a few days ago my xbox360 got the red ring and i downloaded a guide on how to fix it, so i opened my xbox (only up to the shell as i dont have any torx 10 screwdrivers) until i did more researh and found out that warrany was extended from 1 year to 3 years and i got my xbox in 2006 so now half my warranty sticker has been removed but the other half is perfect. so my question is this will microsoft still replace or repair my xbox360 for free?

- Apr 25, 2008 10:27 pm PTOnce you crack her open that's it. Unless you are a great sweet-talker you'll have to pay. Get the screwdrivers (I used 8 and 10 torx) and if you are using the eraser method - swap them for modelling clay that you shape, then bake. It doesn't crack under the heat like the (7) types of eraser I went through. The clay works a charm. Haven't had a problem for nearly a year now.

EDIT- I forgot to mention in my previous post, but there are some genres that I actually do find unnecessary. These are when people add The Country of origin or Race to the genre. Eg Aussie Hip Hop or Black metal.

Self owned for trying to fix it yourself.
But I'll expand. Trying to fix it yourself, I'm pretty sure anyway, voids your warranty. You can either try to fix it yourself, fail and have to send it off anyway, then get a bill for $150 or something. Or you can send it off in the first place and not have to pay anything for them to repair it. Or you can actually fix it yourself, but you shouldn't, unless you have a degree in something like that.- Please wait. Quick reply will be available shortly.

Colouring the bottom with a silver marker and showing it to them can be risky, because they might sue you for trying to cheat them (Who knows, they're from Microsoft). Best thing now is to get it to them and then get a huge bill, unfortunately for you your warranty expires once you open it. Call them and ask them if there is something you can do about it.

- Don't try to fix it unless you know what your doing! Even then its better not to try it yourself since if you make it worse then who says MS will give do anything to help you? Opening it voids the warranty. Why would anyone try to fix it themselves?

I got the rings two weeks after my warranty ran out, and before MS announced the extended warranty. Was quite peeved - and hooked big time on Texas Hold 'Em - so decided to stick it to the man and try fix it myself rather than fork out more of the hard earned and wait for who knows how long.
Found the site with the South American guy using erasers to absorb the heat and stop the motherboard from flexing. It worked, but only for about a week each time (opened and applied different erasers seven times). The erasers would crack and fall apart. The better half suggested using the clay which can withstand the high temps no prob.
Close to a year on now - all good.

- Apr 26, 2008 9:18 am PTI suppose in your circumstances I would have done the same thing, but now with the 3 year warranty against it you shouldn't do it unless you're 100% sure it will work, and not screw anything else up.

Most complicated thing I've fixed before my baby was a flat tyre. The clay fix works and it ain't no rocket science - takes less than an hour. Save your "advice"...it's laughable.

maybe you guys will listen to my advice. before you try open up the xbox and fix it yourself somehow by following the methods of some dodgy american blogger, consequently breaking the sticker and rendering your warrenty void, maybe you should think about sending in to microsoft where the things are actually made and getting it fixed for free...
..works a charm ;)
