Dark Out Mode... So we punish folks for doing good?

Playing this several times i've encountered dark out mode quite a bit. Although it tells you it only happens when kickout mode and another thing happens (Which if that's the case, i've apparently missed hundreds of kickout modes)

So my ultimate question is... aside from getting 20seconds of time, we're being punished for doing good in a game?

Do you tap the touchpad in like crazy when it happens? Clears it up a bit...

Eh...? You get an extra 20 seconds, with a handicap. It's not a punishment; it's more like a bonus.

I think the 20 seconds only comes into play at the end of the 60 right? If so, it's purely bonus.
