The Big Three- who will win?
A debate that could go on for hours, who will win the Console war of this generation? But winning it isn't just necessarily who sells the most but its also who gets the most attention from the gamer and who has the best stuff to offer.
Right now it may just look like the Wii has it wrapped up with all these new things it offers. The problem with assuming that is twofold
1. The Wii is a party system and isn't really even in the next generation war. Its graphics are not of the same level as that of the Xbox 360 and the PS3.
2. While it seems to have enough to keep going, its games can never truly be real non party/kid games because it lacks the feel of the other two with a simple controller and because of this its going to get old eventually.
While I do admit that the Wii has done well, I have always thought that it would start off strong and then die off after it starts to lose some interest over the same things over and over again and the lack of the real games that drive the market. Face it, casual gamers aren't going to be spending money forever on Wii games.
With the Wii out of the way, its time to move to the two big ones that are dueling it out in the same "weight class" persay. These two systems seemed to be ones that would be neck and neck for a good long time because the PS2 was so strong and the xbox had that good long headstart. The problem is that sony has stayed with the wrong buisness plan and has almost garanteed coming out on the bottom of this one. My reasons for saying this are:
1. They have lost focus of the games just as they did with the PSP. They focus on the media aspects too much instead of getting what gamers want, games. Look at E3. How much time did they spend talking about their new Home and the psp connecting to the tv. These aren't things that blow you away. When someone thinks of an answer to "What do you want to see at E3?" they aren't going to say, I WANNA SEE MORE MEDIA FEATURES ON MY 600 DOLLAR CONSOLE. They want to see, games, games and possibly more games. Just as the PSP is losing to the DS this way, the PS3 will follow.
2. Related to my previous point, they have lost exclusives and haven't secured enough to match the 360's lineup. Assassin's Creed and GTA4 were big exclusives to have and now a system that costs less has them. MGS4 and warhawk, which doesn't really blow you away as much as other games could, are the only bright spots that can possibly match. There are others but they aren't proven console sellers or newsbreakers. And to add to this, MGS4 may go to xbox360 one day. Is halo 3 gonna go to PS3? No.
3. The price is too high for what they offer. They may have better graphics soon, but are slightly better graphics and a more expensive format in blu-ray worth 200 more then the system with the better half of what I've mentioned above. I don't think that extra media features is gonna do it for them. This generation is just like the last generation but switched around in a bunch of ways. Just to highlight the points:
The 360- costs less, slightly less graphics, more games, came out early- sound similar to the PS2? It should
The PS3 - higher cost, slightly better graphics and overal system, less games (exclusives) and came out after - We have a winner for new xbox right here.
While there are so many more points that could be touched on here, I hope I have layed out the main ones. This is just the same as the last console generation and just the same as the current DS/PSP duel. The winner isnt the better system, its the one with the better game library. All the rest really just turns out to be something to lighten up your experience.
That being said, I predict that the winners of this generation in order will be:
The 360 - While the console may sell less then the Wii in the end, it will have captured enough attention from the community to propel it into the next race as the leader in the console industry. It, put simply, has the best games.
The Wii - While it may sell the most, its sucess with a "gamecube expansion pack" will not garantee its success when it comes time to make another new item. This is a system all on its own and its not going to give it any leverage with whatever it tries next. That and the new ideas will wear out sometime when the same games are made over and over again.
The PS3- This system will definitly be the most powerful, but it will have the weakest third party support and it will lack the games to lead it to victory. Its near impossible to make up ground on a frontrunner like that of the 360 and based on how much they do to salvage the rest of its dignity, it may turn out to be the last time sony has a system worth caring about.
That or they may end up like Sega. Poor Dreamcast, always my favorite.
