransactions can be completely ignored, but what cannot be ignored are some of the terrible sequences, most notably the climbing and rappelling. The addition of the crouch button gets used maybe 3-4 times throughout the whole 20 hours. Hit detection and collisions on the edges of things can be pretty annoying. And why the hell should you have to complete the game in order to play classic mode? Blah. DS1>DS2>DS3

1 Like I am sure some of you have seen the commercial spot for Dead Space 3 on TV. The narrator really does say one of the best games this generation. Sorry, I know it's not a bad game whatsoever, but they are going out on a limb they have no idea how to navigate. I know all commercials oversell their product, but most gamers over a certain age are not idiots.

Gamers need to start sending messages like this through sales when they ruin the games we love. I was a huge fan of 1 and 2 but I won't touch 3 just on principle.
26% less is ok because they'll make it up from all the mobile people they brought over with IAP. I hear those guys need IAP in their games.
i have to admit that the first 10 chapters of Dead Space 3 is pretty awful. It's too damn easy and far from scary but after the 12th chapter, the game suddenly raise its challenge. Fighting Twitcher and enhanced Waster are pretty intense especially on the Disposal Facility side mission. I suddenly feel the same intense feeling like when i play the impossible mode on Dead Space.
Dead Space 3 definitely have its flaws compare to Dead Space 2, the story and the characters is less compelling and the new autosave feature is completely stupid. But in my opinion the game still retain its atmosphere (thanks to the awesome graphics with the amazing lightning effects) and gameplay (at least for the later chapters)

Instead they ruined the last good true survival horror game and didnt even get a larger fan base, the ruined the existing one!!!! Thanks. Dead space series was on my top ten favorite games of all time list. Not anymore. When are they going to make a multiplayer exclusive dead space game like raccoon city. That was such a success and all.

At least on the PC side of things, Dead Space 3 is at a disadvantage because EA did not release it on Steam, as they did with Dead Space 2. Many PC gamers can't stand Origin and if it doesn't release on Steam, then it doesn't exist... (I must admit I'm somewhat guilty of this)
Honestly this hate of origin is really unjustified. I have both Origin and Steam, and had more problems with Steam than Origin.
@KodiakKoolaid @GatorMan Mostly for me it is not a hate of the platform (which is steadily improving, and honestly Steam wasn't great when it first came out) but a hate of the practices that are behind it. Steam puts out sales regularly. I know that if I can wait a bit, I'll be able to get that $50 or $60 game for $30 or $40. EA/Origin treats sales like they are the worst thing in the world, and they do them far less often. It's not that I HATE Origin, I just feel like my money goes further on Steam. Honestly, the best way I've found to buy something on Origin is to buy the game on Amazon digital (where they have good sales) and input the serial key manually on Origin... kinda goes against the principal, though. :-)
@GatorMan EA Origin regional Prices on 3rd world countries are very low compared to steam. EA doing 4 or 5 Origin sales every year. EA said they are adding lots of features to Origin soon ( including achievements & social features) Give EA some time.Origin came alive 1.5years ago & its still in Beta. This is not the Final version of Origin EA planned.

Yeah EA did say big sales devalued the games or something but I think they have secretly backtracked on that.
For example, Origin in my country (Singapore) is now having a big Lunar New Years Sale with up to 70% off.
Maybe it was just one corporate suit idiot who gave that opinion.
Another perk of Origin for me at least is that games are priced cheaper than if I was to buy from a US site like Steam cause they scale the prices to local prices which I appreciate.

I blame Origin exclusivity. My internet was down for a day, and I'm hooked to the game, but can you imagine what could happened if I used the Origin version with it's online DRM 'goodness'? my day could be ruined, yeah.
