The least valuable player in the Majors is...

Miguel Batista! As of today, the bottom 3 worst VORPs (Value Over Replacement Player) are:

    1. Miguel Batista, SEA
    2. Tony Pena, KC
    3. Boof Bonser, MIN

It takes a special kind of bum to post a VORP of -21.1, as Batista has so far. In simple terms, that means he's given up 21 more runs than you'd expect from a typical minimum wage-earning pitcher that enters Spring Training struggling to avoid roster cuts.

What happened to this guy? I was excited having a 16 game winner sitting in the #5 spot of the rotation. His home numbers are abysmal: 8.26 ERA, 2.06 WHIP, .317 BAA. I didn't think those numbers were possible in Safeco.

    The end of the Crapometer.

In a previous blog, I presented the Crapometer - a measure for seeing which Mariner would be the crappiest - Richie Sexson or Brad Wilkerson. With yesterday's release of Sexson added to Wilkerson's release way back in late April or early May, the Crapometer has outlived its original purpose.

Just for the hell of it, though... let's see what the final standings might've been. Note that Wilkerson's ratings include his performance with Toronto.

As of today, Wilkerson has a reading of 37.0 on the Crapometer, due mostly to his poor .207 AVG with runners in scoring position. His crap score isn't quite as high as it should be at this stage in the season because of his transition from a starter to a role player. Had he played more regularly, he'd be on a pace for a score of 81 at the end of the season. Pretty lousy...

...but nowhere near as terrible as Sexson. Man, this guy stunk. As of yesterday, Sexson's score was already at 72.4. With an OBP of .312 w/ bases empty and an abysmal .123 AVG w/ RISP, it's no wonder. Even with the Mariners' effort of reducing his playing time, he was still gunning for a final score of 119.

So there you have it - Sexson wins the title of Crappy McCrap over Wilkerson. Alas, the turd duo are no more. Good riddance.

    AARP is after me.

I received in the mail, a temporary AARP membership card and info on how to upgrade to a full membership.

Uh... what? I was born in the time of Reagan, not Eisenhower! Shouldn't they wait another 30 years before recruiting me?
