Unedited Left 4 Dead 2 banned in Australia
Valve's hyperviolent survival-horror FPS refused classification by appeal board, modified version due for release on 360, PC Nov. 17.
Australia's Classification Board remains keen on keeping the unedited version of Valve's survival horror shooter Left 4 Dead 2 out of the hands of the living. Today, the country's Classification Review Board unanimously agreed to refuse classification to the unedited version of Left 4 Dead 2. The appeal committee's decision upholds the software rating board's initial assessment from September and prevents the unedited version from being sold, advertised, or demonstrated in Australia.
In its decision, the three-member panel determined that the unedited version of Left 4 Dead 2 "contains a level of violence which is high in impact, prolonged, repeated frequently and realistic within the context of the game." The review board took exception to the "insufficient delineation between the depiction of general zombie figures and the human figures, as opposed to the clearly fictional 'infected' characters," saying this point was central in its appraisal of how the game would affect minors.
Though the unedited version of Left 4 Dead 2 is effectively banned in Australia, gamers down under will still be able to purchase and play a heavily altered edition of the game. Shortly following Valve's initial appeal of the Australian rating board's decision in October, the organization granted an MA 15+ rating to a version of the game that did not contain "depictions of decapitation, dismemberment, wound detail, or piles of dead bodies lying about the environment."
Valve had not returned requests for comment on the review board's decision as of press time. Left 4 Dead 2 is scheduled for release on the Xbox 360 and PC on November 17. For more on the sequel to last year's acclaimed co-op-heavy first-person shooter, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.
I think this AngryAussie says pretty much what needs to be said, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a0ekmn4VZWY&feature=dir FIGHT THE POWER!
@the game jr so...........? we r talking about ausralia not ireland and if we!(australia) not ireland had an R18 system in place then none of this mess wouldnt have happend! why should we be punished just because a few parents arnt strong enough to say no to there kids! so no its not justifible at all these are games for adults not kids and as an adult that lives in a supposed free country no one has the right to tell me what games i can and cant play!.
I haven't logged in a few days.... Anyway @spacemariens22 I live in Ireland (i'm not irish btw) and the thing is parents here ignore ratings because most of the this generation's parents aren't much used to the videogames. You know their generation is from the 60's, 70's and 80's. So I guess it is justifiable to get it banned...
well i play these types of games and yes its up to me if i want my kids watching or even playing these games i admit to playing co-op with my kids but i make sure they understand its just a game and you cant do those thing in real life i love being a gamer and my kids will get to enjoy better games than i will so yes its up to us as parents ...thanks ya'll
More reasons to be glad not to live down under. Wow and I thought the US and Canada was strict with things video game wise.. sounds like its 100 times worse there if they are going to this extreme. *marks Australia as a NO as possible locations to move to any time soon*
zombie movies like 28 days and dawn of the dead are readily available here in australia, as is hardcore porn if that's your thing. Yet a game with zombies is not. Stupid ratings system and its all because some people in power still think games are only for kids.
this sucks. they let us buy the last one. its just encouraging piracy. im guessing a majority of players will do what im planning on doing and either do that or import it, either way the australian economy misses out, so crap decision by the government.
...thank the Lord I don't live in Australia.
Half the fun of L4D is the gore. Man the aussie version is gonna suck xD.
Well i'm glad i don't live in Australia. sorry aussies
I really feel sorry for those living in Australia, you guys get left out of almost all the good stuff; a little blood and the ratings board pitches a b**** about it. I've already seen a few comments here and I've always believed that it's a parental responsibility to shield their children from something they think would harm them and not be the responsibility of a ratings system or a party that's looking for everybody's "best interests". Next thing you know the government will just initiate a ban on all violent video games and the whole damn thing will go underground; but that will never happen. Video games are art, I mean we allow nudity and blood and gore in films at the theater but we can't have a naked woman or man in a video game? Who comes up with these asinine standards?
If you don't want kids playing this, then its the parents responsiblity. It shouldn't be banned because it makes your eyes bleed. Why is Australia so lame, censors are bad enough on TV don't start making this trend in games. If this trend continues, games will start to have 2 different versions, one being unedited gory gore, and the other will be crappy censored. By doing this profits could substantially increase or be a wasted effort. I hope they wont censor games.
Man I feel sorry for the aussie gamers now.. that's crap... that is all zombie movies and games are.... Blood and gore
And another thing... Won't that board feel sorry when the Zombie apocalypse comes and Aussie children are woefully unprepared. Ah, finally there will be something U.S. kids will excel past other nations kids at. Test scores are not going to help you. But with plenty of practice in L4D and your second ammendment rights you may just stand a chance junior. And as a plus in the U.S. you can utter obcenities while you kill zombies to your hearts content. God bless America.
