im about seven hours in, came to the fishing and nearly put this strangely alluring RPG to bed, but thankfully my love for the genre and a lot of persistence i beached me a whale, i cracked the fishing and i can say i will be with this one to the end, really great so far..

Kevin VanOrd delivers scorpion claws and mutton meat in this video review for Nier.
I've never disagreed with Kevin more in my life. It's odd because our taste in games is eerily similar. His favorite games from 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011 were also my favorites. We both look for and admire the same elements, which is why I find this review so strange. Nier's storytelling, characters, dialogue, and music are simply incredible; some of the finest that the video game medium has ever known, and he seems reluctant to acknowledge any of that. Even while praising the music he felt the need to insert a little jab towards it by calling it "overbearing". I don't know, maybe he was just in a bad mood while playing the game or writing the review.
This review is garbage. couple dozen hours to get to the last 5 hours? obviously if it takes the reviewer that long to get the last 5 hours he needs to be playing something else. play it on hard? Considering the user score is 2 above gamespots maybe they should actually pay attention to the story.
@Sou1gambler Lol. User scores are generally high as hell, even if critics hate it. User scores don't mean anything. It's either inflated by die hard fans who give it 10/10 or people who hate it and give it 1/10.
I usually despise JRPGS, always the same 15 years old boy wanting to save the world sh*t, but Nier is different. The story is well written, this is the first time I actually care for the main characters in a JRPG game. I agree that the gameplay is too easy, but its still fun and the magics looks cool. This game has so much potentials, I really hope Cavia will make a sequel.
I had never even heard of this game before! Wonder what other games I missed that could have been potentially good.
grrrrrr, every time i listen this stupid review i get mad! how can someone like u review games? the story is not great? yeah right........ the characters arent great? yeah right.... you dont know crap about originality!!!!!
Did anyone read Kaine's back-story after you complete the game? It explains a lot about her character. Don't judge her until you read it.
I just picked this game up since it was only 9.99... I am looking forward to it since the games that have been coming out don't peak my interest. I hope this game is good, it seems good, I just look at reviews to see what I would like about the game and so far so good!
I really wanted to like this game. The soundtrack was great, although way to repetitive, but the combat was just so boring! Maybe it was because I played it on hard mode but the bosses seemed to have and absolutely endless health bar. And its not like it was hard, just time consuming. OH and the fishing minigame was awful.
Kevin, I like your reviews, but this one is the worst you've ever written. 1. The "endless fetch quests" are optional. 2.The battle system is okay, bit repetitive, but at least there IS variety. 3.The story is not bad ! And the characters are great..., no, more than great, they are fantastic, they are original, they are emotional. 4.Nier is ugly, that's why i like him. He is one of my favourite main characters. 5.The game is different and kinda strange (weird) at first, and hell, that's what i really like in the game. 6.The soundtrack... No comment. I'll just say that you won't find something like that in any other game for the Xbox 360. 7.On "normal" setting, the game gives you some challenge.
@maxermaximus: What, were you playing on Xbox or something? Dragon Age Origins looks awesome on PC so I dunno what you're smoking.
It's funny that Dragon Age Origin has bad graphics and no reviewers seemed to mind, but they notice with this game.
Is it me, or is Gamespot incredibly biased against the RPG genre? They actually had the nerve to give Suikoden II a 7.5.
and THIS is why I dont rely on GS reviews, only for news and updates. This dude sounded like a 7 year old with sandy ice cream. If the game was SO easy, then dont play on EASY. The game actually has a decent challenge on medium mode. Fetch quests? DONT DO THEM. geezus.
I haven't seen this much complaining about a review since Tools of Destruction got a 7.5. It's just one guy's opinion. If you like the game, good for you. Not everybody can like the same thing.
