Hollywood is entirely too obsessed with live-action versions of anything. Certain stories would just be done better animated or in CG. Spider-Man, for example, is really hard to translate believably, especially the spider-sense, his incredible speed and his sick agility, but animated with dialogue that actual New Yorkers would say (not that corny, cheesy crap that was in the movie trilogy)... A good PG-13 (or even R rated) animated or CG rendered Uncharted movie with the original voice actors reprising there roles on a new story would be amazing. Hell, the Uncharted motion comics were cool and they didn't do 5% as much as they could have if they'd have had a movie budget.
David O. Russell exits big-screen adaptation of Sony and Naughty Dog's epic PlayStation 3 adventure; "creative differences" blamed.
Yet another game-to-film adaptation has hit a stumbling block, as Variety reports that Oscar-winning director David O. Russell has cut ties with the big-screen version of Uncharted, citing "creative differences." The Hollywood trade reports that the split was amicable.
Russell's departure likely means that the casting of big names like Mark Wahlberg, Amy Adams, Scarlett Johansson, and Robert DeNiro in key roles--while never officially confirmed--is likely to be redone. In February, the director said that he wanted to be respectful of the source material, but added that his goal as a filmmaker was to "create a world that is worthy of a really great film that people want to watch and rewatch."
Russell's name surfaced in relation to the Uncharted movie last May, when he was simply being considered as an option to helm the project. While it was reported that negotiations between Sony and Russell fell through in the following months, the two sides apparently worked out their initial differences, with the director's frequent collaborator Wahlberg confirming his participation in the project in November.
Uncharted joins a number of other gaming franchises to hit hurdles on the way to Hollywood. Most notably, the Peter Jackson-produced Halo film wound up in limbo after budgetary concerns surfaced, while Kane & Lynch, Dark Void, Army of Two, BioShock, Wolfenstein, and many others have started--but not yet finished--the adaptation process.
I like Mark and i like the movies and roles I've seen him in, but he was a terrible choice for Nathan Drake so the news of Russell leaving is the best news yet. NATHAN FILLION FOR DRAKE PLEASE!!!
even though I hate halo, a movie (peticularly by peter jackson) would certainly be good... It's sad that russel left, without a respected directer this shouldn't even by attempted.
Having played both games again and again, I know the source material like the back of my hand...*Raises hand and jumps up and down* Ooh! Ooh! I'll be the director! Granted, I know nothing about directing, and I'd probably turn the film into a musical...
i have an idea..and this is a bit crazy..but what if..(stay with me here)..what if when they get a new director, and the movie gets going again..what if they cast the power rangers (original mighty morphing) as the cast..think about it..red ranger-drake..green ranger-sully..pink ranger-elaina...i mean it could be pretty frikkin epic..im just sayn..i think if we all stop and think about it..it would be 1 million times more awesome than marky mark and the funky bunch
Uncharted was one of those movies that would have made it to the big screen without much difficulty... coming out of the standard game to movie failure connection. I say this because, Uncharted is almost an Indiana Jones action movie with action sequences, Indiana Jones puzzles moments, and the sexy actress elements included. Using Whalberg was not my first choice considering the Maximum Paynful experience we all lived a while back. There are so many other action stars suitable for this role that choosing a good action was not giong to be a problem. Then again ... its Holywood and Directors are more and more trying to get a big chunk of the movie pie... just look at Michael Bay!
i have never played the game but have heard it is amazing but i think instead of finding someone who looks and sounds like drake like you guyz say, they should just stick with a very good actor like Marc Wahlberg. But i think a halo movie would be great if it does not fall through the cracks like this one will.
@ulitimateRAGEX Um, movies based off of games have rarely, if ever, been good. Resident Evil was very frowned upon as well as both Tomb Raider movies, Super Mario Bros., Prince of Persia, Street Fighter, Silent Hill, Max Payne, Doom, House of the Dead, etc... We all hope that Uncharted will be a great movie because of the amazing source material (film makers could take lessons from Uncharted 2 on how to make a good blockbuster) but we all know how Hollywood can butcher something and turn it into unrecognizable dreck.
@preacha91908 He never played the games?! Ohhhh man. This is good news then. I was kinda gutted that this film was looking set to go down the crapper, but if the man in charge of it has never even played the games then I don't mind it being postponed. I want a film to do the games proud!!
i say if fillion cant play drake (he totally should though) just give it to North..i mean no1 knows drake better than him...i was so mas and amazed that they would even consider sum1 like marky mark 4 the role of drake..what the crap was he smoking..but then again the man admitted to never even playing the games so he dont even get the concept let alone the spirit of the franchise..if u havent even played the games you shouldnt even be attached to the project..btw mark walberhg as drake is like casting bill cosby as kratos...just sayn..atleast that would be entertaining
Games to movies usually do a good job, look at the Resident Evil films, those are really good. It's movies to games is what I don't like.
