Played kotor 1 and 2, multiple times. Multiple times.
Didn't play SW:TOR once, and won't even now that it's free to play. The truth is that mmo games are shallow and grindy, once you've played one mmo you've essentially played them all. All mmo are, are grinds. Hell, even GW2 felt shallow because there's no connection to any characters, and once you beat your main story those characters have no reason to even talk to you anymore. If I have no connection to other characters or the story in a MMO that is grindy (they all are) then what's the point paying 2 play or grinding hundreds of hours when you could simply play a FPS instead. Games like Mass effect and kotor 1-2 had me emotionally invested in the game and nothing of what you're doing felt like a grind. It's the exact opposite for MMO's.
Once you play one or two mmo's and invest a lot of time into them, you never go back for more, which is probably why a lot of them end up failing or going F2P because the gaming population has already experienced it and after a while it's not fun, its simply a shallow grind. WoW hit the market at the absolute perfect opportunity. Nothing like that will ever happen again for another mmo, it's a sad reality.
Is SW:TOR Worth Playing if you Hate MMOs?

GameSpot AU's self-professed KOTOR lover and MMO hater Jessica McDonell dives into The Old Republic to see whether it's a worthwhile substitute for KOTOR 3.
Played kotor 1 and 2, multiple times. Multiple times.
Great review Jess. I definitely agree with most of the points you mentioned, cause i'm also a Single Player rpg lover & was pleasantly surprised to see what looked like 8 full character driven stories incredibly fleshed out & voice acted especially since it was an mmo.
I still say at some point Bioware need to compile this, burn it to a disc or distribute it digitally as a standalone title; of course with some modifications. Sadly however, with the way the industry is I doubt it will happen.
But anyway, again, great review
If you haven't tried SWTOR, you should. You will always have to pay fees for an MMO. Free to Play isn't actually free. You get minimum options in the game and can't do anything close to the subscribed players. In any case. I played SWTOR back when it came out, eventually going broke and was not able to play anymore. Just started up about a month ago and it looks like they have merged, or gave the option, a lot of servers to a few servers. Making the populations much more vast. I am only have 30 and I am liking it far more than I did the first time around. Even if you don't want to pay for a monthly fee, SWTOR will be Free to Play this Fall. You'll be able to level to 50 at your own pace with no fees for anything. Once 50, You can choose to fully unlock everything and pay a monthly fee, or just keep playing with the restrictions on your account. Either way, it's a good deal for everyone.
MMO's suck! I like to be THE HERO, to save the world to get all the glory. Not share it with some 10 000 more others on a server. Single play forever!
Also, I heard that Lucas Arts did their best to destroy the story in this game, just like they did in KOTOR 2 and dont forget how LA destroyed Battlefront 3. Conclusion Lucas hates it when someone makes a better Star Wars story than him.
Yo that computer looks awesome, I need that monitor. Also, this game is pretty good, just got a lot of static because people wanted it to launch with all the features of an MMO thats been out for 7 years or so. I hope the character xfer service helps this game improve.
This is all i have to say.... 04.26.2012 Award-Winning MMO from BioWare and LucasArts Launches in 38 New Countries Today..
People who complain about monthly fees for an ONLINE game and service should really find something better to do with their time, like cuddling with a cheese grater. The fact is that MMOs have Massive Monthly Overhead because they are allowing millions of REAL PEOPLE to interact and play games TOGETHER, not to mention the fact that they are constantly adding new content, so they have to pay all their employees, that's why they charge a monthly fee. If you don't like it, don't play it, don't pay it. But there is no reason or need to BASH it, as if it's an evil thing. Personally I can take or leave most MMOs and I love this one only because it is Star Wars. I was devastated @ the end of Mass Effect 3 and SWTOR goes a little way toward making me less angry with BioWare in general. Seeing the conversation options that can affect your Renegade or Paragon (I mean: light or dark side Jedi alignment) was a nice addition to an MMO, but doesn't make it the best one in the world. I will be playing this one a lot more to see what else it has to offer, but I find it interesting at the very least and it didn't make me want to quit in the first five minutes like Rift did.I think this game is actually a pretty successful blend of the Mass Effect pay style with the WoW play style so I don't have many complaints. RE: The video on this page, I thought that it was noteworthy that Jessica doesn't mention ANYTHING AT ALL about the MULTIPLAYER aspects of SWTOR, and neither has anyone else for that matter. After all, isn't that what is supposed to be so great about MMOs in the first place? So, let's all stop whining about the fact that this is not KOTOR 3 and start giving it the un-biased attention it deserves. It has some great points and some lousy ones, just like any other game. I would say, if you love the Star Wars universe, you'll probably get a kick out of this game, but I would strongly suggest you find some friends to play it with quickly because the solo experience does feel, as Jessica said, rather hollow at points. But that is, to my way of thinking, OK because it is a MULTIPLAYER game, not a single player game. That's why it has a monthly fee and that's why you shouldn't TRY to play it solo. End of line.
