John Davison shares the highs and lows of Sony's new handheld, the PS Vita. Will you buy one at launch?
I hope they don't make different versions of the PS Vita like the PSP 1000-3000 .
I don't think I'll have enough money to spend of 3 different PS Vitas
its too pricey (console, memory card and games) especially with all the alternative gadgets(ipad, smartphones, nintendo ds) around. psp does not have a selling edge, something which no one else currently has. If i was to spend all this money, id rather buy something else, even if i have to pay a little extra.
I bought one, and PS Vita is a very good device. However, I have to agree with the video, it's expensive. If it was $99 and box games were $9.99 this thing would be flying off the shelves and game sales would be through the roof.
i have to say i love the screen on psv, but its size is one of the worst things about it. with a case its a pain to keep in your pants pocket
To be fair you can not compare a 99 cent cell phone game to a 39.99 psp vita game. A 99 cent cellphone game obviously won't be anywhere near the same quality of a full psp vita game.As the saying goes "you get what you pay for". If you pay 99 cent for a cellphone game don't expect loads of content and a quality game. Why they would make such a pointless comparison is beyond me.
@mwjohnson5 his point was that a cheap mobile game was ported to this thing and the price increased by $33. he isn't comparing all vita games to mobile but ports that have their priced increased 3x is ridiculous. the 3DS is only better because the price is low enough that you can get a few games and the system for the price of the vita. and it supports real SD cards.
I think the price will drop but beyond that nothing will change because sony is full of stubern, headstrong refusing jerk faces who only answer to whether their wallets are currently the size of steamer trunks rather than the less favorable suit case.
He read my mind as soon as he showed the smartphones. I WANT F*CKING D-PADS!!! I WANT METAL GEAR SOLID!
Interesting video. I'd like to add a comment to the pricing issue. I'm not a game developer but working in the film vfx industry I have a few friends who work in the game industry and share the same tedious work hours. Bottom line, quality doesn't come cheap and although there are games like Angry Birds that cost a mere fiver, it takes way too many artists, programmers and designers years of work to get a AAA title out. Even at $60 I find it unfair to all the dedication, work and broken relationships endured in order to get that game disk out. People forget that it's not the disk/cartridge/manual they're paying for but the content. I don't mind having flexible pricing depending on the development time but comparing AAA titles to phone/tablet titles is a bit rough. We should be shooting for quality not quantity. Besides what's $60 worth these days? It can't pay for a night in a shady hotel.
@Henrique2324 What you said its true, and i understand what you mean. I had a master system when there were people with Nintendo 64. But there is no point in crying, what you must do is cool your head, that is what im saying. If you will be able to buy the PS Vita sooner or later you should be happy. Btw, our conversation is getting personal, maybe we should send private messages instead of commenting here? :P
I don't think piracy is that big of a deal for the PSP the DS and the PS2 were also hacked and they are the two best selling consoles in the world. If you ask me the biggest problem i the price of the games for the VITA and 3DS against the smartphones and tablets.
Well this was a surprisingly good video, taking into consideration how much gs has been whining about the vita...
Aaaagh! I deffinetly want one, but I think Sony's shooting itself in the foot - again, with the high game prices and crazy-high mem card prices.
Well glaceya, actually u can't comare the Vita to a console... Portable consoles don't combat against home consoles. You won't get something better than it for a long time I think. You can only compare it with the 3DS and the old PSP Vita (there's nothing much more out there other than those). Unless u think Icrap (Iphone, Ipad, Iwhatever) is a gaming console. Well I can't play on my mobile phone, it has the worst controls ever made on this planet just a touch screen and it sucks all your battery needed for.... I guess making calls. ps: On Vita... I can play pretty well.
I'm currently getting one and I am praying to the all mighty Zeus that Bethesda makes an Elder Scrolls or a Fallout for the system. That would be a true dream....
The vita is quite impressive, but I would not get rid of my tablet for it. I think you'd have to compare it to ps3 or 360, and Im not gettin rid of my 360 anytime soon. Not vital enough of a mobile gadget to replace a phone or tablet and not enuf of a gaming machine to justify replacing ur console. The vita is nice but in this crowded world of gadgets and gaming it will definitely have to fight for its market share.
I agree with Goddess_s. If you are a Core or Hardcore Gamer then this a gamer dreamer. This is not for casual players. I am going to town before work tomorrow to get a Wi-Fi Ps Vita and have no doubts. However, the memory is expensive (I got 32GB) and this overall will be a expensive purchase.
i hope its supported, but sony doesn't have the best track record. technologically its there. cant wait for ffx hd. This is the first launch system i will purchase that i wont put up on ebay.
It sure is, however why only 3-4hours battery and cant exchange them... And Why a Mobile phone graphic card SONNY? Why not a ATI\NVIDIA top secret graphic card instead? It has good graphics, but still not the same as u get in the PS3, and they could have used a better graphic card, special because it will probably lose all of it's graphical magic this year; by what? By just a mobile crap phone, that sucks. ps: Soon mobile phones will have a better graphic cards, and that's sad. However who can play in a mobile phone haha I can't!
@OldKye When I am telling you I make $300 a week that does not include my car, gas, education (which is monthly), and books. With all that taken off I have about $150 maybe a bit more left from my paycheck. Plus everytime I have a chance to make some extra cash I do whatever it is that needs to be done. I am a person who loves money and I work hard to make it.
I preordered a Vita, it is in the mail, mainly it's just a neat piece of technology that I really want to check out. I am not buying $40 games for it, that's just not happening, I'll buy Super Stardust for now. I purchased an Android tablet (Iconia A500) and it turns out I never use it (alarm clock). I just bring my laptop if I want to putz with some games somewhere, or my Android phone is almost as functional and always there. I hope this Vita doesn't turn into another alarm clock, but it looks really awesome. I would love if some of the major PS2 games I loved as a kid were released on this, that alone would satisfy me.
