These days it's easy to spot the role-playing influences in just about any type of game. Things like stats, leveling up, and inventory management apply to everything from action adventure to sports games. But true role-playing games have more than that. An engaging story, richly developed world, strong cast of characters, and well-designed gameplay mechanics are all hallmarks of truly great role-playing games. The following five games have all of those things and more, and that's why they are nominated for the award of best role-playing game of 2006.
