The Elder Scrolls are not what they used to be

Difficulty:
Very Easy
Time Spent:
40 to 100 Hours
The Bottom Line:
"Total letdown"
In this review I will only talk about the bad aspects of the game, because there are many. Anything not mentioned I probably forgot about or found tolerable.

1. Terrible storyline. Not only are the main quest quests boring, but they ruin the lore of the game in a lot of aspects. Obviously most people don't care because they don't know anything about the lore.

2. Poor dungeon design. The puzzles are all stupid and crazy simple. It's like all the bad guys decided to put security involving 3 symbols and a claw which take about 5 seconds to actually get through, not very good security. Also, they got rid of levitation because....? It would ruin their dungeon design. You could just levitate to the end of every dungeon if you had it. Levitation was awesome in Morrowind and added another dimension to dungeon design since the higher level dungeons required such skills.

3. Level scaling. Not as bad as Oblivion, but any form of level scaling makes it feel more like a game and less like a world, not immersive at all.

4. No unique weapons/armor. Well there are a few, but most of them are crap and they scale to the level you found them at, but not up with your skills. What a stupid system. I get a legendary axe at a low level, then 15 hours later, weapons made out of basic materials are better. Pathetic.

5. Smithing is broken. 20 hours into the game I can forge literally the best armor in the game. I simply do not need to ever use any other weapons/armor. In Morrowind you would find things after 100 hours that were extremely powerful, but extremely hard to get. In Skyrim it's a cakewalk.

6. Way too easy. And no, I'm not using the bloody difficulty slider to make it harder, what a retarded addition to the series. It was in Oblivion and should have been removed. After 20 hours I was practically invincible, nothing could touch me. In Morrowind, after 50 hours there were some areas/NPC's/monsters that would destroy you if you tried to attack them.

7. Instant, stupidly accurate compass. It's all like "Go find the ancient lost tomb which nobody knows where it is. Here, I will mark its exact, pinpoint location on your map, and even if you get lost, there will be an arrow telling you EXACTLY where to go." Seriously there is ZERO exploration in this stupid game.

8. Fast travel. I am not against fast travel completely, but it should be via carriages or silt striders or boats like in Morrowind, not just click and appear.

9. Guilds/factions are short, easy, boring and do not clash. In Morrowind, to become the master of the fighters guild you had to steal from the mages guild as well as eventually kill the heads of the theives guild. In Skyrim you can become Grandmaster of the mages guild without ever casting a single spell. Seems legit.

10. Dragons are dead easy to kill. Once you get stormcall shout, just use it and wait while they get killed by lightning.

11. No expansions, just DLC. There's a difference, and it sucks, especially since Bethesda said they were going to make big expansions, not DLC.

12. Skill tree is terribad. It's not possible to max stat everything in one playthrough because of perks, which is retarded. You should be able to be master of everything with extreme patience. Not to mention they removed half the skills and lumped everything into two handed and one handed weapons, even a greater pillaging of the game than from Morrowind to Oblivion.

Morrowind was a 9.5, Oblivion was an 8.0, this game is a 6.0. Most say Skyrim is better than Oblivion, and it is in some aspects, but overall I found myself not liking Skyrim anywhere near as much as Oblivion, and it can't even hold a candle to Morrowind.

I hate it when I hear people say how good Skyrim is, then I say it's crap compared to Morrowind, and they just laugh and say the graphics look bad and therefore it must be crap. That's the kind of crowd Bethesda is going for though. Not to mention these people are playing Elder Scrolls on a console, which is a complete waste of time, no matter how much Bethesda want to shaft the PC community.

It's a decent game in its own right, but it's not Elder Scrolls. Please kill the series ASAP or fire the game designers that have moved in since Morrowind.