You think this is bad, there is a push down under for isp level web filtering (according to a rueters article I read online). And the list of blacklisted sites would be a state secret. You aren't even allowed to know what you are not allowed to see. And of course the iron fist is clenched in the name of, as always the children. Who would dare stand up to an effort to protect the children, sacred cow of modern western society. Pawns are expendable, so if these people really cared about kids they would stop turning them into pawns in their efforts to make society conform to their religious ideals. If I was the perfect me and rich too I would buy 100 u.s. copies and hand them out at aussie schools for free. But I'm lazy and don't want to go to a foreign prison so I'll just sit here and female dog (euphimized on purpose to foil auto censor ARRGH!).
"the organization granted an MA 15+ rating to a version of the game that did not contain "depictions of decapitation, dismemberment, wound detail, or piles of dead bodies lying about the environment."" Sounds like the aussie's are getting the hannah montana version of this one...
censorship in a democratic country. what.
:(
Agreed, if you're a gamer living in Australia piracy is the way to go. With all of this censorship and DRM garbage every single game I have looked forward to has been ruined. Stay away from this stupid country!!
All this is going to do is drive Aussies to Pirating and undergournd server gaming- which is less than ideal for valve. Epic fail on these "board of reviewers" part.
did not contain "depictions of decapitation, dismemberment, wound detail, or piles of dead bodies lying about the environment." Oh, they forgot to take out the zombies and the guns? WTF?! *sarcasm*
"insufficient delineation between the depiction of general zombie figures and the human figures, as opposed to the clearly fictional 'infected' characters," saying this point was central in its appraisal of how the game would affect minors." yes cause only little kids play this game, and i'm pretty sure if your little kids were to run into a zombie and a human side by side after playing this game they would know how to distinguish which one need there head blown off.
The government people probably wear diapers because of the frequency of wetting their pants at scary stuff. How did left4 dead 1 got in? We're not gonna become terroists or anything because of killing zombies right?
I'm sure you can buy it from play-asia.com? They are normally cheaper than the games stores here in Australia anyway, even after taking into account the postage.
the problem is, Australia doesn't classify between 15 and 18 year olds. 15+ is the maximum rating. All games therefore (decided by the 3 person panel) should be for children and adults obviously don't play computer games, so violence, sex and drug use et al is ok in movies but not video games. "daddy I saw a woman's nipples in a video game!, "was it really a video game or a movie?" "I don't know, a movie?" "that's ok then because a woman's nipples will corrupt you forever when in a video game!"
i told you put some kangaroos there valve, now Aussie are left for dead
I've got 3 choices..the first choice is: Get it from eBay, version from US or what, but no point, the price is going to be doubled for sure! 2nd choice: Get it from steam! but wait..it's still edited. 3rd choice: Download the cracked version through torrent. I think im going for this, no choice mate! IM NOT PLAYING THE EDITED ONES!
censorship can be such a sad affair...

har har xbox
Dammit!!!!!
"OMG they banned Jerry Springer on free TV and now they have taken L4D 2 away from us?" You aren't missing out on much with the Jerry Springer ban.
Im from the U.S., But let me say I sympathize with the Australian gaming community for having to put up with so much bull...
poor aussie gamers.. guess u guys only have to play spore instead lol
I have ps3 not a 360 but i just wanted to say that this is stupid i am 15 and i am not influenced by violent games i played gta 3 when i was 8 or 9 and i am not a violent person. stupid ratings board let people think 4 themselves
Come on, have a heart! Aussies need their zombies too!
ok so im going to import this.
husky, the things you mentioned have nothing to do with games, but a persons moral upbringing. Maybe you can think of another way to blow australia while talking crap about the country that allows you to type these things freely on the web.
This IMO is one of the reasons why Australians are not as effed in the head as us. They get a lot of things toned down, and I personally think that's a good thing.
Australia rocks but these video game decisions are really stupid.
Australia obviously isn't as cool as us. We get to steal, murder, sell & do drugs, purchase services from a hooker & engage in all sorts of evil things in video games. Down with people trying to do what is best for their country. Booo Censorship; gooooo evil! (if u didn't notice by now I'm being sarcastic)
@ Beawolf That would be really nice to have socialized medicine wouldnt it?
would this mean that you cant import the uncut version overseas, seein unedited version is banned?
censeroship sucks it should be up to an adult to decide what they want to see and play or watch not some censor somewhere.
@johnryandaplin Wrong. Australia (Being one of the richest countries in the world) Contributes heavily to a games overall sale count. Its been estimated as an astonishing 20% for Valve games. Losing 20% of your profits = BAD That's why we're getting this editided version. Atleast mods will make it better again.
Great, a heavily edited version of L4D2 is just what I was waiting for. I'm guessing it will look pretty **** compared to the normal release?