I think the Vita definately has great potential but I'm not gonna buy it on release, I'm gonna wait a year or so when I can get it for a good price and have plenty of games to play on it. I think consumers are getting smarter when it comes to release dates and waits so they can get it cheaper and possibly a new version. I usually wait for games a month or two when I can get it for half price.
So conclusion, for those of you who are completely content with games such as Angry birds, Don't buy it.. it's much too expensive for your needs and for the same price you'll get much more bang for your bucks(apps and memory and loads of cheap games) with iPods .. but for those like me who are in it for the gaming experience, that NEED the graphic quality and the feel of a controller in your hands.. you won't find any better hand helds on the market... it's totally worth it! K
Alright so I've had the Vita for a few days now and I have to say: Yes the memory sticks are waaaay too expensive, but when it comes to the games and the actual console, um, I'm paying 40$ for games that would cost 50-60+ on my computer with pretty much the same (or very close to) graphics (at that size, you can barely tell the difference). Like some have said before, this isn't an 'Angry bird' playing device, this is a Console, to play REAL games so of course the prices will be raised to fit accordingly with the experience. It's a little awkward to try to use all the controls at once (front pad, rear pad, joysticks) but thankfully, you often don't have to. You choose which you prefer, so no big deal. When you DO have to use the touch screens, it often makes sense to with the game you're playing. I've never seen a screen so brightly lit and so sharp, so no complaints there either. And the only crashes or oddities I've suffered where when I removed my memory card while the device was on sleep mode (so I learnt not to do that, apparently that's a bad thing lol). Other then that it runs smoothly and apart from a bit of a long wait to start up games, switching application is super rapid... If only there were applications.. nothing so far, just games and movies(downer here).
@AlexF_AT I Agree with you when we talk about the system price, $250 is a good price, considering the price of an Ipad which is a totaly useless thing, and it costs $600 on its cheapiest version, and still it sells a lot. But the games prices are extremelly high, $50 - $40 dollars on a portable game is expensive. I understand at some point, you can't compare the amount of money companies spend to make a Handheld game with Angry Birds. Uncharted is way more expensive. So it's obvious that they must be more expensive. But they don't need to put it as expensive as a console game, it's too much. And one thing that they said I noticed only by watching the games before the release. They want to put every kind of control Vita offers, without needing it. For me it's stupid to use Touch Screen on Marvel vs Capcom for example. I just hope they fix Vita's problens, because it really looks promissing to me.
@Mr_BillGates No kidding right? I feel like if Apple wanted to focus on taking over ANY industry, they would be successful. They really do what is fundamental to great products: invention, finding something that people use or need, and making it better. They have already taken over the mobile games market, next is iTV and destroying Comcast. Once that happens, and you have a TV able to handle games out of the box, you'll see them take aim at SONY and MSoft.
This would be a lot nicer if there were a way I could play my old PS2 games on it. I would love to play my ps2 games on the go.
what an awesome, yet horribly timed piece of hardware. The only people that are going to buy this: 15 - 35 yr old first adopters that need to play CoD anywhere they go. 8-15 year old kids with parents that spend all kind of cash just to keep Jr from whining. Other people have consoles, 3DS and smartphones.
iOS devices are leading the way, and it isn't even serious about gaming right now. Now imagine if Apple focuses on it. Nintendo/Sony will be dead asap.
right now, the 3DS is much more appealing. I know its been out quite a bit longer, but it has a more attractive price point, as well as a stronger software lineup (which didnt happen at launch, either, but still..). I think Vita's potential is amazing, but it remains to be seen if they can capitalize with the games.
I dont understand why people complain about the price it is literally a handheld ps3. Now I have a huge gripe about the damn memory!
I'm definitely interested. I loved my PSP, but I'm gonna wait to see how things go and if developers are gonna make good games for it. The launch lineup is exciting, but what's around the corner...?
I am not paying that much for a damn memory card - End of. It should be bundled with the device, especially as it is a requirement to actually use the Vita to play games. At the very least the vita should have enough on board memory to play a game. If it wasn't for that I would have no problem buying it on day 1. The blatant greed sickens me.
For those of you dissing the Vita cause of the prices your obviously not a true gamer. Yes it is a bit over the top with prices most definitely but it's what you pay for the experience. This is for the people who enjoy their hardcore games like Uncharted. This is for those people who enjoy Call of Duty & Assassins Creed who care about the experience they immerse themselves in to escape life. Gamers aren't gonna buy this for angry birds! We are buying it for real games with REAL controls as well as the touch screen thrown in! If Gamers wanted cheap apps for slight entertainment we will go buy ourselves an ipod. It does have its downs, but overall as a gamer I would want this over an ipod anyday. Handhelds FTW!
I have a 3DS and a Vita, and the Vita destroys the 3DS. There really isn't a reason to keep my 3DS anymore.
I'm looking forward to the Vita, but like others have said, I'm not certain whether I will buy it on Day 1. My only question now is, why are people constantly complaining over the $40 game price point? Has everybody forgotten that most 3DS games cost about the same? In fact, Resident Evil Revelations was going to cost $50, but right before release Capcom lowered the price. I'm just not certain why people do not make the connection that 3DS and Vita game prices are largely the same.
Here is my little chain of thought about the Vita I absolutely loved my PSP PSVita is the PSP's successor So, I should absolutely love the damn thing Despite the poor battery life, cause I'm already used to it with my PSP, also, it runs UMVC3 on the go, which I`m very addicted to, right now Day one purchase for me, don't know about you (ok, not day one, but accept it, bundles are crap)
