My Friends

11Feb 13

It happens, right? You're busy sticking to one genre or one series that happens to demand a hell of a lot of your gaming hours (I'm looking at you 120 hours in Skyrim) and some excellent game just passes you by. Maybe you didn't have the system, maybe you were already committed to something else and it just didn't look that interesting or maybe you just put it off so often that it got buried under a dozen other games.

All of a sudden you're several years down the track and your gamer friends keep bringing up that damn game. You smile and nod and hope nobody asks you what your favourite part was for which you've already prepared a vague and non-committal, "Oh, you know, it was all so good!" Maybe you're not like me and you fess up when you didn't get around to a game but there's a certain minor amount of shame that comes with being a games journo and not having played huge games. Of course, we can't possibly play everything, we're not superheroes... probably. But when one particular journo claims to love RPGs and everything about RPGs and hasn't played Fallout 3 that's when it becomes a problem.

You're Special

I haven't played Fallout 3. I haven't played any of the Fallout games. My brother and Dad rave about it like it's the best thing to ever hit PCs and consoles but I just never got to it. My brother picked it up to play yesterday and I happened to catch the beginning sequence where you're a baby. Wait, let me emphasize this: YOU'RE A BABY. Like, one year old, crawling, tiny baby.

It was one of the coolest things I've ever seen in a video game so I installed it and spent a good half hour starting and creating my character--I tried to make her look like me and then abandoned that fifteen minutes in when I realised I could give her blue hair. I've barely started but I'm getting into crossing this game (and many, many others) off my lifelong shame list.

So GS peoples, what massively popular or highly-rated games have you never played?

I'm ticked off I missed out on the whole MGS craze years ago, I recently got a hold of the MGS Collection on x360 and was blown away and astounded at how fantastic Metal Gear Solid Peacewalker was ! If you haven't played it I urge you to get a copy of it now !

Missed so many good games :(

Let's see, most of the GTAs, Demon's Souls, Dishonored, Skyward Sword, Resistance,  Icewind Dale (it is pretty much the only CRPG I do not have,) Mass Effect, Guild Wars 2, and Shadow of Colossus. To anyone who has not played Bioshock yet though, that is a must play. (Infinite is a blast technically and intellectually.)

Demon/Dark Souls. It just didn't click with me how it did with most people. After playing Dragon's Dogma (a flawed gem I think), DS is just...not fun.

The main point of playing video games is to HAVE FUN, a good story, good graphics, good mechanics can help, but it ultimately comes down to whether I enjoy playing it or not. Dark Souls was definitely not enjoyable for me, I'm all for punishing games (the new resident evil games are a little toned down in my opi-onion) as long as I have fun.

Oh, I misread the question, I guess I have played Dark Souls if only for about 40 minutes. I have never played GTA San Andreas, any Zelda game other than the original NES game =(

Well I'm glad for you then because you're starting into a classic game and one I still play again from time to time. One of the best games I've played ever. Wait until you meet your first super-mutant! Eek! :D

Bioshock, any given Zelda or Pokemon game, Resistance, Killzone, Final Fantasy, Demon's Souls.

Somehow Dark Souls still has my attention and I am not getting the same vibe from Demon's Souls.

Also haven't played any God of War game or Shadow of the Colossus, so just kill me now

@realguitarhero5 Get the God of War Saga, you will not be disappointed 5 games for 30 or 40 bucks God of War 3 alone is worth that just to experience the awesomeness

I never managed to play all the GTA's, Planescape Torment, Deus Ex, the various Final Fantasies, all the Resident evil series, Dishonored

@Thumbler76 Planescape is completely worth it if you have not yet played it. I enjoyed alot, you just have to be tolerant of old CRPG's. GOG sells it for like 5 dollars now so eh....

Don't worry. I've probably missed 100s of good games.

I even missed Fallout 3 like in your example. I loved Fallout New Vegas though so I'll probably get back to Fallout 3 some day.

