We get our hands on some of the new characters in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 at Comic-Con 2011.
The 2011 San Diego Comic-Con is in full swing, and as soon as the doors opened we made a beeline for Capcom's booth to sample the new characters coming to Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. While we were there, we bumped into Capcom's special adviser, Seth Killian, and chatted him up on some of the early details of this flashy 2D fighter sequel. While he couldn't divulge too much, we did get a sense for some of the big changes coming to the game's core mechanics. You can watch the entire conversation for yourself in the interview below. Afterward, we got the chance to go hands-on with some of the new characters coming to this game.
The majority of our time was spent playing as Ghost Rider. After going three rounds with this supernatural antihero, we were reminded of the bionic commando himself, Nathan "Rad" Spencer. However, while Spencer was mostly a melee-focused fighter, Ghost Rider had a strong keep-away game thanks to the reach afforded by his flaming chain. This weapon could grapple foes from across the screen, while his launcher attack also boasted some incredible reach. Every so often an opponent would get in close, and we found ourselves at a loss for escape options. Similar to Spencer, Ghost Rider's speed was pretty sluggish.
We also got to sample Hawkeye and Strider (sorry Firebrand). While Taskmaster does invoke the heroic archer in some of his moves, his repertoire pales in comparison to the man himself. Hawkeye's numerous projectile attacks each had some sort of special property to them, whether it was a slow-acting poison or an arrow that left our foe momentarily stunned. We also didn't feel limited when it was time to get in close and mix things up in melee. Hawkeye felt nimble and confident at any range. Strider didn't feel far removed from his previous Marvel vs. Capcom incarnations. His reach with a blade was still deceptively long, and he could lay down a lot of projectile pressure thanks to his mechanical animals and ouroboros special.
Even though we didn't get a chance to take Firebrand out for a test drive personally, Killian wasn't afraid to put us in our place with the gargoyle. The beatdown we received was quick and decisive, with Firebrand's speed and maneuverability giving us flashbacks of Felicia matches gone horribly wrong. But while the feisty catgirl stuck mostly to the ground, Firebrand could take to the skies and swoop down on us from above. His quick speed, flight, and numerous projectiles let him control a lot of screen while keeping us guessing as to where he would strike next. Love it or hate it, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is on the way, and we'll be sure to keep you up to date with all the latest developments.
It does appear that Capcom is screwin' over people who already bought the game, but I simply rented it on Gamefly so I'll pick up this version. If they release Ultimate MvC3: Complete Edition after this, well... I can do without Capcom's fighting games for the foreseeable future.
They should put some samurais in there to show those new guys how to use a sword. They need someone from Onimusha. Oni or Jubei because I read that Samanouske would cost them to put him in this game, but he would be the best samurai.
Hmm... Where are the Darkstalkers that didn't make it to the previous 3 games. Still no Lord Raptor or Jon Talbain -.-'
@Boris747 Because at standard DLC pricing for every fighting game, 10 new characters would cost you about 50 dollars (both characters in MvC3 were $5 each, and all the DLC chars for Mortal Kombat as well.) Or if you wanted to go with the SSF4A upgrade pricing, which was $15 for 4 characters, that's still 45 dollars. That's not including anything else new to the game. Yes they could release some of the changes as a patch. But in some instances It's just not possible. Their seems to be a huge misconception among gamers that a patch can fix everything. Patches aren't miracle cures, they are a band-aid. Something like a total overhaul to the online structure usually can't just be patched in. As for the notion that Capcom should have done it right the first time. Well I can't really argue that, and actually agree.
I only hope that venom and carnage are going to be included in the 12-new-playable-characters roster.
@keech i rather pay 1600 Microsoft points than dish out $40 for a new game tbh. That is just taking the piss now. if you think about it 1600 got you a new story on red dead redemption, and battlefield bad company 2. why cant they add the characters and fix the online gameplay as a patch. out of all that was devastated in the Japan tsunami capcom should have been the first, and now they have made exacly the same game but added 10 new characters to it since jill and shuma dont count as new
@singhellotaku First I'll say I'm not to thrilled about a whole new iteration of this game coming out a mere 9 months after It's original release. BUT 12 new character, new stages, a total roster rebalancing (including some characters getting brand new moves), and the entire online model getting overhauled is only worth $15 dollars to you? If they slow rolled all the new content in this game out as DLC you would be paying a LOT more than 40 dollars I guarantee it.
@singhellotaku well depends if you play it on or offline, if you only play it offline and your favorite char in there it is useless anyway if you buy for a a character that you dont use anyway.
You know if these were released as 10 or 15 dollar mass expansions i'd be all for it but for $40 or $60... i've stuck with vanilla sf4 and i'll stick with vanilla mvc3 thank you.
wow capcom is so predictable i havent bought the original mvc 3 because i play games since the snes how many sf 2 versions where there capcom never changed that i havent bought the oroginal sf 4 i waited till ss 4 does anyone learn? And it is a fatal mistake from capcom because i thinik when they release another fighting game people will wait till they come with a final version i still think there are some people furious about when people buy sf 4 and then had to buy ss 4 again. I think capcom needs to reward those people that bought mkc 3 for full price.
venom from mvc2 is dead in the marvel universe . the new venom would play way different (Google new venom) if Marvel gave capcom permission to use the character. that's right folks marvel has the final say in which of its characters can be used not capcom.
Finally, Strider, should've been in there from the beginning, I wish they changed the gameplay though, make it more like MvC2, McV3 was too easy to play, 3 buttons I mean, you could do very long combos with very little effort, and even causal could kick you ass, I f****** hate it when casuals kick my ass.............
