I did not put any effort on the Tactical Challenges, only tried four times on Challenge 1 before giving up, knowing I was not good at anything where you have to survive all the waves without dying. Plus, starting from square one annoyed me. But, if something is given my best efforts, most of the time, it produces positive results.

It's pretty brutal. Probably the hardest challenge I've ever overcome. Don't get the wrong idea, it's definitely possible. With a lot of time, a lot of practice, and reviewing all the tips on this site (it's where I got my strategies), it will still be hard as hell, but doable.

In my experience? You'll think you have the game down for the first three challenges... then challenge 4 will make you rethink that. Challenge 5 will make you feel back on top again.

Challenge six will make you cry.

But damn does it feel good when you get it.

It really depends. Vanquish isn't a game kind the weak. Unlike most games in your platinum collection where you just need to play a lot to get it eventually, Vanquish is unobtainable for a good deal of people. You really need a certain gaming mindset and dedication.

What helps a lot of people is to play the challenges a few times, remember what they're having trouble with and look up on a ton of Youtube video's. There's a good deal of them out there. Find tactics and use them to your advantage. And never give up. Challenge 1 is a hurdle to get over, once you beat it challenge 2 and 3 will follow shortly.
As mentioned, Challenge 4 is insane at times, which is most of the time. It's hard as nails and it shows no mercy. Challenge 5 is a breather and Challenge 6 is simply the hardest. Peroid.

I say, go for it. It's a crowning achievement and to this day in my opinion the hardest skill-based Platinum (and yes, I am counting NGS2. NGS2 is hard due to connection and inability to solo). Go for it!

    1) Any options I should tweak?

    2) Where should I practice this infinite boost trick?

    3) Any other moves should I practice?
  • May 5, 2012 9:11 am GMT
    1) voices: english. As there are a ton of vocal cues that are hard to pick up in other languages. The rest is up to you.

    2) by playing. I practiced it in Challenge 4, where I really had to speed up my game. I was simply getting destroyed there, so it required me to learn it.

    3) EMP-sliding, Firecanceling and ReloadCanceling are great tools. As are others.
    Taken from my guide:

    EMPSLIDE:
"As I said, most of the time when you’ll be using the EMP it would be nice if it were to go off fast. You’re be in danger, you need to escape. But he throws so slow.
Luckily, there’s a quick way around this that enables you to use an EMP and still say on the move. Start a boost and while sliding along the lanes pop an EMP grenade. The grenade will fall to the ground and explode nearly instantly while you can continue boosting or execute a followup strategy. "

    Boostdodging:
"Boost dodging is a combination of, as the name implies, boosting and dodging. The idea behind it is that the startup of the boost gives you invincibility frames. And that the dodge also gives you invincibility frames. Put those two together and you’ve got a rolling machine blessed by the gods. (32)
It takes some getting used to executing, and the animation doesn’t change much, but there’s an easy way to recognise an Boostdodge from a regular dodge. The sound. A normal dodge makes one heavy sound. Whereas a boostdodge makes two sounds, one being the startup of the boost and the second one being the heavy sound of the dodge. (33)

Boostdodging is the most important technique to master in Vanquish because it offers a ton of options and has a great amount of perks attached to it. For starters boostdodging is faster then running, making it an idea form of transportation. Then it gives almost twice the amount of invincibility as a regular dodge does and it doesn’t take away the ability to regenerate your ARS juice.
Boostdodging makes the regular dodge literally useless, it is superior in every way. "

    ReloadCancel:
"Don’t you just love and hate your shotgun? It does so much damage against bosses, but man it reloads so slow! No fear, reload cancelling is here! (35)
A simple concept. You just emptied your shotgun, you press reload and then quickly switch to another weapon. Even though you didn’t let the animation finish completely, the shotgun is now fully reloaded. (36)
Abusing this fault in the game’s reloading system allows you to keep the pressure on at all times by decreasing downtime. Though this can be a bit of a hassle, especially during a busy fire fights, it can make a huge difference. Try and slide your thumb over the d-pad really quick, it may takes some getting used to as with most techniques but it’s not too hard. "

    FIRECANCEL:
Among the last of the advanced techniques, fire cancelling is one you will want to remember. The premise is simple, you hold down the fire button and proceed to spray your enemy with bullets. Then, while holding down the fire button, you switch to another weapon. Doing this just before you have to reload is a great way to use this ability as allows you to keep the pressure up. (38)
The most popular usage of this ability is by firing a Heavy Machine gun until it is nearly empty to then fire cancel into a shotgun blast for that last bit of damage. (39)
Not all weapons allow for fire cancelling to other weapons, or some only allows fire cancelling to specific weapons.

