How can I become a GameSpot moderator?

This is a friendly message from GameSpot Staff. Please read the following guidelines:

- READ the rules for this board. Users create thread topics and the moderators respond to users. Do NOT respond to another user's thread topic.
- DESIRE TO BE A MOD? Read this thread ; monitor the way mods treat other users; be excellent to each other!
- CANNOT POST TO A GAME BOARD? Read this thread.

Note: GameSpot Staff do read this board. Yes, we made this entire message just for you. Please be respectful to your fellow volunteer moderators in your inquiries about being moderated. In return you'll receive the same treatment. Overlooking this message will cause a staff member to bring out the suspension stick... and this is no joke. Let's not forget a final tip for users who flame or troll - report the abuse and ignore the message from the user. You can always vent by playing a shooter or puzzle game; in return you'll enjoy having your community privileges.

How do I become a moderator?

Moderator drafts occur anywhere between once and three times a year. It varies on what the demand for new moderators is. Whenever we feel we need more mods, the community manager, Jody Robinson --along with the current moderators-- will sift through all the people who have expressed interest for the position. Additionally, the current mods and GameSpot staff will make further nominations from those we feel are leaders and otherwise positive influences in our community. From the applications we have received as well as from our own nominations, we will compile a list of potentials. All the moderators will then voice their opinion on each candidate, and we ultimately debate and finally vote on the new mods. After we have a list of finalists, the administrators will then check up on prior post history, moderations, etc. to be sure that person is fit for the job. Once the mods and admins give someone the 'thumbs up', they are contacted and asked to come aboard. If they agree to uphold our rules and want to join up, they are then given the moderation title and license on the boards. We typically draft moderators in a group from 5 to 15 rather than on an individual basis.

Users who become moderators are those who follow the rules carefully while actively engaging the community. In essence, they're users who make GameSpot a better website!

The most recent moderation draft concluded April 2009. We do not schedule or announce future drafts, and you will only know of one once it has finished.

The best thing for someone interested in being a mod to do is to make themselves known. Send an email in to community@gamespot.com to get put in the file of potentials, then just be a positive influence on the boards to get yourself noticed. We pick experienced, level-headed contributors. GameSpot Plus or Total Access is not a requirement or prerequisite to becoming a moderator. There is no predetermined minimum level or post count you must attain before becoming a moderator. Being a moderator is not a privilege to be earned with tenure alone.

The position is on a volunteer basis, but you will get GameSpot Total Access for free!

You most likely will *NOT* receive a reply from Jody regarding your interest in being a moderator. She is the manager of the GameSpot community and is our liason for the GameFAQs community and thus is quite busy. Every member who emails the above address expressing interest gets put in the list of potentials. Moderation drafts are not scheduled, so they can occur at any time. Every person on the potentials list has a chance at becoming a moderator, because the moderators and admins vote and comment on each member. There's no 'secret tribunal' or anything. We pick good, level-headed contributors to this community to take this position. Upon your being chosen during the moderation draft, you will be notified and offered the position.
