Get acquainted with the new units in the upcoming expansion for Relic's explosive strategy game. First up: the Space Marine Grey Knights.
Studios like Relic Entertainment are helping refine and evolve real-time strategy as we know it. Whereas these games used to be about the simple steps of collecting resources, building a base and an army, and crushing your opponents, these strategy games have at once started to enjoy more gameplay depth, as well as more-exciting, fast-paced gameplay. Relic's 2004 strategy game Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War is a perfect example of the kind of fast-moving, explosive experience that real-time strategy games can deliver, and later this year, the developer will release a second expansion pack for Dawn of War, Dark Crusade. We're pleased to bring you the new units that will appear in the game, starting with the Space Marines' new unit, the Grey Knights.
The Grey Knights are an extremely powerful and secretive chapter within the ranks of the elite soldiers known as Space Marines. The chapter was apparently founded to specifically hunt and battle daemons, the otherworldly monsters that plague the Emperor's domain. In fact, rumor has it that these exceptionally powerful soldiers were created from the Emperor's own genetic stock.
In battle, the Grey Knights are the most powerful of all Space Marines and possess special psyker abilities that make them even more dangerous adversaries. However, these supersoldiers are extremely rare; working with them is considered to be a unique privilege.
The Grey Knights are even tougher than the average Space Marine and are decent ranged attackers, although they carry special "force halberd" melee weapons that make them much more effective in melee combat. Grey Knights are, of course, particularly effective against daemon opponents. Unfortunately, because these powerful warriors are so rare, in the game you'll be able to create only a single squad of them. As mentioned, Grey Knights also possess psyker abilities.
This ability damages all enemies in a wide area around the Grey Knights with psychic "torture." The residual psychic energy actually "haunts" the area and seeks out any nearby targets.
This ability lets Grey Knights advance on their enemies with incredible speed, and the extra momentum is translated into a powerful attack.
That's all for the Space Marines' Grey Knights unit. Stay tuned to GameSpot for more updates on Dark Crusade's new units.
Ah, our demon problem is solved, 10 grey knights with a pysker justicar (the sergent in cause you dont play 40k) armed with a force sword. I have a new speartip now hehe. All we need is a kill team for the aliens
Oh, God these are very powerful and amazing units. It's gona be very nice to fight with them in the battles.
I wasn't sure about this game, but after seeing all these videos, it's getting close to my must-have list.
yes at last the ones weve all been waiting for all we need now is for the eldar to get tyranids and the would be excellent
great idea, Grey Knight Terminators. Why don't we just give space-marine players a 10 minute countdown to a instant win button? cause u know, 5 minuets is the time it takes to get grey knight termies.
Finally, even more races to play with :P The Grey Knights are cool :) I Can't wait for this expansion
Grey Knights are good, Grey Knight Terminators would have been better. I suppose that would have been too powerful a unit and thrown the entire balance of forces into disarray. Anyhow, good on ya Relic for this new unit!!
Anyone notice that occasionally they seem to get a speed boost and zoom to their enemy in close combat? I refer to situations in the video such as when they're fighting Orks, and cultists after the Orks and Chaos space marines.
Graphics look very appeling, I have been checking up on alot of PC games similar to this and I am looking forward to it
"A member of the DoW forums ar RelicNews, Tranj, made an arbitrary thread in a DoW forum about Company of Heroes' game engine that's lead to a lot of speculation that the CoH engine will be used for a second Dawn of War game. So, Nids might make it into the series after all." Relic were always going to put nids in the next DoW game[if one was to be made]. Its also a given they would likely use their inhouse essense engine used for company of heros to achieve this. The Grey Knights had the players insignia because people want customisation. they dont want a rigid unit of grey knights that are always grey with white tabards and the mark of the inquisition. new units are confirmed to be: SM:Grey Knights CSM: Daemon Prince(upgrade for CL according to ToT)right) Eldar: Harliquins IG: Heavy Weapons teams(originally meant to be in WA, but removed due to time constrants) Orks:Flash Gitz(shootas with 'better' guns). Information about balance is still coming through. it has been stated by Tranj that no balance is to be taken from these movies which are specifically made to show-off the new units.
