We guide you through the corporate world of the future, a future full of bullets.
Playing the game on PS3 as I type this. Managed to get to the 7th part and it's a struggle to keep playing. The saturated lighting effects are stupid (seriously, why would any office complex put in a light that blinds you in their cafes and foyers?), the FPS gameplay is shoddy at best and the crouch+cover mechanics are about 8 years old. You run to a wall, can't fire around it, so run to a lower piece of cover, press crouch and then it's potluck as to whether you'll peek over the top or just stand up and shout 'I'm here, shoot me please'. I don't mind challenging games IF you are given mechanics to work with, but this is just ridiculous. You can toss 5 grenades at one guy and he might cough after, or empty 4 full clips into someone's head and get nothing. Then you fire a single shot pistol at someones neck and get a headshot as a result which instantly kills them. There's no feeling of reward, there's no sense of actually being there in the missions. It's basically an FPS from 2001 with slightly prettier yet detrimental graphics. I reckon 7.5 is generous based on single player (which is all I've played so far). I'd give it a 6 or 6.5. Syndicate was a great game, this remake is mediocre at best.

Wow totally missed this game. Saw it referenced on one of Kevin's forum posts, and now it's on my radar. Wish I would have known about this a month ago!
I'm liking the campaign so far doesn't seem all that bad i got to say that because of all the other shooters out there I'm kind of getting used to great visuals great online and terrible single player so i really didn't mind the single player since it had great shooting action and was actually kind of difficult.
I loved both campaing and co op, but co op is really awesome, I played the demo hundreds of times, only one map and never got bored!
One of the worst games i've played this year. I must agree with InThNameOfMara that people are really starting to get spoiled with games. But Syndicate is really not worth my time. Just because Kevin gave a 7.5 and most critics gave that score, i just bought it when it came out. So wrong because it eventually deserves the same score as the recent games like RE: ORC and NG3.
This game looks so awesome, especially with the variety of guns and how good they look/sound during gameplay. I just wish the game had more depth to it like the original in a way. What would have made this game perfect is if it had a dynamic/random mission assignment function where the Syndicate would send you on random different missions to different parts of the world and you helped build up the Corporation's income/research etc. It would take away from the linear script that so many shooters have cheaped out to.
I think people are really starting to get spoiled with games, I've been enjoying this game very much so far.
Hhmmm....not sure on this one. Tough call to make for me. I am spoiled with games like Deus Ex and so forth, this might be worth a shot though.
I completely understand Stan_boyds perception, and I agree. Its like comparing the original pacman to the ps2 3d version that came out and was completely different from running around in a 2d maze. Or the original GTA top-down view vs. the modern 3rd person GTA. I never played the original Syndicate, missed it by a few yrs (born 1990), and Im looking forward to getting this game based solely on what Im seeing now, not 20yrs ago from the original. There are many original games that have been modernized and remade. I wouldnt go so far as to call everyone a cry baby, everyones got different taste, but I do respect a new game with an old title as a completely different game all together. Todays gaming industry is becoming less and less original, so having not played the game yet, Ill leave my "review" at that. For all I know the game COULD be terrible, but I never compare any game based on what it WAS 20yrs ago. Im not downing anyones opinion, just my personal view. Im big into single player campaigns and good stories, but a fun shootemup game here and there (like Dead Island) tickles my fancy too. So yes, Im looking forward to getting this game, irregardless of reviews.
Seems like an excellent video game but multiplayer options are becoming super predictable.
Only played the singleplayer for 90 minutes something (chapter 3) and loving it so far. It doesnt come close to the atmosphere that Deus Ex had but as a shooter it works great. This comes from one of the few who liked Rage when that came out so i might not be to trustworthy.
God I hate this reviewer,he has contradicted himself so many times it is a shock that he has not been replaced.
To be honest, when I saw a lower score, I was really tempted to give it a go, because I sure as hell am not attracted to the "new" style of shooters you branded with a 9. Will wait a bit for the price to drop, dough...