Some of the games I've been meaning to play but haven't (mostly for budget reasons and broken hardware).

Skyrim

Mass Effect series

Deus Ex series

Resistance 3

Guild Wars 2

It may look kind of sad when you list them like that but instead of playing those I've found many indie titles that many people overlook. At least with AAA titles I know what I miss and can get back to them later.

Does played but haven't finished count? Sadly for me with RPG's its Final Fantasy 7 and Planescape: Torment

but yeah, not played are WoW, and the later CoD's and Battlefields.

But I think I regret not having every played this other old game called Xenogears

Played and finished Fallout New Vegas before Fallout 3. Great games both of them. but after playing them side by side, it makes you not want to play any kind of game in that universe for a long time after that. And I think it subtly dulled my Skyrim experience. Still though, I maintain large RPGs FTW  :)

Never played WOW, caught all kinds of flak from my friends for that one lol, never played ANY of the Halo or Call of Duty games, and I never played Half Life 1 or 2. There's probably a bunch more there that I should be ashamed of but that's the short list :-P

Pretty much almost all great games that are exclusive to Sony's and MS' home consoles.

Here in Brazil games are too expensive, so I can't possibly afford to have all consoles. Therefore, I always go with Nintendo since they make my favorite games.

So I stick to Nintendo and PC.

@Pierst179 Fair enough =] They're ridiculously overpriced here in Australia, too. I only have my PC, PS3 and a recently deceased N64 which needs replacing.

Funny thing, I actually own both complete editions of Fallout 3 and New Vegas but have yet to play either or any game in the series yet.

I have a huge backlog of games to playthrough!

Hate Fallout 3. Just my opinion. EVERYTHING LOOKED THE SAME. I know, it'sa wasteland, but c'mon. Everything is tan and broken, the game is buggy as heck, and the combat is poorly handled. I just don't like it.

I havnt played Fallout New Vegas and dont really want to but I loved Fallout 3. I havnt played any of the Saints Row games and they are of my favorite genre, after Skyrim DLC and I have Alice Madness returns up next, I'll probably get Saints Row 3 since GTA V was delayed.

I am a Fallout veteran, not only played all Fallout titles but also the German unofficial sequel called "The Fall". I really didn't like Fallout3 all that much, nevertheless I played 130 hours of Fallout3 and I could easily play another 50 hours doing the rest of the sidequests and exploring the wasteland. Yeah you could even get out of the vault as baby! Of course you couldn't survive for long but the idea is just marvelous. I also spend hours creating my character trying to make her look similar to me ( especially in Fallout NV) but ended up looking like a pale redheaded Irish girl:o  my character in Fallout3 though looked different because you play a 19 years old girl/guy in Fallout 3 and of course a teen-ager looks different than a more grownup person. I had a punk hairstyle there and all. It is really strange once I tried to create an older character and noticed it had an impact in how I played the game! I was more careful and conservative!

BTW, I have written a Fallout review( which needs some editing:p ) if you have time and are interested:http://uk.gamespot.com/fallout-3/user-reviews/669803/platform/pc/

There are quite a few famous games I haven't played, WoW or MGS or Final Fantasy to name just a few....Edit (4 minutes)

Literally every Halo since 3 I havent played other than split-screen multiplayer with friends. Other than that I should pick up a Forza game, seeing how I enjoy my racing games quite abit. It's just that I refuse to pay for XBL gold, and alot of the mechanics and modes revolve around the online component of it. One day I hope Turn 10 makes a massively multiplayer racing game on PC or something.

Fallout 3 has a nice opening, a pretty neat atmosphere. But it quickly rears it's ugly head when it comes down to alot of aspects: the awful segregation of some areas that make exploration through sobways a headache, annoying waypoints that dont consider Z axis, some rather monotonous quests, some poor balancing issues that robs the game of its sense of survival. and the overall monotony of the cast.

