- Jun 24, 2012 5:53 pm GMT...and I really don't know what I saw in the web swinging. Sure, it's cool that webs need to attach to something, and you can upgrade the hell out of it; but because the webs have to attach to something, I felt impeded. I think WoS did a great job at this. The webs go towards a building, but don't attach. This gives the illusion that they are attached to the building, and doesn't handicap you in anyway(so far). At first I wasn't going to get this game just because the webs didn't attach. But now I just might. What was so great about the webs attaching to the buildings anyway? I remember playing SM2 when I was younger like every one else. But I think we just have found memories of it since it was the first sandbox Spiderman game. Not because the webs attached to buildings like people like to bring up all the time here. Go back and play it, and see if you feel like me. I'd actually like to have a MATURE debate on this.

Seriously? I thought it was going to be like WoS where the webs are angled towards a building, not just up and down. I'm going to look at some videos on web swinging, and see if I notice it. Just straight up and down is ridiculous.

I hate how the web just goes straight up towards the middle of the screen in this game regardless of what is around you or even if there should be a building tall enough. - Jun 24, 2012 7:12 pm GMTThey focused too much on the "Oh the camera is up close to Spider-man to get you to feel like him" factor and not on the ACTUAL web-swinging part.

Yeah. I just watched a video, and it was like they didn't even try. I thought the webs would at least angle towards the buildings. At least WoS tricked your mind into thinking the web was on a building. Man, I'm seriously disappointed now. I know it's such a trivial thing, but it's still important. I'll even explain why I believe it's important. Think of it; it is in no way hard to program the web to any different angle. They can just program the end of the web as say point A. Then program the buildings, or even an area around the buildings as point B. Then program the game to where when you hit the swing button, point A goes to any part of point B that is above you at about a 70° angle. Problem solve. Spidey will swing at a reasonable angle and we get the illusion that the web is on something. It's so easy to do, I learned how to do similar stuff in high-school. So my logic is this: if they wouldn't spend the time and effort on something so easy to do, how can I trust that they put enough effort into the game itself. I mean come on. Depending on how big the map is, this can be done in 2 weeks; a month tops. If they delay the game, and do this very simple thing, they'd make much more money. Not just because the web swinging would be better, but also because it would be released after the movie it is a sequel to is out. My friend really wants this game, but won't buy it until he sees the movie. What do you guys think?

Yeah, the movie comes out the 3rd. Let me know how the game is. I am really liking WoS, and if it's better than that, I'll overlook the asinine web swing. Cause gameplay is the most important in a game.

Agreed, WoS owns SM2. People go on and on about SM2 when it's nothing special anymore.
The game is also almost 10 years old. There have been that many Spider-Man games since then. It's gonna be hard to stay fresh after that long.

It's just not that memorable to me. I recall the PS1 games and the first movie game clear enough, but Spidey 2 is just a bland black hole to me.

That **** would be on my tombstone, "Here Lies *MY NAME*, Who Died Fighting a ****ING LION. RIP *MY NAME*, Whose Balls Were Like Brass." -Black_Arch - Jun 25, 2012 11:18 am GMTThere were many things I didn't like about Spider-man 2 and, believe it or not, one of the things was the webswinging.
Don't get me wrong, before this game there were virtually no webswinging mechanics in any Spider-man game. Which sounds completely ridiculous with hindsight. So Spider-man 2 introducing a functional webswinging mechanic into an open world environment was the definitive turn for all Spider-man games to follow.
Luckily, they did. With some more simple and some maybe too clunky, but they all had a good feel to them and got the job done with breathtaking stunts. But even after playing Ultimate Spider-man, which arguably has the most simplistic and uninteresting webswinging in the franchise, I still felt like it worked much better than it did in Spider-man 2.
I kept my copy of Spider-man 2 for a while. In fact, I probably still have it somewhere, probably at my brother's apartment. So I was able to physically compare it to every other open world Spider-man game that followed. When you play them back to back you really see that Spider-man 2 was more of an experiment whereas the other games had much more focus with their webswinging.
The webswinging in Spider-man 2 was just a tad too frustrating to deal with. Spider-man would seem to completely defy even the most basic physics while swinging. It really throws you off when you expect a strand of web to sway and move fluidly but instead acts as if it's a stiff pole with a hinge at the top. It was very impressive and innovative of its time, but it was a project in its infancy, and it is painfully apparent when comparing it to the games that preceded it.
I suppose I should break it down from what I remember of Spider-man 2's webswinging.
1. The web behaved like a pole, not a rope. This makes some problems when trying to assume how Spider-man is going to move.
2. Did we need all those upgrades for speed? There were like... 30 or so. I don't think I even got all of them. 3 big upgrades to speed would have been better than increments of 10 changing it slightly as you play.
3. There were unnecessary abilities that never had much of an applicable use. Using web with both hands is one example. It's great for combat but pointless when webswinging. You would think this option would allow for better turning. Nope. And before anyone says "git gud" I would like to clarify that I completed every race and finished the game twice. I have "gawt gud" at the game. While little features like this seem "neat," they ultimately don't add anything or change the way the game is played. Basically, I would rather have the devs focusing on other things, like combat.
4. The animations. I know this is just aesthetic, but if you all can complain about something as stupid as web not looking like it attaches to buildings when it doesn't change a damn thing then I get to complain about Spider-man 2's weird and many times humorous animations. Has anyone tried webswinging really close to the ground to try and pick themselves back up? Yeah, it doesn't work in Spider-man 2. It's also the only free roaming Spider-man game that it doesn't work on. Spider-man does this completely stupid and hilarious thing. He shoots his web, grabs a hold of it like he's gonna swing, and then just runs slowly on the ground for 1 1/2 city blocks. While entertaining, it still looks embarrassing by a developer's standpoint. luckily, every other Spider-man game out there after this one learned from this stupid animation and made it so that Spider-man would do a little hop when one presses the webswing button on solid ground.

Which is why I find it silly when people go on and on about it till this day. SM2 was good for it's time, that was my point.

Well it kinda says something when there are games that are still trying to repilcate what it did right and can't.
And what games would those be?
Because WoS and this game are not trying to copy the double web swing shot and total realism, which was the main thing SM2 had. WoS went for a balance of realism and gameplay, which imo is the best route. This game totally just went gameplay, which I don't agree with.

- Jun 25, 2012 1:51 pm GMTWow, where did everyone who enjoyed Spider-Man 2 and still today go?
I still see no reason for a static swinging system + invisible walls when there is the option for a physics system where the world influences and controls your movement and you can control how you move based on it.
That static system was fine when we were virtually flying in the air like the first movie game and there isn't a focus on exploration at all.

Spiderman (2000)
Spiderman 2: enter electro
Spider man the movie
spidey swung from satellites or something in those.
besides, with the advent of internet connectivity, patches can cure all

Capcom should have died the hero. Instead, it's lived long enough for fans to see it become the villain.

Like I said, static swinging has its place, those are still among my favourite Spidey games for different reasons, they have different aims and hence different strengths. Also, it will likely never get patched in even as an option, they are going to ride on pre review sales and run with your money.