@ Lostinthebliss: Ditto, except it's my shortage of plasma that has kept me from being a PC guy in the first place (although if we keep seeing $400+ consoles, I may as well just bite the bullet and go PC after all).
I've heard from my brother this isn't the best game out there and since we have a similiar taste in games to an extent I consider his opinion more than most reviews since I do not watch/read reviews especially from gamespot
Kotor 3 should be the game we should be playing instead of this WoW - LOTR clone, with different make up that is.
LeadnSteel took the words right out of my mouth. I played UO for 6 years from launch and I have played every MMO since, including 2 years of EQ/EQ2 and WoW. TOR is easily the best MMO ever released. I sit at work thinking about playing it and when I get home I play it until I go AAK. Call me a fanboi if you like, but Bioware have done it again. All the best parts of Dragon Age, Mass Effect and Star Wars turned into a lovingly crafted MMO of awesome quality. I will be playing this for a long time.
i'm enjoying The Old Republic more than any MMO's I've played(Age of Conan, WoW, Rift) cause it's more story driven. I still would have liked to have seen another Kotor but I'll keep playing this.
People only hate because others are having more fun then they are .So keep crying, I love seeing all the tears because mommy and daddy wont buy it for you. Anyways most of you are probably just a bunch of baddies so no one cares.
SWToR isnt a bad game, I heard ppl say "SWtOR is SWKotOR3 x 10" and I feel this to be true, I got in the beta event so I did play the game. the only thing is the monthly fee, so called membership, it just feel so wrong from every angle I look at it. and thats the reason I choose to wait for GW2 over playing SWTOR.
Cute, but I'm still not down to pay for a game that I already pay for once. 99% of MMO's are cut... and Maplestory... *shudder* nvm.
pay to play? Free to play 'till level x? Pay real money for ingame stuff (be it instances, items or gold)? I say NO to all this crap. I'm pretty sure you won't take my word for it, every gamer needs to learn this the hard way. But you will.
Sorry, there are games out there with exciting combat, interesting environments and witty dialog options not to mention huge customization that are not pay to play. I will pass. Once more.
Im gonna chime in with my 2 cents about this fiasco. Im a huge PC guy. Though oddly enough i cant afford to play Pc's any longer because Im a poor white guy who doesn't have anymore plasma to donate. But growing up Ive ALWAYS enjoyed my single player experience. I Enjoy the idea of immersing myself in my own world and becoming the characters ( even in my mind ) and that this is the story IM in. IM in control. IM experiencing the This interactive book / story on how I want it to play out. I remember when everquest first came out and some buddies invited me over to see the game and That's when i first became unexcited about MMO's. I want the experience for my own. I don't want to quest with others and fight along side them. In fact i want to use my NPC's as fodder to protect ME the character or allow me time to get away. I played KOTOR and loved the experience in becoming my own character and personally when KOTOR 3, became star wars with other people. Blah. I was over it. In fact, I may just be a MMO hater. No. you know what. I am. I want to play the game for my own experience. I don't go to a movie to pay $25 to experience it with other people. I want to enjoy it for myself. So long story short. what does this have to do with this? probably nothing. But as long as there are those of us who don't want to play with you. There will always be those of us who want kotor 3 single player without MMO experience. you see nothing....move along.
i always ask this question do i have to pay a monthly fee? if the answer is yes, i automatically say no. pretty simple sht for me to make choices about. I will never support Sub fees for any reason regardless of how good it is. People getting behind MMOs have given EA and Activision the idea that charging for Call Of Duty and Battlefield is a great idea (dont think for 1 second EA isnt thinking about charging a monthly fee for Battlefield if COD Elite is successful)...one day i might even have to pay for Counter Strike, that almost makes me scream at th ethought of it. So im not supporting it. But thx anyway.
