    Ouch..!

About a month after posting my last blog entry and being fed up with some poor Wii releases (Dead Rising being one of them), I went out on almost impulse and bought a cheapish PS3.

From about April onwards for a good solid 3 to 4 months, I virtually only played on my PS3. I've been playing a bit Wii games recently but I think both consoles seem to complement each other. My only slight regret about getting a PS3 is that I've seen the recent news about the PS3 Slim but it's too late now and I don't really regret buying the old style PS3 at all.

I've been getting a few pains in my hands after playing video games recently and I'm surprised that itmight be some kind ofearly warning of RSI creeping into my body, so I have to limit my time from now onwards. If RSI develops more it could mean taking injections into my hands everyday and that's a worrying price to pay for playing video games. Younger gamers beware!

And my next console will be....

I don't visit Gamespot much now, not nearly as much as I used to. Maybe it was that 'Kane and Lynch' review which resulted directly or not in some people leaving. Maybe my life's changed a bit as well, I don't know.

I got a Wii last year and on the whole I think it's a great console with a lot of good (too many rubbish ones however) games. Some years ago, I remember in a GS forum there was someone moaning about games like 'Cooking Mama' killing off the hardcore games and that with more of those games being released the gaming industry as we knew it would collapse. I thought the whole thing was a bit silly but it resulted in lots more people talking about casual (Wii) v hardcore (360/PS3) gaming which still continues today.

Despite me moaning about REUC for the Wii in a previous blog, it did turn out to be quite good. A lot of recycling but it did last a lot longer than Sega's Ghost Squad which isn't bad either. Also Resident Evil 4 Wii edition is a lot better than I thought because the controls do actually give the game a new edge to it. I've already got this game on both the Gamecube and PS2 but when Wii controls are fitted in well in a game they work well. However, I can think of many others that don't especially since I'm a left handed player and developers nearly always forget that we exist. The Wii is the only console I know where being left handed can be a problem in some games. Thanks Nintendo!

I recently got 'Dead Rising Chop Till You Drop' for the Wii and it's does disappoint to a degree. The amount of things cut out and the result in gameplay does not explain why a console which does have enough power behind it (Have a look at MP3 or RE4) comes out looking badly. Going back to Wii controls who on earth decided make players press Z and A to open doors, pick up stuff. I've never come across a game where you've had to do that and it makes little sense since from what I've seen so far of the game (I only got it very recently) the C button is rarely used. Why didn't you use the C button for opening things?

I know it's not all about the graphics (there's no anti aliasing in the game) but it does have an effect on the game. I saw demos of theDeadRisingback last year and it looks like Capcom just did nothing since then. It's such a shame because I still believe it could and should have been so much better.

Also recently I played a demo of RE5 on the PS3 and wondered why am I playing Dead Rising for the Wii when I can get to play this? For a long time I've been quite happy with the Wii and my old CRT TV (secretly hoping for an Xbox 360) but when I can get some money behind me (maybe in a years time) I will be getting a PS3.

I'm bored with Nintendo doing strange things and seeing some half baked game on youtube with someone moving the Wii remote around fooling people into thinking that the controls make the game. They don't but they are important.

I was a proud Gamecube owner last generation but later on I bought a PS2 which was a good move. I still love playing on the Wii but you can only go so far. With a PS3 I hope to go further...

    Resident Evil time fillers

The Resident Evil series has had some great moments but I have to admit I'm not keen on Capcom's current view on bringing two games over to the Wii.

'Resident Evil 4 Wii edition' is just a port over from the PS2 with some minor graphical updates and of course a new control scheme. Fine if you've never played the game before but if you have (who hasn't), there's not really much added from a game which came out over 2 years ago. It's hard to believe that Gamespot gave this game a 9.1 score. Seriously, time has passed and I think Wii owners are getting bored of port overs with Wii slapped on controls with little else added to the game.

Then we come to 'Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles', an on rail shooter which is supposed to fill in some of the gaps about the fall of the Umbrella company. Capcom have said that Wii owners don't want complex games (yet they release RE4) so the style of REUC fits into an easier style thus appealing to a bigger audience. In previous games you had to hunt around for keys to open doors which added time to the gameplay but now you can just shoot doors open. No style at all, just blast everything on sight.

Both these games are just time fillers until the real Resident Evil game comes out Resident Evil 5 and that won't be a collection of mini games, a house of the dead style shooter or a port over from a last generation console.