Screw it. Don't make the damn thing. No one can replace nolan north and richard mcgonagle as drake and sully. No one
damn i was hoping one of these video game movies that they announced would finally pull through. hopefully they can get someone new
@Stoopid_Fool Most video game movies are also bad. It doesn't really matter to me though. I think it's all just hype because there have been several game movies announced and none of them have actually produced anything.
Guys what do u think of Josh Radnor as the main part for playing Drake? I mean he looks like Nate, his voice is not similar but I think A serious looking actor like Mark Whalburg can't perform as Nathan Drake in a milion years..I mean Drake has a happy look about him but whalburg doesnt....Don't they need someone who is good at comedy? I know Josh Radnor is not that great an actor but in my eyes he's the best choice
@anthonycg Most video game movies are different from the video game. You're mad at him cause he wanted to do the same? I bet he would've made a good movie out of it, considering he's made some great ones before.
@Stoopid_Fool He was very vocal about making the movie different from the game. The only relationship between the game and the movie would be the title. The game's story was thrown out on day 1. Now why would he want the title of one of the best selling games ever and not the story? Oh wait...
Leave it alone. This is just a money maker. I would love to see the movie version but it would never live up to the game. And unless you had big Hollywood type actors it would just be obscure. They need to get Spielberg on this one!
@ShadowDragoon05 You don't know what David O. Russell was trying to do with the movie. Besides he's a great director just loook at "Three Kings" and "The Fighter".
Just take the cut scenes from Uncharted and show them on the big screen - that alone should suffice to make a decent Hollywood movie !!!
For the best. He would have produced a good movie, but it wouldn't have been in keeping with the source material.
yes i hope someone else comes for mark wahlberg perhaps nathan fillion but he needs to lose some weight first
Joe Flanigan from Stargate Atlantis would be a great Drake, his looks are very similiar and as Col. John Shepard (yeah, he had that name before the Mass Effect dude :P ) he also proofed he can play EXACTLY the type of character Nathan Drake has. For all those who don't know him: http://www.rtl2.de/images/artikelbilder/stargate_atlantis/2_staratlantis_flanigan.png
David O. Russell was trying to turn the movie into his own creation with mobsters and bull----. He didn't care about the actual story the game displayed nor the fans that it has. F him. What is needed is someone with a brain who will actually have the balls to get Nathon Fillion main the film.
No offense to anyone chanting Nathan Fillion for the role of Drake but he's a good 10 years too old for the part. I like Nathan Fillion the same as the next sci-fi nerd and his character portrayals in other things I've seen are a good fit for Drake but the age difference would just be too noticeable.
@valium88 They did make Max Payne completely different from the games but it was still a pretty good movie (imo). I didn't like it the first time I watched it either but then I accepted that it was different from the games and I loved it when I rewatched it.
I hope the movie comes out good... what am i saying?? compared to the games, this movie is going to suck.
Who cares, v game to movie adaptations suck anyway, it just gonna be a generic action adventure movie with characters named like the ones in the game.
I'm rarely into gamebased films, they hardly ever get it right. Remember Max Payne? That movie was as far from max payne as you can get. I don't think Whalberg suits the role of Drake any better than he did Max. He is an ok actor, but he should stick to what he is good at.
Nathan needs to slim down if he wants to play Drake, he's gotten a bit on the chubby side on his show.
Yes! I'm just glad to hear Wahlberg likely won't be playing Drake now! And sorry to the guys who like him, but...DeNiro...*shudder* Besides, the Uncharted games give a better experience than watching movies. A movie-version of Uncharted is actually a downgrade.
creative differences? Yeah right, like with Bioshock - the movie, it 'll be the budget. (To high for the moviestudio)
thank you God...id love fillion to play drake..but as long as marky mark stay as far away as possible i think it will be ok
Just to point out... AGAIN. Nathan Fillion is too old to play Drake. He's closer to the age required to play Sully than Drake. Check his bio, and unlike lots of stars he actually plays a little older than he is. He'd have been really good 10 years ago when he was doing Firefly but the window has closed. It's not like I have a good suggestion, perhaps a new actor not yet discovered, just Fillion is too old.
Thank god this movie has been put on ice. They have got to rethink the main role and that god-awful family of thieves storyline.
I still think Mark Whalberg as Drake would have been a horrible choice. He's not a bad actor, just doesn't seem like he has that raw sense of sarcasm and the ability to add a bit of humor to the fact that he keeps finding trouble...I think they should consider Dave Annable. I know he's not well-known, but he was on a show for abc and really seems like he would make a great Nathan drake.
THis could really work if they had Nathan Fillion as Nathan Drake! Mark Wahlberg id no Nathan Drake and though I love DeNiro, he is no Sully. Do it right or else!