@Stan_boyd you really should not make comments when you don't know what your talking about. You come across as not to bright.
I had an idea for some DLC I'd like to see for this. There's a Half-life mode called Natural Selection - http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns/about/ - which is described as a combination of FPS and RTS; one player is the Commander, who has a top-down view of the level while the rest of the team plays in first person. If you could do the same kind of thing in Syndicate's game engine, you could have a team of 4 agents with a 5th player able to scroll around the map and help give the team situational awareness. What I was thinking was "What would the original Syndicate be like if you replaced the AI agents with human players?"
People label it as FPS since it's in FPS view. You guys make me sick and not even give the game a chance. If it had Third person view people will be happy, but after so many they'll whine and cry and say TPS. ALL GAMES ONLY HAVE SO MANY VIEWS!!! SUCK IT UP BABIES AND GET USED TO IT! I'm sure most people would like to play this in FPS rather than third view since it will be a lot easier to play. Have you ever thought about that?!? Take every third person view game there is and you will see that mostly all of them have high ratings. WHY?!? People haven't realized TPS yet!
@ raumer_raul i not sure what the song is but if u like dubstep u should check out NEROs album called Welcome Reality
I don't get the Crysis comparison. Maybe because of the white-plated weapons? Becuase to me, it shares a lot more with Killzone 2/3 's visual style.
Wow I see alot of crybabies on here. "Waaah this isn't the game I played back in the 90's". Nope cause this isn't the nineties and games have changed since then. And to all the people who say the old syndicate had a better story please give me a drink of whatever you are drinking. You played as mindless drone soldiers stealing tech for a corporation. In this game you also play as a mindless drone soldier stealing tech for a corporation, its the exact same story. Now I am not saying to go out and buy this game, but first you all whine about how Call of Duty is the same game over and over, and now you are whining because Syndicate isn't the same game as it was before, make up your minds.
i really want the song at the start, its not the skrillex remix as some have mentioned, also deffo buying this badboy
It''s not THE remix, of the ol' Syndicate theme, by Skrillex, no. But it is by him, nonetheless, he did the soundtrack. At least the dubstep tunes; have a hard time imagining him doing the other, typically ambient tracks.
The developers tought that it would be epic ,even I did but the game turned out to be a failure
netter99 - Dont pick, play Deus Ex aswell. I promise u will like it even tho the graphics isnt up do date (obviously)
Thanks for the review. When I heard the game was supposedly being "banned" (read: publicity stunted) in Australia a few months ago, my heart sank as I expected it was going to be yet another sub-par disappointment that could've been so much more; exactly the same situation as Aliens vs Predator was. What a let down... I loved the style and character of Bullfrog's Syndicate Wars years ago but as I'm not a fan of these soulless generic COD style shooters where mindless gameplay is the focus I'll definitely be skipping this pile of rubbish. What a missed opportunity... I can almost see Peter Molyneux *face-palming* as I type.
Face-palming to...? His Lionhead studios didn't develop this, but he was involved in the project, 'far as I know.
Thank you for the review. I wont get this game, the old syndicate was Great. This one sounds like a waste of time.
@netter99 Deus EX of course, this game is more about visuals n presentation n nothing breath taking but DEUS is pretty well balanced n created dont waste $60 on this
Nice review Kevin. I thought the game would be all flashy after I saw the trailers and teasers.. Turns out it aint. We tend to compare this to Deus Ex.. Although there is a lotta similarity, this is more of an action packed adventure game than an RPG, while Deus Ex was more of a strategy game with a good story line to go by.
@netter99 if you want an excellent campaign and a game full of content that last at least 30 hours (it can be 50 hours or more if you completed all the side missions) go for DEUS EX Human revolution ,but if you want a shooter with a five hours campaign and a fun multiplayer mode that last 5 to 7 seven hours (it depends on the skills of the team of course) go for syndicate.