I never had any question with the reviewer... But this one... I have to disagree... He just overlook so many things.. Play it half heartedly and slams it a 5.0... Alright even its not the case, the review is way~ too bias... I mean.. Yea, he is ugly, not a true hero as per se, the colour is bland, and there are many tedious fetch quest ... But, that does not make it a bad game... The side quest has very interesting story about the people and although it has repetitive fights, however, the gameplay is great in some ways.. Its simple but fun...Besides, there are subtle emotions in the characters, and something more human. This is something that we seldom get in games these days which is too straight forward. All the emotions we see are normally either sad, happy or angry.. On top of it, the story is not like what you see it.. There are so many morale in it that make it epic... So, this game deserve atleast a 7.0 and I thought GS reviews are somewhat more reliable.. But, seems like I misplace my trust...
Great game. I'm really glad I picked this up last week for only $12.99. Unforgetable sountrack and great story. It is very bizarre but in a good way. I would say it's like a grown folks Zelda. The last game that I enjoyed this much and also got bashed in the reviews was Azurik. I wasn't even aware of gaming review sites back then. Kinda wish I would have never began to dictate my gaming purchases because of these editorial reviews. I wonder what else is hiding in the bargain bin that will sadly never see the light of a sequal.
The womans outfit is a huge minus, makes it all look so....stupid and childish. something a horny 16 year old would find great.
that hot girl, I must play this game once for all yeeee this game deserves 7.5 *-* hot girl holy &%$&
I love large environments...And come on, look at FFX; you got a lot of that. I like it. It looks like my sort of game, if you ask me. I'm 100% honest. This looks totally like my sort of game; I don't like most of the stuff most people play. I want it!!!
You aren't forced to do quests.. what an partial review.. the first thing a viewer comes to think of this game when he/she sees this review, is that it's incredibly tedious.. which is not true.. sure the beginning of the game may be a bit slow.. but the pace fastens up later.. I shall write a proper rieview for this game.. which I have played for long and actually appreciate it..
He didn't even cover if there are any differences between the PS3 and 360 versions, or if they're exactly the same.
Nier deserves at LEAST a 7.. Giving it a 5 is pretty stupid, and just shows that the reviewer's interests lie more with mainstream crap than anything else.. Probably played it on Easy mode too.. lol ;)
i finished this game so now i can finally watch videos/reviews related to it. i'm surprised i agree with kevin on a lot of things...maybe he's an alright guy after all lol
At long last I have tried this game (I got it for $10 brand new) and I take it all back. It is a 5. Sorry Kevin
Oops I was looking at the wrong one! Amazon says that Xbox 360's version is STILL 49.99! :(
@madkrips: thanks so much, I just saw that I had a message in my gamespot email, I see that it still is 29.98 on Amazon. :)
@Seraphim9 It's less than $30 on amazon now, actually pushed it's way into the top 10. I don't know how long it will stay there tho, hopefully if you want it you see this message before it jumps back up.
My god this review is biting, I say make your own conclusions about what you think this game will be like and ignore Kevin's bitterness.
This game looks really good but is still a little overpriced for me (even used on Amazon) so I'll wait for a price drop..regarding scathing reviews, I listen to them but take them with a grain of salt and make my own judgments on how the game(s) will be.
Amazing story, Amazing music, Fun Combat. That alone makes the game really fun. The "endless fetch quests" Are endlessly optional and you can completely ignore them and just play the main story which is really fun. This game deserves an 8 easy.
In the beginning of the review it says the game is for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC although it's not available for the PC.
"Filled with endless fetch quests" 1. UH HELLO, THAT'S AN RPG FOR YOU.. why are you even reviewing a game when you clearly don't like the genre? 2. You don't have to accept the quests...
I can't believe this got a 5 but Drakengard 1 & 2 got 7s. This game was something special in a world where people don't really take chances with games anymore.
I'm 10 hours in and while the fetch quests get a little boring, fishing is quite fun and my only complaint is the jumping, but that is minor. Otherwise a really good game, IMO.
yeah, the music for this game is amazing. Even though the game isn't up to par, the soundtrack is amongst the best you will ever find for a game.
Eh..i'm not sure...i may like this game...i'll have to wait for a price drop i suppose...
