EA is ONLY publishing in NA, cash shop is ONLY vanity!
- Jul 4, 2012 5:56 am GMT
I feel the need to clear up this for people, since there's still so much hysteria surrounding this topic.
1: NO, EA has NOTHING to do with the development of this game, nor do they dictate how Funcom should get paid from their players, they are ONLY responsible for shipping the physical boxes in North America. Rest of the world EA has no influence over whatsoever. Also, keep in mind that the world does go beyond the borders of the USA. ;)
2: In-game cash shop is ONLY vanity items! You can not buy experience boosters, crazy gear for PvP or anything like that. The cash shop is full of vanity stuff like complete outfits like cowboy outfit, gothic outfit, skater outfit, and several separate pieces of clothing like different types of jackets, vests, pants, bunny slippers (yes!) and sunglasses. The only things in the cash shop that give a tiny advantage is the "starter weapons", a "screaming demon ring" and a pet that heals you the first couple of hours. After playing for 4-5 hours the pet does not give you the healing buff anymore, and you've already found better loot than the starter weapons. Also keep in mind that clothing can also be bought from vendors in the game for regular in-game currency. You dont HAVE TO use the cash shop! No advantage whatsoever!
There! Phew... Just HAD TO clarify that for people.
:)

That's exactly what EA wants you to think...and it works.

Unless you've got some source, I would have to say its possible that EA won't take a hand in a funcom's work in this case . I'm not going to go track down the sources for that guess, but I just mean to say it's possible they are, in this case, just distributing the game.
I'm fairly certain in most other cases that what you say is true though.
Glad for this thread clearing up the cash shop.

This is exactly what I expect from EA, as well, but it doesn't add up here.
If EA had a hand in this game, it would have been out within a year, the most, of their signing on. Would have been rushed through as some CoD (I know they don't make that game but I know they desperately want to be ones who do, given what they've done to Battlefield) and action game clone. It wouldn't have tried so hard to make a story/pvE based MMO (which seems to be nipping it in the ass as the combat is apparently unsatisfying)

Yeah you're right, atleast I hope you are haha. :) I just hate when EA is pulling their "need a quick buck" scheme, destroying something with great potential, it really digusts me.
Anywho, I'm going to give this a shot though, hoping it won't be a disappointment. Did you get this game yet?

Well, sure... Funcom went looking for a publisher early 2011 and that's when they made the deal with EA. At that time they were just a few months away from starting the initial closed beta test, so EA couldn't have had much influence either way :) So, just to repeat this again:
1: EA is only publishing in North America (and helping out with marketing in some areas, banners and so on)
2: Cash shop is only vanity.
I'm sure a lot of people don't want to trust Funcom after the tragedy that was Age of Conan (can't blaim them), but Ragnar Tornquist is the game director this time and the difference in quality is like night and day. It's been a fantastic journey to experience how the game has developed since I first joined the closed beta early this year, and in my honest opinion the game is a true gem. BUT...and there's a but! The game will not be for everyone, it's hugely story-driven and it can be really hard to get into if you start playing it as you would, say, World of Warcraft. You NEED two weapons, and you MUST focus on more than a single build (you can save builds and switch at any time). Different enemies have different weaknesses so it's absolutely needed to have a backup plan and a second or third build. Hope you guys decide to at least give it a try, it might be worth it if you're looking for something a little different! Players looking for hand-holding and big glowing signs that shows where to go and what to do should stay away. ;)

[/QUOTE] I just read a thread about the CEO resigning upon TSW launch. That's very unsettling. :/

Nothing to worry about! He didn't actually resign, he just moved to a different position within the company, something he's been wanting to do for a while. He just wanted to complete the current project first, and after all, the game was already finished and ready to ship the day they announced it.
If he had left Funcom completely, THEN I would have been nervous as hell...heheh. Ole Schreiner, the new man in charge, has actually been posting a lot in the closed beta forums, and I think he's been working much much closer with the development of The Secret World than the old guy had. So I can't say I see any problems with that ^^ I suspect Mr. Schreiner is an even more suited guy to be in charge of this company tbh.

Gamer apathy. Slowly, we begin to accept every new cost as okay.
What i object to is box+sub+item mall is bald faced greed at it's finest. Petty too, like a pay toilet.

if you could see outside of your own little bubble, you'd see that this has been the most successful and prevelant business model for MMO's since the 90's. its pretty narcassistic to think the world only changes when you notice it change.

Tried the game, and I'm pretty disappointed.
This is not worth the money in it's current state, wait a couple of months folks.
