Republican Tennessee senator Lamar Alexander says games more problematic than weapons because "they affect people."
Yet another politician has taken a shot at video games in the wake of the deadly Connecticut schoolhouse massacre last month. Speaking today on MSNBC's The Daily Rundown, United States senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn) said video games are a greater societal threat than guns.
"I think video games is a bigger problem than guns," he said. "Because video games affect people. But the First Amendment limits what we can do about video games and the Second Amendment to the constitution limits what we can do about guns."
Last week, democratic Connecticut senator Chris Murphy said the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting may not have happened if video games did not give the shooter a "false sense of courage."
Previously, republican New Jersey governor Chris Christie said violent games must be examined in the wake of the shooting. Before that, and just a week after the December 14 shooting, the National Rifle Association condemned violent games, saying they were partially to blame for the mass shooting.
Couldn't have put it better myself.
I just did my own research.
"dumb senators bigger problems than video games"
LOL. it's funny how so many senators are trying to find a scapegoat
HERP DERP! GUNS ARE EVIL!
HERP DEPR! VIDEO GAMES ARE EVIL!
I blame dumbasses in senate who waste tax payer money.
So senators would rather blame the video game industry before they would admit these people were just mentally disturbed individuals who had manage to commit some evil shit before anyone was able to raise any alarms?
maybe instead of finding a scapegoat and pointing fingers at NRA or Video Game Industry, perhaps they should really look into how people can see the signs of someone becoming mentally unstable and what people should do if they suspect someone of being crazy.
This guy has got to be the most ignorant, repulsively stupid and useless politician in the history of the world.
I pity the United States for even allowing a man like this a job as senator. You guys need to revolt, get rid of clowns like this guy and enact some serious gun control. The more your congress keeps talking about violent games and movies, while continuing to accept money from gun lobbyists, the longer that guns remain easy to possess, the longer your NRA and other clowns continue to parade this bullshit "right to bear arms", the more young and innocent people will die.
Every time a school or theater gets shot up, people like this stupid senator are at fault. Sitting on his hands doing nothing to solve an ongoing national crisis, and blaming an entertainment medium to divert attention from the fact that America's gun-loving culture is the root of the problem.
I'm so grateful I live in a nation where there is no "right to bear arms". I wish all you folks in the USA can someday have the same. And public healthcare. And banking regulations. And actual democratic elections instead of the farce you guys currently roll out every four years. Overthrow these bastards. You deserve better.
its easier to get a gun than a drivers licence....
Applying for jobs means multiple background checks and drug tests......
obtaining a gun...."yo you got a credit card? wait 72 hours while we search to see if you have armed robbery in your background".
I shouldn't have to take a learners permit, 100 hours of supervised driving....a drivers test, and a vision test, and a drivers written test...just to operate a vehicle! When i could easily get a gun in 2 days and steal a car myself.
PRIORITIES. video games are CDs, like a book....its an inanimate object incapable of doing harm unless your process the info and DECIDE FOR YOURSELF to do harm to others.
Guns.... just touch it with your finger and hope no one accidentally gets hurt.
"just point, and squeeze the trigger, its simple!"
Ive NEVER heard of a video game lobbyist paying off senators.... Greed drives our politics, not OBAMA not BUSH, not any party in particular. GREED from individual sectors trying to free up their restrictions to make profits. Pay off a senator....get them to blame video games, simple smoke n mirrors tactics. Except with lots of Ca$h and the cost of human lives/ well being
I just played Doom, Far Cry, Bulletstorm, all the Call of Dutys, and Crysis 1 & 2... MUST SHOOT PEOPLE... MUST GO ON RAMPAGE...
these ppl obviously have mental health issues. never played a game where u go to school and randomly start shooting ppl. goverment should focus there attention on more important issues
OMG where is America going? I live in Portugal (an european country) and I never heard of a mass-shooting. Why? Because here getting a weapon is almost impossible, with all the background checks, the fees you have to pay to have a license to bear a weapon and so on. I have never touched a weapon myself and I am 26 years old. As far as videogames are concerned there's almost no control whatsoever. So why do you refuse to see the truth? I think the problem is that americans are obsessed with weapons.
Yeah.... Forget about that little thing called the current economy in America. 1%ers really do need to focus on more interesting things, as that obviously is no concern for them...nor spending time seeking solutions to the real issues but grandstanding for reelection purposes to stay in that percentage ranking.
So, you play bloody and violent movies in prime time on every open TV channel for decades. You sell auto weapons on every corner shop, literally on every neighbourhood, to anyone with a ID card. And then your rulers tell you that videogames are to blame, not the shops, not the movies, not the laws. Games. And then, you wonder why the rest of the world says americans are dumb.
