Why won't the health packs work?!?!?

When I pick up a health pack, NOTHING HAPPENS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm getting extremely ticked off. At one point, I only had 10 health left, and I picked up two health packs, neither of which did anything. I CANNOT beat this game unless I can figure out why health packs arent working!!!!!!!

You actually have to select them while cycling through your inventory with X or Y to use them.
Or press up on the D-pad.
