His opinion about games being art mirror mine exactly. First "art" has to be defined. Then if the definition is broad enough to include media such as movies, music, comics, or maybe even custom cars that have been sculpted and painted for show, then yea, games can be recognized as potentially an art form. I think some developers, especially big name developers, will shy away from declaring games an art form because it puts them on the spot. It could be erringly reported that Udea considers himself an artist, and whenever he builds a game he considers it to be a work of art. Hideo was asked the same question a few years back and he was unequivocal in his denying that games were or could be an art form. He wasn't interested in being held to that high of a standard. Who can blame him?

All I can say is he gets it. He understands what makes great games so great. It's as simple as that.

I wish he went further into detail about games being art, seeing as he is one of main points and contributors to the medium as an art than any other dev/director

@supa_badman I wish all of these were longer.  But I think he brings up a good point in that, if you are going to call games art what else would you have to call art?  Furthermore which games are art and which are not?

@lumbergoose I don't think that's the point he was trying to bring up. It's more like if you accept to call all these other mediums art then games can also be considered that as well. Not all movies/books/music have artistic value and not every drawing is a magnificient painting either. The same goes for games.

Surprisingly insightful comment: "to delude them into feeling this is a personal experience they are having." Games that offer great amount of freedom are often a lot of fun for the player, but rarely interesting to the audience. A game is an expression by its maker. Yet we as gamers want to play a game, not to watch a CGI movie. Here is a man who has vocalized the challenge so many great game makers feel. I am off to pick up a copy of ICO + SoC...
