Video Games are Good for You

With the industry accumulating annual revenue of eleven billion dollars, video games have never been more widely established and ingratiated into society. However, many arguments have been introduced stating that video games can gave several negative effects on the people who play them. This attitude is incorrect because video games are beneficial and become highly advanced and also have grown into a more engaging form of mind-stimulating and constructive entertainment.

Proven several times, playing video games, or more popularly referred to as “gaming”, does appear to have many beneficial affects on those whom play them. Of these influences are the exponential increases in both hand-eye coordination and reaction time, specifically when playing action-oriented games. When gaming, people tend to drift into a state of intense concentration in which they can easily perform multifaceted tasks. Children who play video games become more visually adapted to fast-moving objects, which in turn result in their becoming better and more aware drivers, thus making our roads safer. In fact, the military has often used these forms of video games to enhance concentration in their fighter pilots.

Aside from the mental benefits of video games, there is a widely overlooked physical advantage to them. Video games are considered enjoyable because they allow people to virtually perform actions that they normally cannot. Whether we realize it or not, playing video games as a form of pleasurable activity relives stress. In addition to this advantage, various physical therapists have acknowledged video games as a manner of improving their patients’ rehabilitation process.

Although it has been stated over time that video games spoil minds and isolate people from others, video games have advanced greatly and now seem to be improving both literacy and communication skills. With the introduction of online gaming, games can now provide new means of social interaction. Such online games develop social interactions that defy the stereotype of the isolated gamer. Apropos to literacy, specifically designed video games, such as role-playing games, often contain a novel’s worth of reading and has been proven to dyslexic children as well others who have similar reading disabilities.

Throughout their history, video games have progressed in technology to a more beneficial enrichment towards visual and mental abilities. They have shown to press forward the expansion of mental skills, social interaction and literacy. Today, video games have excelled from a mere distraction, to become a productive addition to many lives. As they become more accepted, perhaps they will become widely enjoyed by both children and adults as a form of entertainment similar to movies.