GS making another video/article defending another game that disappointed. I am beginning to think GS is now on EA's payroll.
I think SWTOR would have been alot better (in terms of lvling) if you didnt have to do the same side quests to keep up with the main quest. I think i would still be playing SWTOR if i can focus sololy on the main story then the rest. However, this is not the case. SWTOR is a grindfest till to next main story mission, which is it's flaw.
The problem with SWTOR is its a better single-player RPG then a MMO. Once you finish your personal story, the game gets boring quick.
@Albaficas That's true but the sad thing is Tera is going to be pay to play. They wouldn't let me into the beta as well so I can't test it yet to know if I want it or if it will be worth pay to play. Some devs just don't deserve their money but ironically I would pay to play GW2 and it's going to be free!
@Kevin1985_basic: Well, considering it's an MMO... I don't think you have to worry about a definite ending :p TOR is just a standard EQ/WoW/whatever style MMO with a Bioware single player overlay on the typical quest system. The story-driven part is pretty good, I have to say, and while you're leveling, this is the part of the game you're playing the most. Also without a doubt, at least the beginning of the Sith force user characters' story is crazy cool. But the MMO aspects, and the concessions required by the story-driven part to support an MMO, are terribly uninteresting, derivative, and grindy. For me, it's just not worth it. If ONLY they had taken all the voice acting and plots from the story-driven parts and made a single player game...
I just wonder how many gold sellers are they going to be in those two games [ diablo 3, gw2 ] because of the 'yea its ok to sell in game items for real money' as the devs have stated. Anyone have a number on hand thats in the beta ?
is it just me, or does Bopper from Amazing Race look just like the Jedi guy on the cover of Old Republic? :)
@BornGamer, Absolutely my own script =] @Shadyhype/@GodGundamNT1, I see exactly where you're coming from but this is in no way sponsored. Like I said, it's a bit of fun and the game is better than I thought it would be but I'm still much more into single player RPGs (and even the elements of those in this MMO aren't quite enough to have me hooked) @dannyodwyer, Thanks! It had that binge playing effect on me too. @jollybest1, I hope not! Thanks for your input guys. I'm not an MMO convert (too stingy for anything involving a subscription fee) but it was pretty fun while it lasted. I didn't get terribly far in so thanks for the comments on what the rest of the game is like. Probably still going to mope about KotOR 3 for a while..
And ps; am not a fan boy. I just like good games and if swtor was crap i would ditch it like swg after cu / nge.. age of conan, lord of the rings online, war hammer online, rift, final fantasy 14, runes of magic, allods online, forsaken world, aion, to name a few games that are just bad in some way or the other. Am i right for saying there bad, or is it just my opinion on how i view a game and what i expect... /see what i did there : )
First off ... 3/4 of you are talking bs... swtor is beta than anything on the market right now.. that includes wow / rift / lotro / etc. All this talk about its not an mmo and its horrible .. yea right. Problem is most of you either wanted swg 2 or wow 2. Add to the fact that most of you wow players are burnt because you can use macros to have the game play for you. Yes they are bug and what not but for a game thats only been out for 4 months or so.. its the best right now on the market. I hear people talking about tera... sorry thats just aion with a new skin. And that crappy combat system with no auto lock and having to place the X on your target to hit it is going to suck. Add that combo to pvp and people that are good at straffing are going to own everyone else. Gw2 please.. another cash cow [ pay to win ] and yea it looks good.. but lets see how many gold sellers flock to that game as well as diablo 3.
lot of white knights on here. You realize this chick wouldn't give you the time of day in real life, right?
I played SWTOR for 2 months. I think the only reason i played it that long was the Star Wars brand. As it has been said before, SWTOR is WoW with lightsabers. Questing is the same droll of find the npc, do the quest, return to npc. PvP is beyond broken, and two faction mmos create way more problems balance wise than intended (Illum). Lastly i am tired of the must be in a guild with strict time requirements to enjoy the endgame content. I've been following Guild Wars 2 with much enjoyment as it looks to solve a lot of the problems mentioned along with others not mentioned. Time will tell,