Maxwell: "So is there any sort of bonus or extra incentive for people who own the original Marvel vs. Capcom 3 going into Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3" Seth: " We'll see where we end up there..." Translation: "No, you won't get anything extra for buying the original. We got your money and there's nothing you can do about it. If you want new characters, give us more money. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go cackle maniacally. Bwahaha!"
@AceKiller47J i have to agree i did the math i bought Jill for mvc3 for 4 bucks. if i did that with 12 guys that's 48 bucks. but i do feel we all got short changed on mvc3 by not including these guys in the beginning. this is not the arcade days we don't want 9 versions of the same game with minor tweaks and a few extra characters put out a completed game we can enjoy.
Not interested Crapcom. You cancel a game that fans have been waiting years for, claim it's our fault it's canceled then you turn out this crap a update for a game thats onlt 5 months old! Not supporting Crapcom anymore hope you go down hill and have to close or get bought up by a better company.
My point of view why they did not include any of desired (personally by me at least) Marvel characters like Cyclops, Venom, Gambit, Psylocke, Jaggernaut etc (not too familiar with Capcom anyway) is that they need stuff to sell 3rd incarnation of MvC3. Which IMO undoubtly will follow.
I agree with Ricortez. I picked up the first game on launch day, thinking to myself, "I'm looking forward to that DLC" At that time, I heard that Jill Valentine from RE5 was going to be one of the first available characters for purchase. That idea didn't come to pass. Capcom purposely stayed away from that choice just to squeeze more money out of us (especially those who bought the first one) Also, I believe that the developers are going to tone down some of the characters (Sentinel most definitely. I really hope they leave him alone) I'm not complaining. I was just stating the facts. Here is a reminder to Capcom: wake up! This ain't the Street Fighter 2 days. You got us all before, those days are long gone. Some of us will not fall into the money pit again.
I can't believe MegaMan is not in the game yet they add stupid characters like Rocket Raccoon a Firebrand. I mean, where the heck is Cyclops, Gambit, Venom, Ken, Psylocke, etc.? If I remember correctly Megaman won the American and Japanese poll of the most requested character to appear in this game and now Capcom say that there wasn't enough fan feedback. Seriously what is wrong with them? They are so out of touch with the fans it's crazy. And let's not even talk about that awful DMC reboot, that abomination...
I feel i just payed 60$ for a beta version of the game. I think ill pass this and wait for the "Hyper Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3:Turbo Remix". What the hell capcom.
u guys who complain this should be just dlc should just do the math. each character is what 500 microsoft points meaning like 4-5 dollars a character through dlc. the game is gonna be 40 bucks with like 12 new characters onto top of what could possibly be new features. if u think about it where getting a good deal. so all u haters quit whining
they could have used the dlc with this. instead they're pulling their cheap crap that capcom always does with street fighter and steals more money from consumers. It's pure greed.
Its only going to be 40 bucks but if that price point puts you off you could always wait for it to reach the bargain bin or look for a retailer who sells them to have special deal and buy it from them by way of coupon. We still have Zero isn't he technically Mega Man but with a beam sword? Do you think they'll ever release any of the other megaman characters like Rock man?
Some good characters but overall a horrible list. Rocket Racoon, Nova, Vergil. Do we really need a third Devil May Cry character? And doesn't Dante have a Vergil costume. Also where's Mega Man, Gambit, Venom. All these highly demanded characters. I guess their not as important as a giant raccoon. God Capcom really. Also any news on if this will have a DLC option like SSF4 Arcade Edition or if it's retail only. Cause if it's retail only I'm gonna trade in MvC3 now to get maximum value.
I love how they didn't bring up the general consensual outrage that fans have displayed since the announcement of this. Seriously obnoxious.
All this should have been in the first game lol i hate lazy game designers but what can u do guess i will give it a try.
Capcom: Strider Firebrand Vergil Frank West Phoenix Wright Nemesis Marvel: Ghost Rider Dr Strange Nova Rocket Raccoon Hawkeye Iron Fist
Why not Howard the Duck instead of Rocket Racoon? Rocket Racoon is way to left field WTF? Howard th Duck people know.
They should have added all these characters in the first game! There should be a ton of characters in MVC3. I bet next time they will release Super Ultimate MVC3.
Looks pretty slick. Vergil and Nemesis will be neat to bust some heads with. The Marvel side, however, looks a little...weak. Rocket Racoon? Out of a pool of hundreds of better characters we get Rocket Racoon? Ironfist and Nova are pretty bottom of the barrel as well. How about Daredevil? Or Carnage? Or Bullseye? Or Punisher? There's already throwaway garbage characters IN MVC3 I don't play as. It really doesn't need anymore.
Why would they release 12 characters for 20 bucks, when each individual is sold for 5? You get the full game plus new modes and 12 additional characters for 40 bucks. And its not really a middle finger if they do it with EVERY fighting game they release. You should have seen it coming. I did. And guess what? I'll have 2 versions of MvC3. Because 12 additional characters are worth 40 dollars to me. Hold up 12 new characters, PLUS Jill and Shuma-gorath. So that's 14 characters. 70 bucks just as DLC or 40 bucks for the new game.
It is a lame move by Capcom. Should at least be a $20 DLC. Freaking Strider and Dr Strange going to have to buy it... Any new Darkstalkers? Still lame move Capcom...
You arent the only upset one. MvC3 barely came out in February and we are already getting a better version within the end of the year. As I said before these new characters and stages better be available as a download, or Im never buying another Capcom fighting game, as how they constantly re-re-re-re-release it with more and more stuff, giving the middle finger to anyone that has bought it already.