Wow, thanks for those tips, bro. I will start the survival tasks today or tomorrow.

Would you post some videos too that you would recommend for Challenge 1, looking for something most can do, not the best time or runs that are hard to pull off.
  • May 5, 2012 12:22 pm GMT
For challenge1, this video will probably help you a ton.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSlrg-TtfNc&feature=related

It shows a lot of spawning points and how to deal with them. Challenge 1 likes to throw a ton of enemies at you to force you to learn how Challenges work in this game. You kill them, before they even spawn.

this video is a bit more...casual.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OjSloS2v5c8

Good luck. Once you beat Challenge 1 you should get into the mood and style of the game more. Allowing you to beat 2 3 and 5 pretty quickly. Do note though, Challenge1 is widly regarded as the easiest. Just so you know what's ahead.

    Thanks for the links, Raeng.

I have to relearn the buttons and the game again, October 2010 was the last time I played Vanquish. I will post here once I beat Tactical Challenge 1.

I suggest you play Hard first, maybe you'll pick it up again that way. Most challenges are set to hard difficulty anyways.

^ I agree with that. Hard was easy as hell compared to some of those challenges... yikes.

I definitely agree with the above, I stopped playing Vanquish for a few months when Yakuza 4 came out and when I came back to it I was awful at it. I played through the campaign again on Very Hard and by the end I had gotten back into it. I think its one of those games you need to play regularly to stay good, or good enough for the challenges at least.

I used a lot of tips off this board (most were probably from Raeng tbh, lol) and used YouTube videos to learn each wave to help memorise what comes and from where. I used a mix of the amazing Youtube vids (by MoluJPN, also now there are even better times by players like vnichiro) and some standard players who were getting times 10 or 15 minutes worse just so I could see how they all do it and try to apply their strategies to the way I played it (because as easy as players like vnichiro and MoluJPN make it look, trying to imitate their strategies is impossible for average players).

MoluJPN's challenge 6 is a good example of all those skills Raeng explained:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SWGfXaXlzoI
    0:35 fire cancelling
1:00 & 1:43 an old TPS trick, ignore the cover mechanic and stand behind cover, place character so he's standing behind cover but your reticle is outside of it, many TPS games just have bullets land on where the ai is instead of giving them a path to travel through, so sometimes you may be in a position to exploit this and fire from relative safety
    2:03 reload cancels the shotgun
    2:29 boost dodging
    4:05 & 4:13 EMP slide

But remember MoluJPN is a cyborg and he has cyber augmented reflexes.

Wait @Raeng! What is this Infinite boost trick?

Don't know what I was thinking when typing that lol

Does anyone know what is this infinite boost trick that was mentioned?
  • May 8, 2012 8:46 pm GMT
It's a bit early for me, so I'm not fully awake. But I don't remember mentioning any Infinite Boost trick. I think you're confusing it with Boost-dodging.

@Cassy, thanks for the mention ;p

Well, AlphaOmegakid asked in his post about practicing the infinite boost trick. It should be around the fourth post. Just what exactly did AlphaOmegakid mean by infinite boost trick?
  • May 8, 2012 11:05 pm GMT
I'm pretty sure it was his words for the Boostdodge. He was still learning about the ins and outs of the game. And technically it's an infinite boost, you just don't boost a lot while doing it ;p

Harder than ngs2? Now we're talking.

But still, I bet you UT spammed through master ninja and spun ultimate.

I'm holding off on playing this again until I get my new tv

Actually quite the opposite. I killed the Genshins while my partner (a Ryu) walked one in UN2. I admit I twirled my first attempt for UN1, but completed it many times afterwards.

UT spam is how you play NGS2, but I've also done no-UT runs and weapon specific runs. I was pretty deep into it, really fun stuff ;p I don't consider Master Ninja challenging anyway, your just have to play a bit more carefull then normally.
But Vanquish is simply harder in my opinion for the sole reason that it's just you. You can't give the responsibility to someone else while you just Twirl or Glitch.

Hey, fellow gamers. I finally got a chance to play Vanquish today. There is no way I will replay the story again, ran through the Tutorial feature instead for a refresher course. The most times I played through a game is 3 times when needed, any more than that, I get bored with the game and stop playing it.

I beat Tactical Challenge 1 in about 12 tries, was not pretty though, took me a little over 18 minutes. Which is easier to tackle next, Challenge 2 or 3?
