Uncharted 2 De-Twittered
Twitter users may have noticed recent entries from their friends touting mundane gaming accomplishments like "successfully executed a Fierce Shoryuken with Ken in #STREETFIGHTERIV" or "ate a hamburger in #FINALFIGHT." It wasn't a rash of misplaced bravado to blame for the Twitter twaddle, though...
Twitter users may have noticed recent entries from their friends touting mundane gaming accomplishments like "successfully executed a Fierce Shoryuken with Ken in #STREETFIGHTERIV" or "ate a hamburger in #FINALFIGHT." It wasn't a rash of misplaced bravado to blame for the Twitter twaddle, though. It was instead a simple meme mocking a new feature in Uncharted 2.
Among the Naughty Dog's game's features is the option to tie the game to one's Twitter account and have it post updates on the player's progress to the site automatically. While the game isn't out until October 13, a number of press with review copies of the game had their Twitter feeds flooded with updates like "completed chapter 10 in #UNCHARTED2," sometimes with multiple such updates each hour.
Naughty Dog took note, and in a post on the official PlayStation blog today, company copresident Evan Wells addressed the issue today.
"We obviously want to provide the best experience for everybody, so for the time being we've disabled Twitter updates on chapter completions," Wells said, adding, "We're certainly sorry for any inconvenience, but I guess that's the risk you run when trying to blaze a new trail in the complicated world of social media!"
When the game launches, players will still be able to see the option to link their Twitter accounts in the menu screens, but it won't actually do anything. However, Naughty Dog does plan to reactivate the feature with a patch to come out "some time after the game has shipped." Additionally, when the function does reappear, it will do so with a cap on the frequency of Twitter updates.

Isn't Twitter just Facebook's/Myspace's status? How did it get so popular?
I agree Twitter is crap. The only reason I have one if for some insane reason, companies think it is a good way to outlet information. Infinity Ward announced they will not have a demo on Twitter, Playstation is giving away PSP games on Twitter, and Naughty Dog was giving away beta codes! I dont use Twitter for personal posts or to see what my friends are doing. I'd rather use a phone for that. I feel that i need to check my Twitter every so often though so that I don't miss out. Oh and I use it to follow my 49ers since im on the other side of the country =)
-Yea what they said.. What's the point in tweeting what someone does every two hours?! It's MUCH better just to say something only once here! :-) Kidding.. It doesn't make any sense to me either to report to the whole world every detail of your life; "Oh, I just got to toilette, and it was awful in there and I'm just happy to be here now afterwards and alive and well..."
I agree wholeheartedly, I have a facebook account where I have few friends on it, but after a few weeks, it got boring", now my best friend who has his accnt is always saying, "Gee, I need to water my corn/take my cookies out of the oven" or some stupid thing, get a job and get a real life..sheesh. Twitter+Facebook= Fads!!
Things like Twitter and Facebook astound me with their popularity and success. My girlfriend and my mom made me get a Facebook account, and it's amazing how much it encourages voyeurism and exhibitionism in a fashion. And Twitter seems even worse...not only am I pretty sure most people couldn't give a damn what I'm doing, but I don't particularly want them to know, really. I kinda like my privacy...people addicted to Twitter and Facebook and feel the need to constantly update during the day really need to learn to keep a bit of mystery about themselves and stop sharing ever little damn thing about themselves. -=x
Twitter might be around for a little bit longer, but I'm pretty sure people are tired of looking at "Just went to the moves and had some popcorn" You know what? I DONT CARE! Same with facebook and everyone's updating every 3 hours. I DONT CARE! Whew.
twitter=fail

Why can't people just keep stuff to themselves? I hate twitter! I don't understand why people feel the need to tell everyone what they are doing, or care what other people are doing at any given time. to punchultimate: Why do you want a trophy twitter, do you really want to show everybody when you get a trophy...i don't think anyone else cares. That is an example of something you can keep to yourself. i just had to get this off my chest because im sick of hearing about twitter.
: just threw up in mouth a little realizing how much companies want me to tweet my every waking moment.
i think this is a cool feature and i hope they get it debugged before long. i mostly want it for the trophy twitter. and to those who complain about it showing up on their twitter accounts i guess you dont really care about those people youre following.
Orly?! So now Twitter sucks...
seriously, I dun even have that much time for my own life, why would I wan to care what other people do in their life? And I'm definitely not THAT attention seeking as to tell the whole world what I'm doing every minute.
Twitter is for people who think that their mundane lives is worth sharing - it's a popularity contest tool... basically, it's a tool for tools
In the words of Yahtzee "Twitter is balls"
I agree.
I dont get what twitter is even for? Whats the use of it? Waste of time and money in my mind.
I don't have a Twitter account & don't plan on opening one. Another fad website that's a waste of time & worthless.
Twitter is the most retarded thing man has ever created.
twitter breeds stalkers... hope it dies, but it won't
I really couldn't care less. Twitter's a fad.
Yea... Isn't this what trophies are for?
i thought this was a dumb idea in the first place lol but cant WAIT for U2
I agree with nickscho about just having one twitter-sync thingy per PS3 instead of only certain games. However, I'm only speculating about this, since I don't have a twitter account. (I tend to do that sort of thing.)
"does anyone know if they fixed the jumping in uncharted 2. i almost didnt finish the first one because the jumping was so bad" About the only thing I can complain about is that the 'jump to ledge' detection was a bit off sometimes, but other than that it's a regular guy doing regular jumps. Nate isn't Mario, he can't jump three times his height. Can you?
does anyone know if they fixed the jumping in uncharted 2. i almost didnt finish the first one because the jumping was so bad
The idea of twitter is great if you're a celebrity, or own a restaurant or other business. but do we really need every day jaggoffs tweeting "taking a sh*t", "waiting for movie to start", "just beat chapter 1 on uncharted 2"?
@nickscho I agree with you, this does seem like one of those 'sounded great on the drawing board' ideas. Good to see Naughty Dog took such swift notice and are making the correct changed right away.
This is interesting. Twitter was about to have a big breakthrough.
Wouldn't it be better to just tweet PSN trophies in general (which would include UC2), instead of setting up tweeting for each game separately? It just becomes a huge mess, and it's inconsistent.
