Retro Gaming on Linux
Although I know there are a lot of great emulators for Windows ... I now have VMWare running on my Linux PC with a couple of Virtual Machines running various OS versions.
Plain ol' dosbox for Linux is working well although I miss some of the MS DOS commands. Unfortunately, my original set of MS DOS 6.22 disks, the 3.5" variety, no longer work - not that it matters since I haven't had a floppy drive connected to my PC for the last 4 years!
I have two Windows 98 disks - but the boxes with the Registration Keys are long gone so I had to resort to a warez hack to get 98 working. But it does work and although I can't use Windows Update to get it up to the point where MS stopped supporting it, I have got enough to get a few old games working that I couldn't get to work under XP.
It will also be interesting to see how well XP works on a VMWare session under Linux. Plenty of room on the Linux partition to try it out!
Now to clean up the study so I can find the rest of my old disks - Anyone remember the Spellcasting 101 series?
If only I could find my Infocom Collectors Pack CD!- Posted May 21, 2007 11:39 pm PT

Linux and games
Now that I have Ubuntu Linux 7.04 working beautifully with my ATI x1950 Pro AGP and wireless networking ... I'm finding the only remaining problem is the lack of games.
Neverwinter Nights 1 works beautifully under Linux and there are plenty of Doom/Quake knock-offs ... but I'm not a big fan of FPS games so it looks like I'll be sticking with NWN1 for a while or, sadly, dual booting into Windows and playing NWN2 and Oblivion.
Linux is now pretty much at the point that you can use it as a home desktop, especially Ubuntu which is by far my favourite distro, so at what point will publishers start porting to Linux?
I'll stick with the dual boot for now but unless Vista is released as a free OS, XP will be the last MS OS I ever use.