Darcius, Relic basically stated that the DoW engine "Wouldn't do the Tyranids justice". In other words, they felt the engine could not render them well enough to portray them in the manner they are ment to. But that might be a trend that will change. A member of the DoW forums ar RelicNews, Tranj, made an arbitrary thread in a DoW forum about Company of Heroes' game engine that's lead to a lot of speculation that the CoH engine will be used for a second Dawn of War game. So, Nids might make it into the series after all.
the greyknights as a whole arent that over powered on the TT they are basicly an extreamly expencive force com and lib in one. so 1 squad in the game shouldnt over power it. i mean i can take 4 full squad of gaurd and kill whole marine army off. so GK shouldnt overly balance it too much. though i wouldnt mind seeing nids ingame i think the main reason it wouldnt work is nids are listed as a spaztic army. they scurry around like bugs so they would have alot of idle animation and unlike living armys who use buildings nids dont really use buildings. they deep strike then set up their nid chimeys which i believe pop out rippers so how would nids make use of the natural def areas of the maps and gain res when all they do is swarm and consume unlike the others who would need buildings and res i think thats partly why nids are not ingame right now oh and greyknights are not like normal marines most are trained phykers where as most chapters have very few libs GK are all phsykers as for the emperor seed i forget the white dwarf fluff on them.. but it would make sence. oh and the other chapters of the first founding used the selected gene seed of their chapter primarchs. kind of like taking seed from the emperors generals and so forth. they are his "chosen" men
From what I heard, the Eldar are getting Harliquins as a Tier 2 command squad unit. Along with being devestating in close combat with the Death Dance ability, they also have the infamous Harilquin Kiss weapon, which is a near instant kill against an individual unit, be it a squad sergant or commander. As for the other races, I heard that Chaos is getitng the Daemon Prince for T3, Imperial Guard has Heavy Weapon Teams for T2 with a T3 upgrade for increased firepower and the Orks have Flash Gitzs, Orks with flashy and very shooty guns.
Relic already said that they will never made Tyranids for DOW, citing the engine as the reason. It is more likely that they are reserving 'Nids for DOW2, and seeing how the Essence engine for their Company of Heroes look, I have no doubt that DOW2 will set new standard for RTS when it is released. As for Grey Knights, I think it is an excellent unit for SM because while you can only get 1 squad out at any time, it provides a CC unit that SM lacks, a great infantry at tier 2 that the SM doesn't have and before the terminators are available, and they have two great abilities to boot. The only problem is that other races' new units do not seem as good as GK, and SM is good enough as it is. At any rates, I've very excited for DC and I would like to get it ASAP.
Tyranids would be ace! My favourite 40k army. Yet it would have to be some sort of bonus mode as they are totally different to all the other armies, and it would be daft if they started capturing objectives. .... Though saying that I suppose their resources could be harvesting enemy units... which could be fun
Now my dear IG soilders will get even more ridiculous punishments, damn those brethren! Where's my assassin?! Send those damn knights to the warp before they reach my poor Kasrkin squad!
I don't like the TT Necrons but CAN'T wait to play as them first in the expansion. Which on will you guys play as first?? Necrons or Tau?
dude i want to see if any one other unit can kill that grey knight squad! .....even if the dogma's off just a little. by the way if they ever do make tyranids in dow they are going to either really overpowering or way to weak i dont think you can make them even with the other races in their natural state they are to strong!!! i still love marines way to much so i love that we get new killy toys to try out on the other saps!
if u go to wikipedia for dark crusade that said that the Imperial Guards are getting heavy weapons team, the Chaos are getting deamon prince, the eldar are getting harquins(i spelled this wrong) and the orks well i forgot. just go to wikipedia.
A limitation of the game engine most likely is why they have the wrong insignia. I mean, the player was probably playing Blood Raven's when that screen shot was taken.
i just realized.. if they added the grey knights as a new playable race...everyone else would be screwed..
wohoooo! grey knights ftw! the uncorruptable demon hunters of t3h imperium!! their mere presence weakens and lowers the skillz of their enemies... but i thought they were a whole different chapter by themselves? this don't sound right...
Some guys are crying about Tyranids and that me thinking thinking Who are this Tyranids (to bored and lazy to read Wikipedia) ?
uh they got something wrong, said "it's rumered grey knights are made from the Emperor's genetics" all space marines are
"why arent thr tyranids ever going to be in DOW." Relic has stated, TIME AND TIME AGAIN, that the DoW engine does simply not do the tyranids justice. this reason ALONE means they will never be part of the game. Hope for a dawn of war 2. You can bet they will be in that ;) Looks like a new commander retinue.
can't wait for this expansion, hope they'll improve dow's online mode, i.e. sending maps to players that do not have certain maps on their pcs, cuz it really sucks in dow and wa that you can only play together when you have the same maps :(
Grey Knights- Space Marines; Heavy Weapon Platforms- Imperial Guard; Demon Prince- Chaos; Flash Gitz- Orks; Harlequins- Eldar. Basically great new units inbound for Dark Crusade