If you had to play just one new Fallout game, New Vegas is where it's at. Ignore the reviews, it had a rough launch and it got panned for its technicalities, but it should be quite stable now, especially on PC.

@illmatic87 That's interesting to hear what you thought of Fallout, I'm planning to get into New Vegas so I'll let you know how I go!

Nah, Fallout 3 is no good.  I hated it, the drawn out opening sequence, the "deadbeat daddy" storyline, the random, pointless quests, the dull writing and poor characters made for a game that really does not feel like a compelling experience.

What I love that is truly great (and sort of under-rated) is Fallout: New Vegas.  It's a Western, through and through and that just makes it so damn exciting.  The game starts with you taking a bullet to the head, and when you're mysteriously saved you try to hunt down the triggermen (and their leader).  The most minor of quests has an effect on how the world will view you and ultimately helps shape just what you stand for as the player character, and the main storyline has FOUR different storylines with their own quests and characters and it makes for one of the most daring and impressive open world games ever made.  The game uses the same mechanics as Fallout 3, but proves that RPGs need more than mechanics but also great writing, interesting/unique characters, and a world that holds many surprises (the difference between the wasteland areas and New Vegas areas is strikingly different and when you catch a glimpse of those lights while wandering, well, it's a sight!

I hate Fallout 3, it's similar to every other Bethesda game, as big as an ocean and as deep as a puddle.  But New Vegas has true nuance and depth and stands, in my eyes, as one of the greatest modern role-playing games.

@NeonNinja this just goes to show that what makes a good game is objective - some people love Fallout 3 and others don't

iowastate
iowastate ranger

@NeonNinja or is it subjective?  I get the two confused

timdogg42069
timdogg42069

@tempertress @NeonNinja @iowastate Kingdoms of Amalur kind of pissed me off like that, I love the combat in it but I have so many quests right now it's not even funny so I started playing Far Cry 3 and absolutely love it.

tempertress
tempertress moderator moderatorstaff

@NeonNinja @iowastate I'll definitely check out New Vegas, I haven't played lots of those games either. There's always a big disparity on what's good or bad. I love your Bethesda metaphor, that often rings true. I love those games but they're horrible at story-telling, it's hard to follow when you have 101 quests.

NeonNinja
NeonNinja

@iowastate

I think you meant subjective.  Though I agree with the first post, New Vegas is objectively better in every way than every Bethesda game made. XD

To answer your question of other popular/highly-rated games I've never played though:

Dark Souls- I own it, but haven't played it yet

Grand Theft Auto series- I have not played a single one for more than 10 minutes maybe

Borderlands 2- I have it, haven't played it

Metal Gear Solid 3 and 4- I stopped at 2

Dragon Quest series- I love RPGs, but never got around to this

Xenoblade Chronicles /The Last Story- They look awesome, I should get them.

2D Legend of Zelda games- I have only ever played the 3D console Zelda releases.

Final Fantasy VII- I'm actually early into it, but I'm holding off at the moment to finish my second playthrough of FFIV.

I am the opposite, I actually haven't played any of the Elder Scrolls games.

I played Fallout 3 after everyone on the GS AU board was saying it was their GOTY and after I played it, I can see why.

I'm not really into RPGs but just like you said many my friends regularly talk about the Mass Effect games and the Fallout games which I have never played, until now.

When Mass Effect 3 came out I felt really left out, everyone talking about about how great the games were and I hadn't played them :( So I went out and bought all 3 of the Mass Effect games as we speak. I'm about half way through Mass Effect 2 at the moment and living it.

As for the Fallout series, I also haven't played any of them before. I bought Fallout 3 when it came out on one and still have played it, but it is on my list of games I want to play. But with new games starting to come out this year i'm afraid it might keep getting push back before I get around to it.

@Sidburn19 I had that Mass Effect syndrome too, I as very late off the mark and only recently caught up -I enjoyed it immensely though.
