Is this gameplay footage vanilla? Because I was never able to get it to look that good, even maxing out the graphics.
@Maverick6575 the X-Ray engine powering the game was made way back, from 2001-03, with tweaks added over all the years of delays, so that's why it looks so dated.
my first impression is this kind of looks like Fallout 3. I'm playing this game right now, certainly looks promising
@PetJel i think we'll see another STALKER game someday. Probably on the next Xbox, PS4 and pc.
One of the best RPS out there, rich environment and a lot of play time granted especially if you are a scavenger :)

You can get quite a lot of mods out there such as the STALKER:Complete mod which gives SHOC the graphics you would expect from a new game. This game is truly beautiful when played with superb visuals and no interuptions from bugs.
Anything involving apocalyptic worlds with freedom to explore is something I look out for most. Looks a good game despite the dated visuals.
This is the game I'll remember until my last breath. I love post apocalyptic books, movies and games but this was truly amazing experience.
3 Like graphics don't have to be state of the art to look good... he says the engine is dated, but the attention to detail, lighting, and atmosphere are fantastic.
1 Like I cannot get over the: "The graphics engine is dated somewhat at this point" followed by "you can just stand there and look at the sights". They can't both be right, can they?!
i need a link for a mod that will let me join other factions i downloaded abc mod thing but the readme ting doesent really help its somting about the gamedata i dont know how to extract :/
I've just begun playing again and the atmosphere still holds up! This game has scared me several times, you can get it for pretty cheap so pick it up!
@Darth Quanstars Well, I have the complete mod, and I have Windows Vista 64 bit. It has not crashed once, yay! Sometimes it lags, but it could just be my PC.
1 Like Why 8.5? this should of gotten 9.5 or 10! "Right up there with Deus Ex" well why not put the score up there. I am guesssing GSC couldn't afford the 10 payoff.... as this review was done in 2007 . remember that controversial year. Seriously If you havent' played this game yet, what are you waiting for? This and it's 2 sequels are the best FPS/RPG/Horror Hybrids every created! GSC needs more credit! I love S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
"It rates up there with Dues Ex", "Graphics are a bit dated.....Graphics are so detailed you can stop for a while to soak it all in". "You just want to come back to the game". Non logical phrases in places and a score that doesn't match the quotes... What were Gamespot playing at with PC game reviews those days - and nowadays!
Just got it, and so far it's really good. A lot of fun and the quest structure/open world makes it a lot more satisfying than a normal shooter. Runs well to. I only have a 7600 GT and its still playable if I max out everything but lighting and antialiasing.
@jakcul The mod is called Stalker Complete 2009 and you can find it at http://www.moddb.com/mods/stalker-complete-2009/ You'll need a pretty modern PC to play it at a decent framerate because of the HQ texture replacements though. So you might want to grab another mod pack instead. I've heard good things about the L.U.R.K. mod found on the same website.
@mrklorox I just bought it for 2 bucks off steam, but what mod are you talking about and where can I get it? Sorry if I sound dumb, havent played PC games since Counter Strike back in 2003 or so. Im a bit out of the loop.
You guys buying it today should get the STALKER Complete 2009 mod from moddb. It fixes almost all the bugs and makes the game prettier and more atmospheric than ever.
Yeah I never really liked dark games unless they are stealth based, but for $2 on Steam I figured I could not pass it up.
like everyone else bought it for like 5 bucks on steam. its a great atmospheric world and it has a nice mission base system going on but im finding using weapons horrible. they are so innacurate and your heatlh drains so quickly. im finding it hard to continue forward and its only on the stalker difficulty. (around medium). would someone tell me if its just me or what cos it ruins the gameplay for me.

For those who just bought it on Steam (like me) I've heard we should also be downloading the Stalker Complete 2009 mod collection which brings the graphics into the modern era.

I just bought this game on Steam about 15 minutes ago. I hope it's as good as this review says it is. If not, I only paid $5 for it so I don't mind.
