In all my gametime with this game I always used the smith and enchant exploits. This ruined the game for me. I never had any challenge and all sense of progression was gone. I'm really itching to play this after dabbling with divinity 2 which was good but the game world is stupidly small.
My question is this: I want to make a battlemage ( based on anomander rake from malazan so will be 2 handed and destruct focused). Will something like that be viable on at least expert? I'm swearing off smith and enchant so all gear will need to be found. This question may seem silly but...is this possible? Is skyrim loot driven enough to do this and not just get frustrated and just make my own stuff?
And finally, how would I increase attributes? Is need plenty of everything considering the diff level and no enchant. Any tips?

I'm a novice here, but maybe my ideas can spark ideas in you or some one else. I've never used Alchemy, but if you are not doing Smithing and Enchanting, you might need to take it up and use potions for like fire resist for dragons and such. As a battle mage, stone flesh is amazing. I use that and bound swords. But yeah, exploiting glitches seem awesome at first, but then makes every thing seem lack luster really fast.

I played this crap out of this when I released, but like I said I always used exploits.
If nobody answers anything else at least tell me if skyrim has enough loot in it to be fun. I'm not asking for Diablo, but I need something....

you will ABSOLUTELY be viable. take a melee weapons kill (onehanded or twohanded) and a ranged skill (destruction or archery) then take a armor skill (light or heavy) and BAM you're viable.
i'd suggest in looking into restoration since healing yourself is ALWAYS useful.
edit- i play on expert and i dont use smithing or enchanting, well i improve my stuff, but it only ever gets up to fine or superior quality, which isnt much really)
even playing on adept, theres nothing wrong with it. if you're playing a character and you're getting a satisfying level of challenge out of it, then the difficulty level shouldnt be an issue.

2-2-1 is a good Magicka/Health/Stamina ratio.

Thanks guys. I just want to squeez as much fun out of skyrims combat as possible. And loot is a huge part of that.

I did exactly the same as you.
PLayed the game about 6 months ago, used smithing and enchanting and got bored by the design choices and the lack of challenge, even tough I always play on Master.
Then I got the cravings to come back a few weeks ago and restarted limiting myself to not use Smithing, Enchanting and Alchemy and off Only play on Master no matter what.
I got to say the game is completely different, it's a fantastic game and I really love it.
I really recommend you do the same thing.
It got plenty of loot, and everything good is super rare so you won't be over powered any time soon.