@TigusVidiksAutomatic weapons are not available in every corner store in every neighborhood in the United States. San Francisco is a major city with zero gun stores. It is true that Americans consume a lot of violent media, but not everything you hear about the US is true and very few things are true about the entire country.
Gun lobbys trying to divert the public opinion by blaming videogames. What is sad, is to see polititians who were supposed to have the best interest of the people, defending guns despite everything.
The Red neck of the year award winner Tennessee senator Lamar "Lame" Alexander:
"Gun don't kill people, game kill people!!!"
Seems like your amendment is is having some troubles there keeping your people save, kids killing kid with gun that got driven mad by violant computer games.
Sounds like you needs some advice:
Dont think the "to bare arms" amendment was made with 'fully automatic assault rifles in every home' in mind.
And Fucking with my games is breaking the second amendment you pig.
@Srg_Ducky dude, its the bill of rights. not the bill of fucking needs. who the hell cares if guns uses lasers/metal balls? it's my RIGHT and it shall not be infringed
These politician just do not learn....now it's real sad because all they want is attention because they feel neglected in the public's eye.
How about that latest tragedy where the 19 year old kills her brother with a gun accidentally while posing for a facebook profile picture? Is that simply poor gun control or do you blame video games for that too?
I love how easy it is for the National Rifle Association to call out video games when in a video game you're using "rifles"! And how could a game give someone false courage but things like music, with lyrics of men sometimes threatening to kill someone they have "beef" with, and movies not, where in a movie you can see a man take on an entire army by himself and that doesn't give people a "false sense of courage" . A video game is a virtual representation of something that is usually not possible and fake. Rated M games are technically for adults which are supposed to be able to handle themselves. Now that "one" man, one anomaly in a world where thousands die a day from guns, decided to shot up an elementary school people just have to point their greedy, naive pudgy fingers at my place of Zen, video games, which at there core are still basic . So let me conclude by exuberantly expressing my patriotic homage of the First Amendment by saying, CHOKE ON A BIG ONE NRA and you disgrace of a New Jerseyian Republican.
Gun violence, and school shootings both predate video games. So the real issue here is how uneducated our governments leaders are on the subject matter, and how quickly they will jump on a bandwagon with little to no knowledge just to keep in the lime light for the voters. Hmmm. Epic fail on the part of the politicians.
Wow. The NRA must really pay their stooges in DC well to spout off BS statements like that. And I just realized what "NRA" really stands for: No Responsibility Assumed.
I like how a famous incident happens where people can get attention and everyone thinks they're a psychologist.
well senators in this country are a bigger problem then guns and violence combined, but you dont see anyone doing anything about that in our lifetime do you?
@Armyboy5 You're a shining example of what the problem is. The failure of parents who keep raising idiots that refuse to grow up.
@rann89 @Armyboy5 you don't know anything about my parents's parenting. so keep it to yourself if you are an angry person with no sense of humor, and if you're going to insult someone then at least keep it clean and talk about your target, not his loved ones that you know nothing of
In all seriousness the reason I see for this happening is because of money, undeserved power and selfishness. They are trying to TAKE. simple as that
@rann89 @Armyboy5 Thats funny I didnt know losing your sense of humor was part of growing up. Must have forgotten that memo..
At what point can a politician start thinking for themselves? There is at this point no solid evidence of it leading to violence, so why say anything?
He's right though, after playing Ni No Kuni, i felt an overwhelming urge to grab the uzi and the 12 gauge and head into town.
What a freaking idiot.
It's disgusting how these coldhearted bastards use these horrible tragedies to increase their own popularity.
what an idoit. guns kill people, video games entertain people. yeah real problem people being entertained
This knee jerk reaction a great portion us gamers are having is appalling. When something opposes something we enjoy, we are quickly jumping on the defense. "Games aren't the problems, it's guns. This guy is an idiot." etc. etc. Let's do some assessing of our own arguments and not shift the blame. Games could very well be a factor. They are not, however, even close to the biggest factor. Also, blaming guns makes you no better than this man. Just like him, you make an invalid point that is not substantiated by any objective evidence. In turn, making yourself look as foolish as this man.
@Rjasper48 Great statement. I am quite appalled at some of the comments on here. Some of these comments are just terrible. While this man might be wrong about some things he has said, i do not wish on him or his family any of the things some of these people have said. Don't forget politicians are human beings too. No mater how full of hot air they are.
the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting will definitely not have happened if the shooter DIDN'T HAVE ACCESS TO GUNS.
Could anyone tell me if this guy is serious? SO VIDEO GAMES ARE WORSE THAN GUNS. 'facepalm'. I bet he was paid by the gun lobby to say this. Last i checked the mother took her children out for SHOOTING. Did his mum get influenced by video games.? Where do these people get their ideas from? Why don't we blame everything except the main problem? Did video games cause the gunman mental issues?
